What games can you recommend that don't require a graphics card? Mine was quite old, a week ago it just broke. While I wait for the paycheck I'd love to play some games. Unfortunately games like Hotline Miami or even the pityful Minecraft won't run without one. Do you know any, and if so, can you recommend them? Thanks!

or try the ps1 or N64 emulators there are great games and with the integrated graphics of the mother/processor is enough, i played without dedicated graphics for years man, i know the suffering but i played a lot of good games, you can try morrowind also, i also played minecraft for 2 years in a netbook without dedicated graphics, minecraft its CPU dependent, not GPU, i played that game by increasing the voltage of the front-side-bus with a software called SetFSB, its a risky program if you use it indiscriminately, but i was desesperated and it works very well, i get up to 30 fps with my shitty intel atom in minecraft...

Not certain on the PS1 emulator, but years ago I remember Dolphin64 was an absolute graphics hog (believe it or not)!
Hit up some older titles on GoG. I know I used to run the X-Wing games on a 386 and a 486 (systems twice as old as many of you). I also used to run Alpha Centauri off of an integrated card.

Edit: As an aside; Minecraft, though lax in graphic artistry is an enormous strain on much of a system due to its vastness of environment. It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing game, but its demands on your GPU are rather taxing.

Download this, I played it when my old graphic card gave up the ghost.

The question naturally is what are your integrated graphics. This is based on the CPU you have, and will affect what games you're able to play. If you're not able to play Minecraft, it may be that you don't have the right driver installed, and have fallen back on the generic driver that comes with the OS.

^ this.

The new Intel 5000 series cards are actually pretty capable. I can run Grid 2 on medium and Fifa 14 on Ultra on my Macbook Air. It's not a gaming machine but it's ultra portable gaming at its finest. :)

4000 series should be good enough for playing games on low settings too

I played Portal on a Intel Core 2 (single processor), Ultra Low Voltage, 1.4GHz. The graphics processor is the Intel GMA 4500M.

The settings were on medium and I only got fps drop on the final battle.

1920x1080 no AA for Grid 2 @ medium. That's what gigabyte showed off at CES last year on the Intel integrated 5000.

What are you going to use for output, your printer?
Text adventure I guess then.

You know that the GPU's monitor ports arent the only way to connect a monitor to a pc, right?! Not few but many MoBo's have D-Sub/DVI output or HDMI if newer.

He said no GPU. You are talking about plugging things in to a GPU.

I'd say it's even mostly not possible. Any display, even a text based terminal, requires a graphics card (servers have some low end graphics for this purpose). If you don't have any graphics at all, then what would you use? Punch cards? Beeps? I seem to recall a game that used only sound to play to simulate a blind/total darkness environment, but I forgot the name. Anyway you'd need graphics to more or less boot an OS to run it.

Look into games that allow you to use software rendering (where the CPU does the work and no GPU is required). I believe Sim City 4 has this option and is a fantastic game you could sink many hours into. I'm not sure how powerful the CPU actually has to be though.

I had times with a quite low integrated card so here are some of the older games I played:
Neighbours from hell, Freedom fighters, Outlaw golf, Sims 1, Half-Life and lots of mods, Counter-Strike, Syberia, Blood Omen 1 and 2, Soul Reaver 2, Dead to rights, Rise of Nations, Heretic 2, Quake 2 and 3, Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and 4, Screamer 4x4, Dungeon Siege, Age of empires 2, JAmes Bond Nightfire, Hitman 2 and Contracts, Pro evolution soccer 4 or 5
You can play PS1,N64,NES,SNES games too on emulators.
Check this video, has a lot of old games and I'm sure they will run just fine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZp2_k0mIKs

My graphic card died about a month ago and I was a few days with the integrated one. I was playing only Resonance (other Wadjet Eye games should be fine too) and Papers, Please... though the latter one was lagging a bit.

I'm in the same situation as you at the moment. All I have is a integrated graphics card that is terrible.
I can recommend using onlive. You can stream games at high graphics settings without needing a good graphics card. The only limitation to this is you need to have fast internet or else you will get a very bad connection and the game won't be very playable.

I did play a whole lot without my card so i would recommend some games like starcraft, half life 1 and lots of mods, some indies like Dungeon Chaos, Jables adventure and Annihilation a geometry wars clone (look for those 3 on pixel prospector there you could find lots of indie free games with are pretty fun), torchlight, soldat, the suffering, dead pixel and ftl (if you are into casual peggle, insaniquarium and basicaly whole pop cap library of games should do it) besides all the rpg maker based games and gba/ps1 emulator ones ( you should give a look at wackymodder84 low spec pc games series and pixel prospector 235 free indie games compilation with i would say 60-70% works fine on integrated cards)

Binding of Isaac (not rebirth)
Defender's Quest.
Avernum games.
Dungeons of Dredmor.

You could also try games that run through a browser, shame you just missed the humble bundle for them. Faster Than Light might work too, but I dont know for sure.

First you need to know what DirectX version your card support, a game may look crapy but if it need DX9 and your gpu dont support it the crappy game dont run. Same happen to me, my gpu burn and now im using an very old laptop, and the video card dont is not compatible with DX9.
POSTAL
RUNE
VICTIM OF XEN
NOSFERATUM
HAMMERWATCH (it use OPENGL)

The really important thing is the compatibility between your video card and the diferent version of DirectX.

Playing without any graphics card is impossible, since computer won't be able to display any image.

But I'll just assume that you have integrated graphics card. And now here is where you need to give one more information. What integrated card do you have? I've run Resident Evil 5 on X4500 (low detail - 40-50fps). Borderlands 1, Typing of the Dead: Overkill and Poker Night 2 on HD 3000 (High detail - 60 fps), Civilization V and XCOM: Enemy Unknown on both of them. (payable on low/medium detail) The walking dead on GMA 3150 (about 15-20 fps on low detail)

Or just play Might and Magic: Duel of Champions, Final Fantasy VII or Game Dev Tycoon. If nothing else works just try Crysis 3. It might work.
