So I made a mod for Don't Starve which received a lot of love and hate. I was thinking, what do the wonderful people here at Steamgifts think about this mod?

clicky

Opinions? :)

It looks like some kind of cheat, and there are places where you revive in game. But, this is usefull when you got into the day 54 and you die by annoying green fishy pigs. My opinion is mixed.

These sorts of mods always get divided views. Don't worry about it.

cool, but i dont think id ever want to use it. im sure others will because it is a hard game for sure (as a beginner) you get dropped into this world, no clue what you have to do, and are simply told to not starve. i think the fun is trying to learn what to do, and dying is a big part of that. good luck, it will def help a lot of people if you keep it updated and whatnot =D

I keep it updated as much as possible :) I made this mod with the intention of making the game easier to learn, as I kept dying at first. Now that I'm more experienced, I don't use it anymore unless I want to mess around and stuff :P like attacking a spider queen with an army of pigs wearing no armour :P

Holy crap - you can create an army of pigs and attack a spider queen? I have got to get further in this game. I think 22 days is my record so far.

Give the pigs meat and they'll follow you around for a while ;)

Personally,I think it's a good idea.It suck playing so much and then randomly dying by accident. The purpose of games is to be fun, not to annoy people :P
An I also don't understand why some people are mad because of this mod.If they want they can load they can load their last save and that's it.Nobody tells them that they must :P

Haha yes, I don't see why they get so mad :P

This probably isn't the right way to fix the difficulty and pointlessness of the game, but its really all you can do without changing the mechanics entirely. I really wish the devs made it similar to "Rouge Legacy". In that game, you have a home castle, and there you can upgrade your characters along with your castle, and buy gear from a blacksmith. You get gold by venturing into a randomly generated dungeon. When you die, you are given the choice of 1/3 ancestors, with various traits and abilities, and when you re-spawn as them, you are placed back at the castle, with all of the gold from your previous run, which you can spend on making your characters permanently more effective from then on. As it stands now in don't starve, the ONLY progression is new characters, and that is it. When you die, all the time you spent is completed wasted except for "experience" towards the alternate character skins.

I wouldn't call them alternate character skins. Different characters actually have different abilities and stats, some have higher health, some of them don't lose health when eating spoiled food, etc.

As for progression and pointlessness, all I can say is, there's a point in the game where you take the fight to Maxwell (the bad guy) and you fight him. But sandbox mode is still pretty fun :)

See, this is the kind of mod that I think I'll find interesting once I've played through enough to really experience the game the way it was 'meant to be played'. I like the idea of being able to restart where I last left off and not have that failure state and being able to continue progress again.

I'll give it a try.

I don't see the problem. I mean, it's not like this is a multiplayer game or something. It doesn't effect you in any way how someone else plays their game so I don't really see any reason to hate on it. If you don't approve of the mod, just don't use it. But there are always people who can't help but hate on something they don't like even if it doesn't effect them in any way at all.

This should mod should be in game by default (as an option).

+9001 for you.

Should be in as an option, but should be off by default.

Sounds like a lot of people are frustrated with how hard the game is, I'm sure this helped many get further and squeeze some more enjoyment out of it. Nice one.

I agree with the positive-feedback givers. I dont have the time to replay the whole game just because i mis-judged the number of enemies in the area. I dont see why people would be anti this, whatever happpened to choice and free will?

This is exactly what the game needed, a casual option.

I just find the game really boring.

Tried it for a while, but it's just so... pointless.

Good mod. More options are awlays good, no matter what haters say. If you like it, get it, if you dont, do not. Simple as that. Great job there :)

I can see how it works for some. Personally I think the perma-death is the appeal to me in the game anyway so I wouldn't use it but its nice to see modding in a game community none the less. Some of those people commenting though have a serious chip on their shoulder.

Gonna join the, "I think this is a good mod, but I wouldn't use it" side. I definitely think there was a demand for such a mod, and there are people out there that will enjoy it, but it just isn't for me. Still a good mod though, thanks for helping the community.

Doesnt that sort of negate most of the challenge of the game?

Permalink

i think it would be good if some kind of bullshit thing kills you.

Like, half the point of the game is that anything can kill you at any time. This mod is like if you added unlimited balls to a pinball game.

Ill grant you that I have yet to play it myself, but isnt that kind of the point?

Whats the challenge in surviving if nothing poses a threat anymore.

The way I see it, if you die in a way which you thought that you shouldn't have (for example, clicking the wrong thing), you can continue from the last save point. And if you want to die for good, you can always delete the save :)

I don't think it negates the challenge, since the behaviour of the game is the same. Food doesn't stop spoiling, spiders and pigs still cause the same amount of damage, frogs still spawn, etc. It Just gives the user the choice of choosing to "die" at that point or trying again to see how far he can go :)

its not that.
If u play without mod, then u dont dive into situations that seem risky or unexplored.
if u have that mod on,u just dive into unknown teritory,no fear whatsoever, because if u die u just load earlier save game.

The whole game is based on building suspension, like 'can i sirvive, what is where, will i manage to deal with it,will it kill me or will i kill it etc"

With that mod, only thing u can think of while playing is "lets see if its stronger than me"

+1

e.g. if you want to explore the world, you need some preparation to do so, and you are careful as f***, with that mod ppl might tend to do stupid stuff and miss all the fun.

actually there is already a way to load the game if you die, imo this md is unnecessary, but hey, you've made a mod, be proud :D

if you don't like the mod, don't use it.

But thats the entire point of a permadeath survival game.

everything is scary and risky because if you die all your progress is gone, so while things get maybe easier the further you get into the game, they also become more risky because when you die thats it.

with this its just an "okay lets save here and then go explore stupidly, its not a threat anymore because I can reload the save file"
