Think you are the only one. Every person I have talked to have said its a big improvement over the first one.
I love both games, and I actually agree with the people who say it is an improvement. The areas you can go to to harvest materials as well as the bombs you can use now, and the new enemies makes the game a bit more fun in my opinion.
Heck some of the defense missions get a bit hectic and actually gives you the feeling like the sh** has really hit the fan in the later defense missions.
Keep in mind I have not played Riptide with other people. I have only played the first Dead Island with a friend once or twice.
I have 64 hours time spent playing Dead Island and currently 11 hours time played Riptide. Right now I am sorta bouncing back n forth between a few different games. ( According to Raptr that is )
I played Riptide a LOT in offline mode so a lot of achievements I should have are not there, + its missing a lot of time spent playing. I have already beaten the game with the new character a while back.
The only thing about Riptide that I do not like is that I wanted more. ( IE I wanted a longer game, more missions, longer storyline, ect. )
However I still had fun playing what was in the game, and I do plan on going back to it to max out my level with the new character as well as re-gain the achievements that I should have but don't due to offline mode >< ( My internet went down for a while, played it during that time. Also played Allen Wake during that time, oddly got the achievements for the game in offline mode.. but not for Riptide. >< )

Probably just you. I found Riptide far better than the first game.

Short Answer? No.
Long Answer? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. ( Ok done :P )
Honestly though, not sure why anyone would think otherwise. Steam/Valve is a good company, but they would not be that stupid. One extra selling point to games on steam now is if it has cards or not. Some people now are buying games if they have cards regardless if they want to actually play the game or not. Silly and stupid I know, but a lot of people are doing that.

You won't get any cards from any game which you have not actually spent any money on at some point (includes Free to Play).
