Downgrading drivers may require you to remove the one you're using at first. Nvidia gives instructions about that here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_13955.html

"Did this." - What exactly did you do? You're not exactly explaining what you've all done so far, how are we supposed to help?
Also, did you read through m0l0's link yet?

If you're sure you actually removed the drivers (although you should double check with some sort of driver cleaner) and the new ones don't install, you might be on a laptop with annoying drivers.
Go to your manufacturer website and see if they have updated drivers. Else you'll have to do something really annoying which involves ripping open the new driver package and modifying quite a few text files to manually insert your hardware IDs, which will let it install. I had to do this for my laptop for a year or two before magically Nvidia drivers started installing just fine.
Yeah, just make sure everything is wiped clean. Any trace of Nvidia or AMD or whatever should be gone from the computer, and double checking through the Device Manager is also a good idea.
Installing drivers via the Device Manager might also work as a last resort, I had to do it a few times. Freaking manufacturer specific hardware.
