The Cave at Lascaux Challenge!
Where: Dordogne department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France
What: Complex of caves famous for its paleolithic cave paintings
Interesting facts:
The entrance to the cave was discovered on September 12, 1940 by 18-year-old Marcel Ravidat.
The paintings are estimated to be circa 17300 years old. They consist of nearly 2000 figures, which can be grouped into three main categories: animals, human figures, and abstract signs. Three graphic techniques were used: painting, drawing and engraving, some paintings combine two or all three.
Research has established that each animal species pictorialized at Lascaux represents a specific period of the calendar, according to their mating habits. Lascaux's artists were extremely adept at capturing the vitality of the animals depicted, by using broad, rhythmic outlines around areas of soft colouring.
The cave complex was opened to the public in 1948, but closed in 1963 due to damage to the paintings caused by carbon dioxide, heat, humidity, light and other contaminants produced by visitors. After the cave was closed, the paintings were restored. However for the last few years there's a serious fungus and mold problem that causes dark patches and damages to the pigments. Now only a few scientific experts are allowed to work inside the cave and just for a few days.
In 1983 a replica of the cave was opened, called Lascaux II. It's located 200 meters away from the original cave.
If you like to solve puzzles and you're interested in getting your own cave, help me with the Reconstruction.
GOOD LUCK on the challenge! Create for us some breath-taking masterpieces of the Cave at Lascaux for some awesome GA wins!
