It's not allowed, only Steam keys are allowed here.If key doesn't works on Steam, wait 7 days and mark is at "Not Received".

Only Steam redeemable games can be given away. The key may be legit, but it sounds very suspicious. Either way, you can't mark the game as received as he was supposed to be giving away the Steam redeemable copy of Assassin's Creed 3.

Once 7 days have expired, you can mark it as "not received". For now, I think if you click on "received" you can toggle it so it reverts to "waiting".
As others have said though, this should be reported to Support by raising a ticket. What he has given you is bullshit. Dodgy Russian websites and torrents have no place in the process. He either needs to give you a Steam gift, or a working Steam key. There are no other options.

I think not.
Time to read the FAQ, amigo.
Doing this is a very good way for both parties to get suspended or banned. Games need to be activated in Steam, and if they aren't, the winner runs the risk of getting into hot water, both for not activating and feedback freaud.

It means mark it as not received here and give it back to the person, rather than mark it as not received and activate it like an asshole. Also, marking it as received and not having it in your Steam account can get YOU banned for feedback fraud. So yeah, think about it before doing something stupid. :)

I can't do anything with the key and I'm not attempting anything with that Russian torrent site. I did toggle the received feedback to off now. I shouldn't get into any trouble should I?

Nope. You're all good.
Also, make sure you report it to Support, so he doesn't do it again.

Hey everyone. I need some help trying to figure out a giveaway. I won a copy of Assassin's Creed 3 this morning and the gifter emailed me a key and a link to the original distribution page. The key doesn't look like any key I've ever put into steam and it won't work in steam either. It's set up like this example: 000-0000-0000-0000-0000. The page I was given was all in Russian and when I translate some of the text I've come up with lines saying to download this torrent I need to register on that site. Is this a key that can only be redeemed in a certain region? Is this something that is allowed? What can I do to get the game I won? I've already marked the game as received since I did get a key and at the time I thought it was just another way the keys could be entered into steam. Am I screwed because it's already marked as received? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
