Will Humble Bundle get your money today?

View Results
Yes! Tier 1 looks useful to me! :)
Yus! BTA has a steam key and other interesting software!
Oh yeah! Give me that tier 3!
I don't know.. (⊙︿⊙)
Where are the steam keys?! ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)
Nope! Not today HB!

I love software bundles, but I have no interest in the stuff on offer. It looks much more like a trialware bundle for things that have better open source alternatives.

Imagine though if HB did an Adobe bundle or other photo/image editing software or 3D modeling and animation w/ tutorials or 1-year subsciptions to education sites like Lynda or Treehouse... that would be pretty awesome.

DisplayFusion isn't that much more stable…

hmm the only one that sounds useful to me is DisplayFusion but isn't windows10 meant to have better mutiscreen control anyway?

I use it in W10 mostly for the wallpaper management. Way better than what Windows gives you.

Better than previous Windows versions, but nowhere close to what DisplayFusion can do.

My subscription of vpnghost just ran out. Had to buy it anyway. It's cheaper with this bundle. So its a BTA purchase for me.

still can't decide if it is worth BTA for CyberGhost vpn, that is one year subscription for monthly price.

Lowest BTA I've seen for this was $5.88 btw, but I don't have a screenshot to prove it, so you'll just have to take my word for it (or not) ^_^

Anyone know if Cyberghost VPN is good or not? Is the subscription for the premium or premium plus?

I also noticed they offer free VPN. Vpnranks.com says it's unlimited bandwidth, 256 bit encryption and OpenVPN protocol and has access to around 38 free servers in 15 countries although on Cyberghost's site it lists 244 free servers. Anyone have experience with the free VPN and is it good enough if you only need to watch occasional videos and torrenting?

Since the difference between those is being able to simultaneously use up to 5 devices, I would say it's the Premium subscription, not the Premium Plus. Someone else might be able to confirm that, but it seems logical not to allow 5 devices on a bundled license at a cheap price (they'd rather see you buying 5 bundles :P).

One question I think nobody has asked... Does Cyberghost work with Netflix?? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I'm almost sure the answer is "no" but, hey, at least I wanted to ask. I've been looking up for a method to be able to bypass the geo restriction on Netflix (I'd rather watch the US catalog since I watch everything with subtitles) but they made it impossible.

From their site.

I went ahead and bought the BTA bundle. Still a great deal for a one year VPN sub and most reviews say it's pretty good so why not.

Hey thanks!! I didn't notice that page on their site. I hope it's up to date, since it's an ongoing war between Netflix and VPN/hosting services. I'll definitely check it!

If you search for CyberGhost and Netflix the reviews are saying it doesn't support Netflix so I'd probably trust what everyone else is saying. Sounds like the Cyberghost site is just saying it may or may not work we can't be sure, which isn't very reassuring.

So, so far:

  • Programs from the $1 tier are "Meh". There are better paid Text Expanders out there, and even pretty good free ones. Fences + DeskScapes look just like crapware which will end only slowing your computer. And Directory Opus 12 is ugly, it's the light version (not Pro) and, again, there are better free options out there.
  • Lastpass subscription won't work on already existing accounts. I expected it not to work on accounts that were premium at least once in the past, but it seems you have to register a new account. Not worth the effort.
  • Just checked and CyberGhost VPN doesn't have servers in *ahem*Brazil*ahem* ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) They don't have a browser plugin either, which is usually a good addition to VPN services (sometimes I don't want the whole OS traffic to be routed through the VPN and I just need to mask the traffic from the internet browser).
  • Tier 3 is OK. However, the Macrium Reflect Free Edition is enough if you only need to make images (snapshots) of your computers (works fairly well and even better than Acronis in some environments I stumbled upon). Bitdefender might be good, I don't know, I haven't used it. I believe antivirus software is not required if you use your brain, but that's another story. There's a lot of different opinions on Antivirus brands too (I like ESET Nod32 and Kapersky myself, and I hate McAfee and Panda) so...

DisplayFusion seems to be the best tool included in the bundle, and it's on Steam too.

Tier 3 is good if people are looking for value (discounted by 1st BTA tier).

