The Oscars will choose the best movies of 2016 next sunday, february 26. How about we play a predict-the-awards game? You don't have to vote for each category, only the ones you recognize/appreaciate. I also know nothing about some of them xD Might add some GAs for top 10-20 winners. Idk
I'll start:
Best Picture - La La Land.
The best film I've seen this year. Perfect cinematography, sound and a great cast. Reminds me a lot of the musicals from the 1950s
Best Director - Damien Chazelle (La La Land)
He uses a lot of moving frames and 1-shot takes, both trademarks of the 1950s musicals. If you watch any of Vincente Minellis' movies you'll notice a bunch of similarities with la la land. There's a great video on youtube explaining this.
Best Actor - Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea.
Even though both Ryan Gosling and Denzel Washington were great in their films, Casey was really one step above.
Best Actress - Isabelle Huppert – Elle
I haven't watched Jackie yet, so I may be wrong, but I feel like Emma Stone, Ruth Negga and Isabelle Huppert have a shot at this. I'd go with Isabelle.
Best Supporting Actor - Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
The guy is the best thing about the movie.
Best Supporting Actress - Viola Davis – Fences.
Another category where I feel most of them have a real chance. Naomie Harris was great in Moonlight just as Michelle Williams in Manchester by the Sea and Viola in Fences. Emma will probably win, but I'm gonna go with the dark horse.
Best Original Screenplay - La La Land Manchester by the Sea would also be a good choice.
Best Adapted Screenplay - Moonlight
Best Animated Feature Film - Zootopia
Best Original Score - La La Land. Hands down
Best Original Song - "City of Stars" (La La Land). Even though I really liked Lin-Manuel Miranda's work in Moana, it's impossible not to vote for City of Stars.
Best Sound Editing - Arrival. - La La Land might also win this one too. BTW, the difference between editing and mixing i that sound editing" refers to sounds that are created for a movie, while mixing describes how the various sounds are put together and assembled.
Best Sound Mixing - La La Land Another easy choice!
Best Production Design - La La Land. The way they used colors and saturation to guide the viewer through the characters feelings druing the movie is superb.
Best Cinematography - La La Land This movie might get pretty close to Titanic and LOTR in number of wins.
Best Visual Effects - Doctor Strange. Jungle Book was also really good.

Lacking categories are because I'm not familiar enough with the nominees or just don't know anything about.

BTW, here's the obligatory gib. Lvl +1

What you guys think?

I'm just banking on La La Land hoarding most of the awards, because Hollywood love the smell of their own farts and movies about Hollywood.
Also, a bunch of black people probably gonna win after that recent ridiculous controversy :D

You were right. I think that a black actor won in almost every category they were nominated.
Btw, I saw gone baby gone and Casey really only haa that poker face. At least it matched well with his character in manchester by the sea

I was so close to picking Moonlight for best picture too, but I didn't follow my own suggestion and bet on black all the way.
Denzel didn't win tho! I guess he's not black enough anymore? :D

What did you think of Gone Baby Gone?
I think it's at least better than anything that came out in the past year.

Looking back at it now, this really was a pretty crappy year for movies imo.
No movie was even worth a 9 for me on imdb.
Last year I gave at least 2-3 movies a 9, which is pretty much the highest you can get from me, since I give out so few 10s :D.
I've watched like 2000+ movies in the past 15 years and I've given less than a dozen 10s in that time, because a 10 is basically perfection to me.

I enjoyed the movie. In the end I was half expecting him to stop daydreaming and leave the girl with Morgan Freeman and half expecting him to kidnap her himself.
I actually like some of the movies nominated this year, especially la la land, but I'm sucker for musicals. xD la la land would be a solid 9 imo. Moonlight and Manchester by the sea solid 8s

Like I said before, I haven't seen La La Land yet, so I can't judge it.
I probably wouldn't even watch it, if it weren't for the Oscars it received, because I'm generally not a fan of the musical genre.

Kubo should have won instead of Zootopia. Superior movie in every aspect.

I was actually rooting for the red turtle. Such a good animation. It's co-production between Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, totoro, etc) and a french team. It's hollywood, however, and disney/pixar movies win 90% of the time.
