Would you at least tell us the game? It looks like a complicated puzzle and I know some of us would be rather miffed to go through a ton of work just to find out it's something we own already.

Well, it's a week long, so you can try when you are bored just for a challenge.
If not, thanks for stopping by and thanks for supporting Valve, lol.

At the off chance a problem comes up, be sure to use a UTF-8 text editor. I don't think it will be a problem though, unless you start saving UTF-8 as ANSI in notepad or something... As long as it can be pasted into the online tool(s) and turn the ??? characters back into their proper UTF-8 format (meaning your browser supports UTF-8), it should be fine.
Comment has been collapsed.
I believe notepad should be fine, but if you get an error about losing information due to changing to ANSI, do NOT allow it to convert (lose data). Change to UTF-8 on the Save As dialog.

I probably should have put some spaces in there to make it easier to comprehend. It's very simple.

I am getting that the header information is expecting things that it is not getting (file size and checksum) thus claiming that it is corrupt. Do I have to modify the file before I start decoding? (I hope I am not giving away too much!)
Comment has been collapsed.
Try another website, or make sure you are saving as UTF-8.
Once it is in file form, leave it that way until you get the instructions. Then it doesn't matter because it's just notes at that point.
If you guys can't figure it out still, then add me and we can talk it through on IM and see what the problem is. Tomorrow though because I am off to bed.
It should be very simple. Save as a file, convert text file to a binary file with one website/tool, convert binary file to plain-text with another website/tool (can be viewed/saved as a file or text right on the website).
Comment has been collapsed.
the first step doesn't work for me, keeps complaining about file-size mismatch (or just "corrupt" with an offline tool)
Comment has been collapsed.
If there is a difference (selecting the line number things, for example), please copy/paste ONLY the "raw paste data" into a new text file in UTF-8 format. Otherwise, try the "download" link on pastebin, or try the former if you already tried to download.
Comment has been collapsed.
Mine shows no difference, both are the same file size and don't match the checksum, making the online tools very unhappy.

Thanks. This forum has a very strange formatting. Double space for a line break? Pound symbol to bold and increase text size? Strange indeed.

Please check my lastest comment (not reply), or the original post as I edited it. Maybe that will solve your problem.
Otherwise, maybe you are getting confused by "binary" file. This does not mean to encode/decode binary like 011001 type thing. Binary file just means it's not in plain text and can have any formatting scheme. You must find the format (should be easy as hell) and use a tool or website to get the text (further instructions) out of this file.
Comment has been collapsed.
OK, for those having problems with the first step, let's take pastebin out of the equation.
You SHOULD be able to go from text to a file to binary to text again, but let's keep it all as a file for the first two parts.
Here is a direct download instead of pastebin: link THIS FILE WORKED. The pastebin text (swear I tested it, but maybe not) doesn't seem to work.
Also, if you have a problem altering the binary file back to text, then please make sure you tick the option for "GZIP-compatible encoding" (but only if the website you are using has this option, otherwise it might work fine). I figured it would try both, but you HAVE to select it. I wouldn't haved used that option had I known this, but I used it in case it increased the ability to use more websites or offline tools.

Thanks for the feedback! OK guys; 2/2 say it works, so get to crackin'. Sorry for the bad start.
Comment has been collapsed.
I did it online (even step 2), but I just tested with a tool and it also worked (no errors at least like with pastebin), so it should be fine either way.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hm, I tried with several online tools - did not work for me.
I just downloaded the tool and it worked.

=/
Sorry that you had to use an offline tool. It should work strictly online, otherwise I would not have used this method.

np ;)
I also managed to decipher some stuff in the plain text, but now I'm stuck.
will try again tomorrow.
anyway, thanks for the puzzle =)

