Best Movie
Only seen 2 of those so far. Arrival was good, but neither great nor groundbreaking as sci-fi goes. Hell or Highwater was sharp, dark and on target so decidedly not Oscar material - too gritty. I will probably see La La Land at some point - I watch a lot of classic Hollywood, so I'm curious to see what they did with that.

2017 was a bad year for movies compared to '15 and '16 imho. I did like Arrival(Amy Adams<3) and still want to see Hidden Figures and Lion, otherwise none of the rest really interest me.
Edit:I suppose I wouldn't mind seeing No Country for Old Men II Hell or Highwater, although I really dislike Pine.

'15 really was a great year. I think only 1994 tops that. 1994 had The Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, Four Weddings and a Funeral... Movies that if they were released any other year would have easily won an oscar for best film.

I've barely seen any of the ones that got nominated the most, but that's the same every year really.
All the Oscar-bait stuff comes out pretty close to the Oscars and often times they aren't even out in my country at the time of the Oscars.
I might come back and make my predictions closer to the show if I manage to see more of the movies before that, but I just wanted to air out my opinion on a couple of OP's picks.
You picked Casey Affleck for best actor.
In this category I have actually seen most of the movies (3) the nominations are for and I'd probably put Casey Affleck in last place.
He is vastly more talented as an actor than his brother, but I didn't think his performance was anything special, nor was the movie anything but an above average trying-to-tug-on-your-heartstrings drama.
My pick would be Viggo Mortensen, believe it or not, but I doubt he has much of a chance.
I wonder how many Academy members even saw that movie...
Second one; You picked Mahershala Ali for best supporting actor.
This is one of those nominations I don't agree with, just on the basis of that he's barely in the movie.
I mean, yeah he's almost a leading actor in the beginning, but his character is gone from the movie after the first half an hour or so!
I thought he did a fine job, but I just couldn't give an Oscar to someone who is in the movie for less than one third of it!
The Academy has in the past given Oscars for ridiculously small amounts of screen time tho, I just don't like it.
I've seen three movies in this category again, and I'd probably pick Michael Shannon out of those nominees.

Viggo was great in that movie, but Casey's performance imho was the best I've seen this year. It's impossible not to feel the void like the character during the movie. His emontionless act is top notch. He exacerbate his character detachment from the world. Gosling performance is excellent too. The fact the he did all his scenes without a body double is a big plus. I'm a bit torn in this category. I think they will choose gosling, but whoever wins will make me happy.
Some years there are apparent favorites, but I think this year even the dark horses have a decent shot. Maybe Shannon will win. Who knows.
Also, unlike main protagonist, support characters should not be defined by their screen time, but by their impact on the movie and I think no other supporting actor had as much impact in a movie this than Mahershala Ali. The fact that he had so much impact with so little time is even more impressive imo. When I think about Moonlight only two things come to my mind: his characters and the drug-addict mother.(I wouldn't mind if she wins too)
Thanks for the comment. It's this kind of discussion that I was looking for when I created this thread.

Thanks for the reply ;).
You used the word "emotionless", which is kinda how I see Casey Affleck in every role.
He lacks a bit of range imo and seems to be always playing pretty similar characters.
Don't get me wrong, I think he was very good in this movie and a fine casting choice, but Oscar-worthy? Nah.
I haven't seen La La Land yet. I was supposed to go see it yesterday, but we went to see Trainspotting 2 instead.
However, I watched a video review from people whose opinion I usually agree with and they pretty much praised most of La La Land, except Gosling's performance.
They said he seemed like he was just goofing off doing the part. Like he didn't really care.
But yeah, haven't seen it yet, so I can't give my opinion on it.
And about the supporting actor thing.. Surely you have to agree that the nominee has to have at least somewhat significant amount of screen time?
I mean, you make it sound like that if somebody just came in and made an awesome cameo appearance for 30 seconds they should be considered for an Oscar?
And ok, you say he had a huge impact in the movie, but to me he didn't.
It's apparent because after the movie ended and I was processing it in my head, I was pretty much thinking about every other character in the movie, except him.
I completely forgot about him during the second part and only got reminded of him when in the third part the main character basically turned into him.
Yes, the character itself was a crucial part of the main character's story, but the performance itself obviously wasn't memorable to me.
Anyways, this is not a category I really feel that strongly about.
It often feels like the "give the veteran actor an Oscar out of pity, because they haven't won one yet" , or the "give the newcomer an Oscar because they didn't an ok job and there aren't any good choices" -category :D

