Besides having a great story, music and cast, there are a bunch details that make this movie great, like the impressive camerawork and cinematography. If you pay enough attention will notice that the camera appears do dance with the progonists when they do it because they director not only shot that in 1 take, but also uses an old technic that was used in 1950s musicals to move the camera.
Furthermore the use of colors induce the viewer to detect how the characters feels and also help to create synergy between the protagonists and the audience. It's one of the reasons people gets attached really fast to the main cast in the movie. The extra saturation is also done to help that and highlight the protagonists in the middle of the cast. The easiest way to notice that is by Emma Stone's clothes and how they change during the movie. There is also a bunch of extra technical points that I'm no expert.
Idk about the hype, I just really like the movie because it's a masterpiece.

watching Fences right now (the constant talking is so annoying -_-)
actually I didn't find any of the nominated movies really good. Zootopia was probably the best. La La Land was sometimes funny. already forgotten about Hacksaw Ridge & Hell or High water. didn't find Manchester so interesting. Arrival was strange (Reminded me of 2001). found Lion the worst of the nominees. have still to see Moonlight (or did I see it?) & Hidden Figures (nah, have seen that already. has left an impression, hm?). Dr. Strange was just another Marvel movie. Captain Fantastic was great. Jackie is on my to-see-list and I havn't seen the other "female" movies. Nocturnal Animals is on the ToSee list. and Kubo & Moana weren't that interesting. Allied was ok. Didn't saw Fantastic Beasts and have no intention to do so. Suicide Squad was garbage. Stra Trek Beyond.. shrug. I don't know why I have seen Trolls till the end. Deepwater Horizon...only remenber explosions. Sully was ok but a little bit boring. Rogue One was ok. Haven't seen Jungle Book yet. Lobster was weird.
...
not a good movie year for me

Thanks!
I'll tell you this, but keep it between the two of us...
...well, you see, that's not really me in real life... I'm just trying to look good on Steam and SG, so I'm somehow keeping some picture as my avatar, and it's not even my picture. Weird, right? Not many people know, though, idk what they'd say if I told them. They'd freak out most likely, so don't tell.

Arrival, Hell or High Water, and Moonlight are all great for such different reasons. I never get into awards culture because great films bottleneck for me - I don't even see the merit in saying this great one is better than this other great one. But I love awards ballots because they always point out movies I otherwise would've missed.

The Oscars will choose the best movies of 2016 next sunday, february 26. How about we play a predict-the-awards game? You don't have to vote for each category, only the ones you recognize/appreaciate. I also know nothing about some of them xD Might add some GAs for top 10-20 winners. Idk
I'll start:
Best Picture - La La Land.
The best film I've seen this year. Perfect cinematography, sound and a great cast. Reminds me a lot of the musicals from the 1950s
Best Director - Damien Chazelle (La La Land)
He uses a lot of moving frames and 1-shot takes, both trademarks of the 1950s musicals. If you watch any of Vincente Minellis' movies you'll notice a bunch of similarities with la la land. There's a great video on youtube explaining this.
Best Actor - Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea.
Even though both Ryan Gosling and Denzel Washington were great in their films, Casey was really one step above.
Best Actress - Isabelle Huppert – Elle
I haven't watched Jackie yet, so I may be wrong, but I feel like Emma Stone, Ruth Negga and Isabelle Huppert have a shot at this. I'd go with Isabelle.
Best Supporting Actor - Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
The guy is the best thing about the movie.
Best Supporting Actress - Viola Davis – Fences.
Another category where I feel most of them have a real chance. Naomie Harris was great in Moonlight just as Michelle Williams in Manchester by the Sea and Viola in Fences. Emma will probably win, but I'm gonna go with the dark horse.
Best Original Screenplay - La La Land Manchester by the Sea would also be a good choice.
Best Adapted Screenplay - Moonlight
Best Animated Feature Film - Zootopia
Best Original Score - La La Land. Hands down
Best Original Song - "City of Stars" (La La Land). Even though I really liked Lin-Manuel Miranda's work in Moana, it's impossible not to vote for City of Stars.
Best Sound Editing - Arrival. - La La Land might also win this one too. BTW, the difference between editing and mixing i that sound editing" refers to sounds that are created for a movie, while mixing describes how the various sounds are put together and assembled.
Best Sound Mixing - La La Land Another easy choice!
Best Production Design - La La Land. The way they used colors and saturation to guide the viewer through the characters feelings druing the movie is superb.
Best Cinematography - La La Land This movie might get pretty close to Titanic and LOTR in number of wins.
Best Visual Effects - Doctor Strange. Jungle Book was also really good.
Lacking categories are because I'm not familiar enough with the nominees or just don't know anything about.
BTW, here's the obligatory gib. Lvl +1
What you guys think?