The extension is new to me as well, but a decoder program I tested today actually filters by it (so, it is probably a commonly used extension for the encoding).
You might get some insight by looking at (not modifying) it in a text editor (notepad will suffice). It should give you a good hint as to what the next format the file will be in as well. I suppose you could use the pastebin just for looking if you want, but I wouldn't try to decode it from there.
Comment has been collapsed.
meh, can't be bothered to actually break that ciphe - actually can't even find your old thread so that hint is pretty much worhtless :P
no more puzzling for me - you guys make it too hard and in the end there's only the "exists in your account" anyway :P
Comment has been collapsed.
They said the last one was "too easy." Then I said: "Challenge accepted."
Comment has been collapsed.
Who said "too easy"? Anyone has solved it without your last hint (without bruteforcing)?
Maybe you don't realize how much this one is hard.
Comment has been collapsed.
well, with the hint from the old thread it's fine :P
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes. Several. Not everyone will figure it out, and that is the point. It's a challenge. Sorry if you couldn't figure it out. You are the odd man out.
About 10 people have solved this one. Only 2 have entered (didn't have it already). I would say that is "mission accomplished". Those 2 are probably really happy that no others can figure it out and that is kinda the point. The last giveaway I held got 20 people into it (and probably more that didn't want it or already had it, so add a few to that).
To be any good at this game, you have to be a super nerd, so I think the difficulty goes hand-in-hand. Hell, if the first 3 guys that solved it already had the game, that kinda tells you something...
Comment has been collapsed.
What kind of hints? Really, nothing is unsolvable because you can Google any part of it and either find the answer directly or find out what you have to do/use.
Unless it's a word problem (you are near the end of the decode), EVERYTHING can use a tool online to solve/decode/decompress/decrypt/translate.
Comment has been collapsed.
The first one was too easy in the "trivia" part. I felt I needed to amp it up a bit. I tried to be unique. Something new. Love it or hate it. I could have spent more time on it, but then maybe it would have been too hard. They should be pretty easy to solve if you sit and think for a minute. If you think longer than that (on the word problems at least), then you are probably thinking too hard. However, besides maybe one of them, you shouldn't be able to solve it just by glancing at it (instant recognition).
Comment has been collapsed.
I guess I am thinking too hard as I don't recognize pretty much anything. Maybe problem of not being American. I have hard time trying to guess what you had in mind with what you call the "numbered hints to the giveaway URL"
Well #1 is one I haven't cracked through yet but seeing my trouble with the final stage of others, not sure if it would've helped. #2 - it's wild guess, maybe I'm right but not sure although at least superficially not being a native speaker may indeed prove troublesome. #3 - what the heck are you asking us to do lol but still I can think of at least 3 words that could describe it and many more obscure ones. Unless I'm totally missing the point. #4 - that's maybe the one I'm most sure about (only one?). #5 - again no idea I found some stuff but that doesn't help to guess what you meant.
There are some things left for me to try with this stuff because maybe I am indeed totally missing a point somewhere, but otherwise I'm totally drawing a blank on most of these. I mean I'm okay with this, won't be the first puzzle that I didn't solve, just reserve a right for myself to do some whining =)
Wait what.. I shouldn't be able to solve it just by glancing?
EDIT: for the note though, I did enjoy cracking through these, just have no clue what to do afterwards xD

All of the encoded/encrypted stuff should resolve down to words. This is the "trivia" part, or "word problems", if you will.
The words either have an answer or represent the next and final encoding. One represents the exact letter. The other four have one final common "scheme" that they share.
The best advice I can give is to try to solve them parallel as they use some things in common (for the encrypted part anyways). Once you solve one word problem or trivia or whatever you want to call it, you will have your "scheme" of how the rest are to be answered.
Hints 1 thru 5 represent the X's in the first post. You must put them in the order given (1 = first character, and so on) and match their CaSe. Thus, you are finding the exact URL by solving the riddles.
As I said, at least one can be solved instantly by just looking at it. That should tell you how to solve the rest. They have a common scheme to them. All but one, which I can't remember if that was on purpose (repeated character) or on accident (simply skipped a step). Probably the latter as I wrote down the "answer" for it and never used it. =x

I just realized I made a typo in the decoded instructions. The extra hint says "compression" when it should be "encryption". Sorry about that. Too late to fix now. In the context though, it should have been noticeable that it was an error on my part as I continue saying "encryption/encrypt" etc.

One single bump.
No new comments (here or giveaway) and no new entries. Still has 4 days left. I'm starting to think that is entirely too long. I dunno if everyone seen it and tried, or if some missed it since it's not being bumped anymore.

manipulating the file is easy.... decoding 5question inside it.... not so easy
"The only clue I will give you, because I feel I must or it might be unsolvable, is there is a compression I used that can encrypt non-alphabetic characters... This is all I can tell you.
I didn't use it in my last giveaway, but you might find a similar encryption used in that one; You might even call it it's "sister" since it only encrypts alphabetic characters."
LoL seems I'm late T_T got no time to decrypt what's inside...
Comment has been collapsed.
I got to the same step! I am hoping that a solution gets posted so I can see what I missed.