I haven't watched any other movies with Casey, but he seemed really good doing this emotionless characters. You can see the void in his eyes in Manchester by the sea. Maybe he's only good doing this type of characters. Dunno.
I enjoyed Gosling performance, but maybe I'm a bit biased because I've seen a bunch of movies with him and I've liked all of them.
Sure. A significant amount of screen time is necessary, but good performances can be delivered even in little screen time.
Leonardo dicaprio and jennifer lawrence's award really felt that way. It's also really interesting to see the number of black nominees after the backlash that happened last year.

Oh wow, you've never seen Casey Affleck in anything else?
I've probably seen most of the movies he's been in (I watch a ton of movies :D).
If you liked him so much, let me suggest imo a much better drama than Manchester By The Sea that he's in; Gone Baby Gone.
It's from 2007, it's a crime drama and the debut movie directed by Ben Affleck.
He should probably just stick to directing tbh, because that movie is actually really really good :D

We have a very similar lists. I haven't watched any short film, documentary or foreign movie though. I hope to do it before the awards, but unfortunately it's probably not gonna happen. :/
The only difference between our lists is best actress. I liked other actresses' performance more than Emma (not that her act wasn't good, idk), but you're probably right, she has won all the other awards. She'll probably win the oscars too.

I was just discussing with my wife who I expected to win in each category, and remembered spotting this thread, so here are my picks:
Best Picture - La La Land I prefered Manchester by the Sea, but it seems completely inevitable.
Best Leading Male - Casey Affleck - Manchester by the Sea And he really deserves it!
Best Leading Female - Emma Stone - La La Land Haven't seen "Loving", and generally like Ruth Negga - but the rest of the field isn't very strong at all, and Emma should win easily, and deservedly; she was probably my favourite thing about La La Land.
Best Supporting Male - Mahershala Ali - Moonlight I actually really enjoyed Michael Shannon, Dev Patel & Jeff Bridges, but Mahershala was easily the best thing about Moonlight, and the film isn't likely to get much recognition in other categories, so this should be an easy win.
Best Supporting Female - Viola Davis - Fences Haven't seen fences, but Michelle Williams wasn't quite memorable enough to take it, and none of the other nominees were particularly good - and, Viola has been steadily growing in popularity and didn't win her previous 2 nominations despite strong performances. I'm sure it's her year.
Best Animated Feature Film - My Life As a Zucchini One of the most difficult to predict for me; can't see Zootopia winning, and between Kubo and MLAAZ I have a feeling they will go for the more quirky choice.
Best Cinematography - La La Land It should be Lion, and actually, I think it just about might... Nah, it'll be LLL.
Best Costume Design - Jackie Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I don't think LLL will sneak this one. Jackie has that touch of political overtones which the academy members will definitely want to introduce to the awards, and the period of the film is one they love. I think Jackie will take this.
Best Director - Damien Chazelle - La La Land Again, Manchester by the Sea is more worthy, but it ain't gonna happen
Best Documentary Feature - 13th Some strong docs this year, and OJ could also take it, but there seems to be some buzz building around 13th, and it really is very good.
Best Documentary Short - NO IDEA! Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of them, as usual.
Best Editing - Hacksaw Ridge HR and Arrival both certainly deserve it more than LLL, and the academy usually makes a good call on editing. I think it'll swing to HR.
Best Foreign Language Film - A Man Called Ove Tough Call. I've only seen The Salesman and AMCO, and although I personally preferred the latter, it doesn't seem the kind of foreign feature the academy would normally go for... However, I think it will get a boost because...
Best Makeup - A Man Called Ove I think AMCO will take this, which will raise its chances for the previous award. Maybe.
Best Original Score - La La Land This one is the easiest to predict :D I'd be astonished if it isn't LLL, much like...
Best Original Song - City of Stars - La La Land Obviously.
Best Production Design - La La Land It should be Hail, Ceasar! It won't be.
Best Animated Short & Live Action Short - NO IDEA! I haven't seen any of them :( I normally manage to watch the animated shorts, and there are a couple that look lovely, but I won't take a stab in the dark...
Best Sound Editing - La La Land It should be Arrival. It won't be.
Best Sound Mixing - La La Land It should be Hacksaw Ridge. It won't be.
Best Visual Effects - Rogue One FINALLY NO LA BLOODY LA BLOODY LAND! :D Very open category, and Jungle Book might edge it (which I'd be fine with) - but R1 deserves it, and has a good chance.
Best Adapted Screenplay - Moonlight It's a decent enough film, and the academy will be keen to award it where possible - although I think Arrival is probably more deserving here, in truth.
Best Original Screenplay - Manchester by the Sea I don't expect it'll be a particularly strong night for MBTS, so I fully expect the academy to give the award it deserves here, and if they give it to LLL instead I'll actually be really annoyed :D
I guess I'll be watching, although the years when one film totally dominates tend to be less interesting, so I hope there's lots of unexpected winners :D

