I type competitively and take typing tests online for fun. Just curious what the typing speeds look like around here.

EDIT: Since it's anonymous, I hope people will be honest about their abilities! I'm genuinely curious.

EDIT 2: Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm gonna plug my favorite typing website: typeracer.com

I got 88 wpm with 97.5% accuracy. I've tested as high as 130 before, but that was after warm up and a different metric. The passage I got was a little difficult, being from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy with some unusual vocabulary, but I estimate I average 90-100 on a good day.

I think my average is 85? But I have gotten to around 100 before. I have a friend who does 140 average and can get up to 160, she always sounds like she's breaking her keyboard though. xD

If that's the case, she could actually be typing more quickly! If you body-slam your keys with every keystroke, it actually slows you down quite a bit.

I used to type fast, but once I started to get osteo-arthritis, myofascial pain syndrome, and fibromyalgia (among other things) it slowed way down...

It depends on the length as well. I could type well into the 100's with 1 minute timed, and in the 60s to 70's with 5 minute straight timers (with fewer than 3 mistakes, usually zero).

According to the website you provided, 78 wpm in English with a 96.6% accuracy. I guess that's not too bad ^^

95, but I regrettably type really inefficiently with pretty much 5 fingers, two index, two middle and my bad hands ring finger strangely enough. I've always wanted to teach myself to touch type but I really can't be bothered at this point. DVORAK also looks fun.

Wow... you sound remarkably similar to me (index to ring fingers on my left, index/middle on my right and my right thumb for space). I kind of just learned to type on my own when I was very little, never learning the traditional touch typing method. Always wondered what I could do with all my digits if I took the time to develop traditional touch typing muscle memory, but typing ~100wpm +/- 10 I've never felt the need.

I did have to take two typing classes throughout my schooling though. When I was ~8 I was typing like 20-30 so instructors were more concerned with everyone else doing the hunting and pecking. The other time was in high school, where through countless wasted hours in IRC I got to where I am now. They ended up having me do Microsoft Office Specialist courseware/exams instead of typing drills.

Interestingly enough, I think my uneven finger typing is legitimately down to gaming. I noticed a long time ago as a kid when I was doing the sign of the horns/devil horns for one reason or another, that my right hand, being my good hand wasn't nearly as flexible as my left hand. As a kid I spent a lot of time playing high paced competitive games such as RTS games and arena in WoW. These kind of games have a high demand on APM with your left hand on the keyboard, while your right hand is kept completely stiff on the mouse. Best example I can think of is LosirA, you can see how the keyboard hand is constantly being exercised whereas the mouse hand remains relatively inept as you're mainly using two fingers, index and middle + wrist, while your ring/pinkie/thumb are completely inactive.

It's probably a massive over analysis, but that's been my theory on it.

Tried Typeracer on mobile, messed up a lot and got 40 WPM...
Mobile typing isn't a strong suit of mine, but I've developed a reputation amongst my friends as being an incredibly fast keyboard masher cum typist, albeit one that is ridiculously inaccurate...
I'll try Typeracer again as soon as I get back to a proper keyboard and edit in my result :)

ETA: After a few attempts on both 10FastFingers and Typeracer on a keyboard I averaged 100-115 WPM (my current best being 126, Typeracer puts my all-time average at 109WPM) with ~2 errors each per attempt :)
Like Teliko and velocity37 above, I have a weirdly inefficient typing style - index to ring on left, index and middle on right, and left thumb for space - but I'm so fast I can't be bothered to correct that :P

characters per minute makes way more sense ...
not every word has the same length nor complexity

EN; GER probably somewhat faster but not by much, GER has lots of words requiring capital letters
~ 66 WMP // 330 CPM // accuracy: 95%+

Actually, if you use the right website for testing your speed, it takes into consideration the number of characters in each word. There is a formula for calculating WPM that doesn't actually just count the number of words you successfully type. CPM is an important part of the formula, I believe.

not sure, since i didn't care to read more carefully - read somewhere 1 WMP = 5 CPM ... which kinda makes no sense considering not every word has 5 characters ... so in the end a word with 10 characters gets split in 2 (i guess) anyway weird using WMP

Yeah, that particular formula seems a little too simple.

Appearantly 86-ish. Except I'd probably code faster than that. (Reading AND not knowing what I'm reading greatly reduces the speed for me.)

My plan is to always type faster than whoever is on the other end. If I feel like they're close to finishing a sentence, I just ask a new question or say something seductive to break their flow. Works every time.

108 wpm with 7 errors deducted. so around 100 wpm on average. I guess i would type faster if i knew how to spell more words >_<

Got about 95 wpm, but with a saw middle right finger where I recently broke off a chunk of fingernail!

I tried learning the Colemak keyboard layout at one stage but lost motivation after seeing how much work it was going to take to undo all the years of muscle-memoried QWERTY.