I lost the original notepad decrypted stuff.
For those still interested in solving, I will try my best to recontruct from what I remember of it.
First, the file is binary (file, not as in 01010010 stuff) converted to ASCII using yEnc (a method used to post binary files on text-only Usenet/Newsgroups). It should have worked as text, but it didn't, so I had to use a file instead (kinda defeated the purpose of it). It can be done online or using a program.
Second, you can already see a hint in the yEnc filename (if you opened in a text editor). It's gzip. Websites use it to make pages load faster, so it too can be done online. If you are lazy, you can just use 7zip (not tested with winrar). Open it from there into notepad. I used a compression to make the hints much smaller
Now you get your 5 clues. Each is encrypted/encoded with online tools. Some can even be done in your head (like the ROT47 of morse code if you just associate the character with a dash or dot).
What encryptions/encodings were used? (In no specific order):
Anyways, here is the giveaway URL: http://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/mReDR/dota-2
It was Dota2. Many solved it; only 2 entered (out of respect, already had, didn't want, etc).
If you have anymore questions, let me know. I will monitor this for the next few days for you die-hard puzzle solvers that just want to solve it even though it's over.
For the "trivia" part:
Fiddy Too = 52.
Tongue twister = letter "R" (only one to not need Hex-to-ASCII).
Sexty with all fingers of one hand (IIRC). Sounds like sexting (sex texting) with one hand. It's just "65". Sixty and Five (fingers).
Forgot the rest. Sorry.
I went crazy with rot13, so if you see words that don't make sense but look like they could be words, it's probably rot13'ed. The dutch words are rot13'ed so it's really difficult to tell it is decrypted/encrypted.

Thank you for posting the solution. I was stuck at the last cipher only ("one" and "oh" strings) but I guessed correctly the game of the giveaway so I wasn't motived.
I'm not sure I could solve all though. Congratulations to who solved it without brute-forcing (if anyone did it). ;)

This giveaway will last about 1 week due to complexity and a good giveaway!
URL format: http://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/xXxXX
x=lowercase
X=UPPERCASE
You must replace X/x with the given numbered hints to get the giveaway URL.
[http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/91wob/faqrules-and-guidelines/page/31337](steamgifts rules)
DO NOT POST/LEAK ANSWERS/HINTS/URL! YOU CAN GET SUSPENDED!
Figure out the URL and enter into the super-private giveaway (only accessible to those that solved it) for better odds of winning.
I WILL NOT be giving hints via IM on steam, so don't bother. However, if you think I made a mistake that makes it impossible to solve, I would like feedback. If you can't post it here without giving away a hint, then PLEASE IM me instead. I will neither confirm nor deny anything, but I will tell you if I screwed up somehow and fix it.
===================================
Due to the constraints of this forum (removing single breaks, which is really dumb IMO and makes it impossible to do my giveaway 100% here and not even mentioning the annoyance of making your post come out readable without spamming double line breaks to compensate) my giveaway will have to start on pastebin.
Edit: It seems you CAN force a line break, but it requires altering the data. Besides, it seems there is a problem using direct text anyways as pastebin seems to corrupt as well.
DO NOT USE THIS. I doubt it will work for you.
http://pastebin.com/khczPNhA
Use this tested/working file instead!
dropbox file
Your journey begins here manipulating this text (file) to get your clues.
I would have loved to have had this strictly here and strictly text-based, but my methods didn't work well copy/pasting text when I tried to decode, so the first 2 parts will require to manipulate a file. Sorry. However, you might find a method/website on your journey that works perfectly fine only using copy/paste text and no files...
===================================
To the moderators or nitpicky security freaks:
You DO NOT have to execute anything with this file. It can be done 100% online!
It's 100% safe. The first stage is a text file and the second is a binary file (must be manipulated by an online tool and output as text or a text file for the clues).
You can even manipulate the files offline with tools, but I wouldn't have someone installing/running things just for a giveaway. Both methods are very common with Usenet tools though.
===================================
Still stuck? Errors?
Please make sure you tick the option for "GZIP-compatible encoding"