11 correct, not bad! Quite a few surprises though. Including, interestingly enough:
Best Sound Editing - La La Land It should be Arrival. It won't be.
Best Sound Mixing - La La Land It should be Hacksaw Ridge. It won't be.
Seems I didn't give the academy enough credit on these two :D

The Oscars will choose the best movies of 2016 next sunday, february 26. How about we play a predict-the-awards game? You don't have to vote for each category, only the ones you recognize/appreaciate. I also know nothing about some of them xD Might add some GAs for top 10-20 winners. Idk
I'll start:
Best Picture - La La Land.
The best film I've seen this year. Perfect cinematography, sound and a great cast. Reminds me a lot of the musicals from the 1950s
Best Director - Damien Chazelle (La La Land)
He uses a lot of moving frames and 1-shot takes, both trademarks of the 1950s musicals. If you watch any of Vincente Minellis' movies you'll notice a bunch of similarities with la la land. There's a great video on youtube explaining this.
Best Actor - Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea.
Even though both Ryan Gosling and Denzel Washington were great in their films, Casey was really one step above.
Best Actress - Isabelle Huppert – Elle
I haven't watched Jackie yet, so I may be wrong, but I feel like Emma Stone, Ruth Negga and Isabelle Huppert have a shot at this. I'd go with Isabelle.
Best Supporting Actor - Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
The guy is the best thing about the movie.
Best Supporting Actress - Viola Davis – Fences.
Another category where I feel most of them have a real chance. Naomie Harris was great in Moonlight just as Michelle Williams in Manchester by the Sea and Viola in Fences. Emma will probably win, but I'm gonna go with the dark horse.
Best Original Screenplay - La La Land Manchester by the Sea would also be a good choice.
Best Adapted Screenplay - Moonlight
Best Animated Feature Film - Zootopia
Best Original Score - La La Land. Hands down
Best Original Song - "City of Stars" (La La Land). Even though I really liked Lin-Manuel Miranda's work in Moana, it's impossible not to vote for City of Stars.
Best Sound Editing - Arrival. - La La Land might also win this one too. BTW, the difference between editing and mixing i that sound editing" refers to sounds that are created for a movie, while mixing describes how the various sounds are put together and assembled.
Best Sound Mixing - La La Land Another easy choice!
Best Production Design - La La Land. The way they used colors and saturation to guide the viewer through the characters feelings druing the movie is superb.
Best Cinematography - La La Land This movie might get pretty close to Titanic and LOTR in number of wins.
Best Visual Effects - Doctor Strange. Jungle Book was also really good.
Lacking categories are because I'm not familiar enough with the nominees or just don't know anything about.
BTW, here's the obligatory gib. Lvl +1
What you guys think?
