Probably because they overextended themselves with the rewards and underestimated how many people didn't need to buy games from them because they already had them in their library. I don't see what difference it makes though, they're still paying you to play your games.

Clearly, because it was too successful. Besides, they've probably already achieved their goal of gaining exposure for both Playfire and GMG. Now they're the phase where they try to see how little they have to spend and do to maintain the exposure and customer base without continuing to give away money. Its the digital equivalent of "Give you the razor, sell you the blades".
I imagine that once enough people have burned through their residual GMG credit, they'll start offering better rewards. There's still quite a bit of free money in people's accounts, and GMG/Playfire don't have much incentive to give away more just yet.

Because there's probably a lot of people abusing this stuff...

I'm sure they did it before hand as well. They just chalked it up to a marketing expense. Almost no one (including myself) had heard of Playfire before they started doing rewards, and GMG was just another fringe DDL site. They've gotten tremondous exposure out of it, but after a while (and probably sooner than they expected), they were giving away far more money than they were gaining in new customers.

With odd bits of credit like this, people tend to over-purchase ($5.60 in credit, so they buy a $7.50 game), so it hasn't been completely devoid of actual purchases, but Playfire credit purchases have probably comprised a huge chunk of purchases. From following the thread on CAG, people have earned a lot of money ($100+) by maximizing their Playfire rewards. And early on, you could use the coupon codes with your credit, to save even more!

Just got to wait for the right sale. Mordor for $37 right now is a good price, for those that can't wait until it comes down later.
I tend to use it on smaller things, like cheaper games and on-sale DLC for my games. Basically just think of it as sweet, free bonuses. Besides, I'd rather not save up a large nestegg and watch my account get banned without merit, like a number of other accounts.

I have 10.70 on my account and I wish to spend it on a new title or a nice deal in general.
But as you said, after reading reports of people being banned for no reason, the fear of getting banned suddenly makes me want to spend it all as fast as possible.

I would probably be close to that if it was retroactive. Missed out on tons of money because i didn't let the games sit in my steam library for 4 years rotting. Also got boned over that nosgoth first time play reward because of a steam bug that marks games as played when downloading them.

I just stopped doing this shit because time not worth's that "money", and is even worse if your currency is €, since practically all games are already much expensive to you, they don't actually give you 0.1$/€/£ for each reward, they actually convert 0.10£ into equivalent in € like ~0.12€, same for $, at least they did that when I was using it, this means $ gets more money and having cheaper games it benefits them, and £ has the actual number for example 35£ less than 40€, not currency, so this means doing less rewards they get same game as you doing much more rewards and paying with €.

Haven't been looking at it for a while as I felt it became like work and not fun but am not surprised to hear they've reduced the rewards. I'd imagine they were losing a fair bit, especially when you factor in people using SAM.
My biggest beef with it was the deals for existing GMG customers got worse as they tried to push this more. 25% off coupons that were applicable on any game in the store disappeared. They were getting rplaced by 15% or 20% off deals but only on certain games or if you spent £10, $10 or €10.
They also used to give a little credit when buying a game, most often £0.10 or equivalent, but sometimes £0.25 or £0.50. That stopped as they tried to push Playfire Rewards. It felt for a good while that they cared more about the people using Playfire Rewards than people who wanted to buy games on GMG with cash. I have approaching 100 purchases with GMG but the rate at which I've bought from them has really dropped off. They don't offer as much value for money since they started pushing Playfire.