Bitdefender would be my preferred choice, were it not subscription-based. As of now, Defender + MBAM for me.

Tier 2 is of course questionable for existing users. xD

Oh, I forgot! When I saw this bundle I asked myself "When did HB become Stacksocial?".

Regarding subscriptions... I bought quite a few software bundles in the past (usually because there were great deals for OS X software) but I stopped when I started to notice the pattern: a dev usually would bundle his software a couple of months before launching "a major update", which required a paid license upgrade. The "minor" updates for a program (4.5 -> 4.6) are usually free, while things go different when it's a "major" (4.x -> 5.0). Of course, the upgrade when you already have a license for the previous version is (almost always) cheaper but it still felt like some sort of scam.

So, buying a program can be also seen as some sort of "subscription" :D

It seems only Lastpass is available for Linux (not surprising since it0s available as a browser extension)... Not even Cyberghost VPN, that was really surprising (maybe it's possible to manually configure Linux to use that VPN but it's definitely not advertised as available for Linux on their site (ಠ_ಠ)

Aren't many of DisplayFusion's functions natively available on OS X and on some Linux frontends anyway?

After checking thoroughly, I think I can conclude tier 1 is pretty nice value. I'd get it, just to test out the Text program.

Breevy has a good reputation, so $1 for it (and other tools you might never use) is a great deal.

Damn, I'm tempted to get the first tier just for Fences, I've been after that thing for years but never thought it was worth its original price. I finally settled for an alternative way of keeping a clean desktop though, so I'm not sure if I should buy it now.

[Edit] Welp, I got it thanks to Surfpup's key drop thread. :D

Errrrr.... Dropping Steam keys around works because once it's used, you can't redeem it again... But what happens if a lot of people use your license key and the software does online checks for it? Wouldn't it be revoked as soon as they notice that hundreds of people are using the same license?

This bundle is going to be a goldmine to serial sites and w4r3z groupz (KCNScrew and SerialSeeker, for example).

Unless they were stupid enough to just send one mass-license key like some software creators did when they made small email promotions.

I'm pretty sure they would use one-time license keys for a bundle.

But used by 99% of the interesting people you would want to hack if you're serious (enterprises, banks, embedded systems -routers!-).

I think you misunderstood me, I meant critical systems tend to use Linux (or Unix) and those are tempting for real hackers. Using a Unix based OS to hack is just because you've got a lot more freedom to do things than on desktop operating systems like Windows or OSX.

I would like to have authentic versions of Acronis, LastPass Premium and CyberGhost, but at least the first two applications, I would like to have them for lifetime. Otherwise, thanks to the free alternatives for home usage.

anyone knows about an acronis alternative that can exclude full directories from an image backup? and that lets you explore and extract files from the it as well

Permalink

Paid or free? For paid I've used Macrium Reflect and it's quite good. It saved me in a couple of cases where Acronis couldn't deal with the partition table when cloning a hard disk (it was on a laptop, with those hidden manufacturer's partitions). When I just needed to clone or image, the free version of Macrium Reflect was enough (I think managing directories is a paid feature, though).

My issue is that since I moved I can't watch geo blocked content in Belgium anymore.
I might get this for Cyberghost.
Will Cyberghost enable to watch geo-blocked content from Belgium specifically and/or is there another alternative that I can use.
Cheers for replies.

Wait what you mean like content from Sporza that isn't available in other countries or stuff like the facebook page of the walking dead that uploads videos that aren't available in Belgium?
Either way the answer is yes.

It's 50€/year on their website or 5€/month (for the premium account), I've already paid 15€ for a year but it was with a nice discount.

I used Fences a long time ago. (The first version was freeware I think?) not even for the Win 3.1-like fences, but because of the nifty thing where double clicking on your desktop hides icons except for those you choose, so I could look like a tidy person to a random passerby, when just two clicks would reveal the true extent of my organizational depravity.

Full price of Fences and DeskScapes is $9.99 each.

Bought for Fences. I used the old free version (it's still installed on my HTPC) and liked it, so don't mind throwing a little money Stardock's way for a Windows 10 compatible one. I might also try Directory Opus.
