I know this topic has been asked before, but my boyfriend and I are looking for new suggestions so we want a current list!

So two questions: What is your favorite movie of all time? Also, which movie did you not expect to be as good as it was?

If it fits our interests, we want to make a list of movies you guys suggest and watch them!

obligatory answer of my own. I have several fav movies, but I'll go with Terminator 2 or The Prestige. The movie that surprised me was The Lego Movie.

Here are some small giveaways. I hope everyone has a fantastic New Year!

My favorite movie of all time is Mama, which dethroned long-time champion, American Beauty.
Number 3 on my list is the one that surprised me: Maleficent. I hate Disney and everything it stands for, but Maleficent wound up being something I really enjoyed.

ooo I have never seen Mama but I love Pans Labrynth so I'll have to give it a shot!

I feel the same way about Maleficent. It's such a cute story and I love a good mom/daughter bond.

Favorite movies:
Let's say my favorite movies are the ones that I from time to time watch again.

Die Hard 1 2 and 3
The Fifth Element
The Hunger Games and the original Japanese
Crank
Mad Max Fury Road

to name some of them

Fun movie I watched this year...

Jojo Rabbit
The Irishman

I try to watch my movies without seeing any Trailers since these days they give away way too much information.
So going in blind is preferred

We've seen all of those and those are some good picks! I agree with going in blind. I love trailers because they get me hyped for a movie, but lately I've been disappointed in how much they give away.

Hard to find a true favorite, but it has to be either Galaxy Quest, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, or 12 Monkeys.

The movie that surprised me (a lot) was in fact one of your favorites: The Prestige. The theme, rivalry of stage magicians in London, seemed so uninteresting to me that I procrastinated watching this movie for years. Finally I told myself that being directed by Christopher Nolan, it cannot be THAT boring. Let's just say I was shocked! :)

I agree, I didn't know what to expect from that movie and it was great, one of my favourites. Also 12 Monkeys is also really good.

ah man I forgot Galaxy Quest. I used to love that movie as a kid and I'm sure it still holds up great.

Also yeah I saw the Prestige as a kid as well and I was reluctant to watch it, but I loved everything about it. It turned me into a Chris Nolan fan and i've enjoyed most all his movies since!

Thats hilarious that you have a name for it. I love being pleasantly surprised by movies. Especially when you expect the worst.

I've seen about half of those, but I'll check the other half out! Megamind is really clever and I wish it got more recognition!

Hard to think which one is my favorite (There are many many many). But the movie I definitely can watch again and again is Need for Speed. I just love that Shelby and Imogen Poots is so god damn cute in the movie.. and I suppose Aaron Paul for girls as well. Its not the best movie Ive seen, but from top of the mind - one of my favorites anyway. (I could mention - Alita, Mad Max, Interstellar and so on, but I dont doubt youve seen all of these popular movies)

As for surprising movie - as Im not much for dramas, I watched Nocturnal Animals without knowing what to expect, but ended with increased heartbeat and excited.. A positive surprise that has stayed with me (But I remember you asking movie suggestions before so I might as well have suggested this movie before, but if not - hope its something youre looking for :) )

I added both! (I have seen Alita, Mad Max and Interstellar :P)

You may have suggested it before but I haven't seen Nocturnal Animals yet so I'm glad you suggested it again :)

If I had to pick one movie, it would be The Fountain (Daron Aronofsky). Beautiful film with a great story. I feel everytime I watch it, I find a little detail I didn't pick up before. The way the story is told leaves a lot of room for interpretation. So it's almost like a puzzle where you try to figure out what's real, what isn't and how it's all connected. The actors are great, the score is phenominal and it's all just very emotional.

I have no idea which is my favourite movie but I always loved both The Godfather and the Godfather part II.

Both are from the 70s and I belive that the 70s were one of the most influencial and important decade in the cinema, at lteast for modern directors.

Edit: A movie that surprised me? Hum... I don't know.

EDIT2: If it worths something, the movie I want to see the most now is 'The Lighthouse'

I guess it's a tie between The African Queen and True Romance.
A special mention to Pleasantville, but I haven't rewatched this one since I was in my early 20's so not sure what I would think about it now.

As for surprises... dunno, I usually have a pretty good hunch regarding any kind of media so I rarely watch/read/play things I'm not sure about. So... Spider-Man: Homecoming maybe? Never was a fan of Spidey and just went to watch this one with friends, but it turned out a pretty cool movie.

A few of my favorite movies (each for different reasons) are toy story, wolf of wall street, gattaca, inbetweeners movie, summer wars, a weekend at bernies.

I get surprised all the time tbh, not in a this movie blew me away sort of thing but just being better than I thought it would be. Probably only thing of recent memory was a silent voice. But i watched that going in blind with no expectations.

Hard to pick one favorite movie, so I'm gonna name three: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Spirited Away and Alien.
As for most surprising movie... I was blown away by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and did not expect that at all.
I never found Spidermans story interesting, but in this one they gave it a nice twist. Plus visually it's absolutely stunning!

I should have also put Spiderman! The live action ones were just okay for me, but Into the Spider-verse had me hooked from start to finish!

I'm not sure which one is my favorite film, but Top 3 would be:
Lawrence of Arabia (I might give edge to this one; saw it in cinema this summer, it was awesome)
Donnie Darko (need to rewatch to confirm this)
City of God (also been a while since I saw it)

I offer a ranking of my movie ratings, you can filter them by genre etc.
There are too many favorites and great surprises to write them down in a comment each time someone is asking. ;)
