I have an old physical copy of a game - it hasn't been registered on Steam or anywhere else. There's a cdkey inside it... but I would like to make sure it's possible to activate it on Steam (it is available on Steam so I presume its cdkey can be activated too). Is there a way I could verify that? I don't like the game, I don't play it and I don't plan to sell it, so I'd like to gift it... but I wouldn't want to create a failed gift!
Thanks in advance :)

You can. Contact support and ask them if CDKey is used or can be used.

Thanks for the quick responses :) The game is Alpha Prime, which I noticed it started showing up here recently.

Hmm, I have a Polish version of the game and there is a cdkey printed on a piece of paper. I can't even remember if the game asks for it during installation. It's in the format that's shown on https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

If I create a giveaway with this key and it turns out it fails to activate... will I get in trouble on steamgifts?

Oh, I see, I thought you said only the UK version came with a cdkey ;)
I think there's a very big possibility it's a valid key, but I'll see if I can check it with someone who has the game already on Steam. Thanks for all the info!

You will have negative feedback (unreceived gift) until you send the winner a working key (if this key you have right now doesn't work)

You will get a negative feedback (gift not received) if the key doesn't work. Unless you'd just outright buy the game (on sale for 1,25€ right now) for the winner if the key didn't work.

There's no way to do so. You can only hope that the key will activate for the winner.

OP is pretty sure it's an unused key.

You never heard of region restricted keys?

Well, Alpha Prime is currently on sale for $1.25 on Steam until Feb. 18, so if you make a giveaway lasting a couple days or less, the worst case scenario is you send the winner your code, he says it doesn't work, and you have to buy a new giftable copy for $1.25 and send that to him. Here's a link to its Steam page for Alpha Prime.

Yeah, the exchange rate is rough. I'm just saying, if you feel pretty confident it's unused but can't totally verify, it wouldn't be a complete catastrophe if it turned out to not work.
