Could you explain why stardew valley is loved so much? It just looks like a simple farming game where you can get upgrades and have a storyline.

Because it was made with love and care. The dev response to customer is extreme good, we have 5 patch with bug fixed and new features since the game come out (less than a month). Finally, it fullfill any weakness Havest Moon series have, which is a dream for many fan.

It's a little hard to explain, and even the best explanations won't entirely capture it. Part of it is the charm of the characters, and part of it is the relaxing atmosphere. Where most games use combat for the basic gameplay, Stardew (Or Harvest Moon, or Rune Factory, or Animal Crossing, or...) provides small chores and low pressure, so you can just sort of slowly chip away at your work and relax, let your real life fade a little bit. The upgrades you get make your starting chores easier, but also introduce new chores to do. So there's a bit more complexity than it seems at first.

There's also some attraction in slowly building stuff up. If you've ever lost hours to a Minecraft or Terraria project, it's a similar feeling. You plant/water crops tile-by-tile and get lost in the work, and over time all that effort builds up to new tools or crops or building and it feels like a big accomplishment by the time youre done.

Stardew Valley just pulls it off better than most other games like it. It sort of takes mechanics from HM/RF/AC, and mixes them into one big farm sim. Seeds and crops largely work like Harvest Moon always has, but it also adds the monster combat and deeper crafting from Rune Factory alongside neighbor interactions that are sort of 'Harvest Moon meets Animal Crossing'

If you're all about high-octane thrills in gaming, don't bother with Stardew Valley. But if you appreciate the slower style of any of those games, definitely check it out. It's one of the best there is for that genre.

Good to know, after searching internet I was under the impression that it's a genre, because many are referring to games like this as "Harvest moon game", but I guess it's just a series of games, named "Harvest Moon"

Going a bit off topic...
I never played this kind of game before and well... I suck at it.

All I want to do is build a nice farm with loads of flowers!!

I don't have paypal, it got blocked a few years ago, people scammed me there few times and refunded their money (I hate paypal, it cares only for buyers, sellers are not protected).

It's good to see consumers come before business for once though there are other ways of selling good/services like Cash, Credit card, Eftpos, Bitcoin, bank transfers etc, if it is really an issue but if your a good business it shouldn't really be too much of an issue i'd imagine. also I have never used paypal to buy something from HB =P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really, because thanks to that paypal has a lot of scammers. They simply rarely listen to arguments, proofs, they take buyers side whenever they can. They should look more into cases and realize scammers use it to their advantage. There are a lot of posts about it, a lot of sellers whining, getting scammed, their accounts getting blocked, money frozen. Paypal is not the best payment method, well, at least not for sellers, it is really good for buyers though, can't argue with that. There are different payment methods and I'll look into them pretty soon as I want to create more giveaways soon :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's something a seller probably shouldn't use unless they have measures in place to stop scamming or big enough not be that effected by the few dickheads out there but it's something that can help a business by giving more confidence to the buyer that they ain't going to get ripped off they can increase sales

Permalink

Yeah, that is true, a lot of sellers avoid using paypal because of their "buyers are right mostly" policy.

To giveaway or for myself?

The former: Fallout: New Vegas - the game in that price range I most enjoyed recently.

The latter: Stardew Valley. My partner loves Harvest Moon style games and will doubtless love it.

I wouldn't spend any money on that game until we see will it go pay to win or not. It seems like it's going to start freemium (which means it'll be pay for convenience which is not much better than pay to win).

I was very hyped about that game long before they even announced it's coming to steam but lately the more I read about their F2P model and what they're doing the less I want to play it.

well i've played the closed beta and enjoyed my time there, while i don't necessarily agree with the direction the game is going , i still think that for 10$ i can get enough hours out of that game

I wanted to get " The Talos Principle" while it was on sale. Unfortunately I had spent the last of my paypal funds on "Life is Strange", but it's all good & the sale is over anyway. - reason? I like puzzle games even though most of them hurt me poor old noggin.

Other than that, maybe "Infra". It looks like a boring (maybe) way to waste a bit of time. :D

Yeah it's a great game. I've only played the first episode so far, but I prefer it over all of the episodic games of TTG I've played. It feels a lot less restricted / linear than say TTG's The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us, which are also great games.

  1. Kona. There's something magical about this game. I saw it and I instantly wanted it. Seems like my kind of game.
  2. Human Resource Machine. First time I saw this title I was very intrigued. I've checked reviews and it seems like very good puzzle gem.
  3. Californium. I've enjoyed Dick's novels so I'd like to try that despite mixed reviews.
  4. The Mean Greens. It's a comeback to my childhood! And pretty awesome multiplayer shooter as well, according to the reviews. Do you need anything more?

If you get mass effect 3 at some point, get the third ending dlc (you get to choose your endings) I won't spoil anything but the third ending seems to be the most admired one.

Turok :Dinosaur Hunter
An old game ,but a masterclass in how to cram hours of gameplay in a few megabytes.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, but the enhanced version of Turok on Steam is more than a few dozen megabytes large.

The original version of Turok -- this nostalgia trip's also included in the Steam version -- is faithful to the N64 version, which cartridges only held a maximum of 64 MB -- this is the one that is as you put it "only a few megabytes large"

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

well yeh :)

But some of those n64 games are still pretty cool .
Gameplay was first and foremost and graphics were still great considering the game size..
I was playing one of the zelda games recently in an emu and i think the file was 30mb or something .
Very atmospheric sound too ,one of the things that made N64 games so memorable .

I'd get the Founder's Server : Exclusive Access 3 DLC for Tree of Savior because I have been waiting for this game to come out to EU/US since it was released in KR. I want to play it as soon as possible but I won't be spending £30 for the DLC 'cause it's not based in EU.

If holding to what that could buy today ... I'd pick up Contrast. Been wanting to play that for a while, missed the last sale on it.

If it went on sale for under $15 ... Hyperdimension Neptunia 1.
