some of those ratings make no sense! Pirates Gold - 58%? Street Fighter 30th Anniversary - 66%? And don't even ask about poor Qbert. It's like, Steam as no appreciation for the classics. and yet, Bard's Tale Trilogy has 95%. Even when those games first came out, they were never 95%

The low ratings make perfect sense if you read the negative reviews. It's not that the games are bad, it's that they created a lazy PC port and the games have issues that the original games didn't have. People want to buy the game they played a long time ago and play it on a modern computer, but the companies just want to make a quick buck and not spend any time creating a proper port.
Also, the high ratings are probably high because most of the people purchasing the game are people that have played any enjoyed the game in the past and are playing it for nostalgia. When it was first released, a broad range of gamers bought it, some like it and some didn't, so the review score reflected that. Now it is mostly just people that already know they like the game that are buying and giving positive reviews. If a more general audience bought and reviewed the game now, say 100,000 people, I'm sure the score would drop.

I try to add only games I intend to play to my collection, so most are above 80%.

According to SteamDB, I have 150 games ranging from 90% positive ratings to 97%, and quite a few of those I already played and enjoyed a bunch (and surprisingly enough, one of the most well rated games I have Helltaker is also one of the games I enjoyed the least from the ones completed last year).

Inspired by this thread, I did a tally.
I have games rated:
98% - 3
97% - 16
96% - 30
95% - 29
94% - 37
93% - 32
92% - 39
91% - 46
90% - 38
That's 270 games rated 90% or better. Now my backlog feels so much more depressing
80%-89%: 285 "very positive":
70%-79%: 136 "mostly positive"
51%-69%: 074 "mixed"
50% or less: 19 games, 4 of which are utter junk
not including acknowledged junk that I've permanently hidden the day I acquired it; you know, free garbage
