So, let me see if I got this right:

  1. You are complaining because Valve got tired of dumb people crying they got cheated out of their items or somehow someone found out what their password is [as I said - dumb**]?

  2. You do realize its the same thing they now force you with emails only on mobile, right?
If you still don't get what I'm saying, that means after enabling it you can disable any unwanted further notification.

**To be honest I doubt if even this app will help those people.

Are you saying if you can set up the mobile authenticator through some kind of sorcery or witchcraft without a compatible device, you could disable it again and go back to just email verification and do away with the three day nonsense that will probably mess over traders who don't have MA especially with expiring cards during sales? If so, I like what you are saying!

I'll try and get my Android Tablet to work with this again, but last time I required an SMS message to confirm it, and the tablet can't get an SMS. People suggest Bluestacks, but I never managed to get an SMS via that either.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, you misunderstood me.
Currently if you are trading you need to verify the action via email unless you disable the option. In the same way, after installing the app you can go to the settings and disable it [on by default] from requiring any further confirmation. It's a one time action if you don't want to deal with the app again [you don't even have to be logged in afterwords].

And no, I didn't miss the point as you have chosen to ignore point #1 which we all know is the reason for the app and the email verification in the first place.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I did choose to ignore point one because protections were in place before this, and you yourself pointed out that this may not be enough to help those people!

Hmm, I guess I had just read your previous comment with wishful thinking! Not familiar with the app myself, thought it was an option in it. Had me excited there for a moment!

Well, no.
I believe it was either Lewis Black or Ron White who once said "You can't cure stupid".

As for your problem, there might be a way.
In your 'Account Details' under 'Contact Info' you have an option to enter a phone number for verification purposes. If you do that and only afterwords install the app on your tablet it might send the sms to the existing verified number**.

**Haven't tested it myself though.

I tried that, sadly it doesn't do anything. Can't verify the number without an SMS.

It does exactly that. I can't install the app on my phone, but I verified the number, installed the app on my tablet, and the SMS was sent to my phone and then I confirmed through the app.

While I agree it shouldn't be mandatory, there are still a lot of people complaining about their lack of a smartphone. There really isn't an excuse to NOT own a smartphone now. Computers are pretty much an essential now, and within a few years, smartphones will be too.

What the fuck? How about the 'Maybe i do not want a smartphone?'. I'm in my twentie's and i got my first one a couple months ago and it was because i won it in a contest, otherwise i would not need it, the only difference between my smart phone and my old regular phone, is apps and games and better internet access

Comment has been collapsed.

Why don't you want a smartphone? Is it because they're too mainstream? Bloated with features you don't need? Just because you don't need them doesn't mean you shouldn't have them.

The amount of people using old phones is dwindling. Smart phones ARE regular phones now. People have to learn to PROGRESS, and if you don't want to, then people shouldn't complain when a company like Valve gives them a shove.

This made me laugh out loud. Besides, he's not saying you shouldn't have them, he's saying you shouldn't have to have them.
Why should you have to have something you don't need? I personally can't justify 50/60/100 dollars a month for a phone with a voice/data/text plan. As it is, I barely use my $40/month cell phone as it is (voice only).

I agree they are integral to most people's lives. (Although, most of us got along fine prior to smartphones.)
But I'd turn your statement around and say "just because you think YOU need it doesn't mean that they ARE a necessity in everybody's lives." =)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, the only people who own the old cell phones now are people who haven't upgraded from the early 2000's.

Every person who buys a phone now and for the foreseeable future will opt for a smartphone (some models are just as cheap as flip phones).

So tell me, which population would Valve rather tailor to? The small group of stubborn people who refuse to upgrade, or the masses of people who own smartphones?

Regarding your cell plan complaint, check out this contractless phone. Heck, you can even buy an used unlocked phone, plug in a sim card from any provider that provides pay as you go plans.

Even though I advocate progress, I'm using a hand-me-down iPhone 4 from my mother, and it only has texting and calling. I refill it with credit, and only make calls when I have to. I rarely make even $2 worth of calls/text's a month. So really, smartphones are inexpensive, and those $40/50/60 plans are only the luxuries of luxuries.

Seeing how Steam's authenticator requires a smartphone, we can now classify smartphones as a Steam necessity because according to a dictionary, a necessity is "something necessary or indispensable"

:^P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I understand Valve's business decision, and I don't think it's a bad one. I just wish those of us in the stone age could "opt out" and perhaps lose any right to complain if you lose digital Steam assets.
I should definitely switch to some kind of prepaid/pay-as-you-go phone. I even looked into it briefly. I finally gave up due to a combination of frustration, confusion, laziness, and apathy. =)
Maybe the Steam thing will be that final push I need. I also want to keep my current number I've had for 10-plus years.
BTW, how is that phone no-contract if it says $45/month? Obviously I'm missing something.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No-contract phones can be cancelled any time and technically don't cost as much and take as long to have the phone unlocked because a contact phone (1-2 years = unlocked phone, paying 45 a month), but a contract-less phone may only require you to use 6 months of it before it becomes unlocked.

However, I believe that doesn't meet your requirement. So what happened with my mom's iPhone was that she bought it unlocked, and she used her SIM from her old flip phone so it was the same number (since new numbers could cost you). You'll have to do some research on carrier compatibility.

I don't know about the US' carriers, but in Canada, we have a wireless giant called Rogers (you've probably heard of them, if not, owell) who offered a "Top Up" service. You buy codes in the form of giftcards from grocery stores, and you just activate it through your phone and it gets added to your balance. The only catch is that you have to top up at least $25 a year or else your balance expires.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Some people just can't afford a fancy new smartphone tho. Or may have more important things to spend on for the moment. It might not be the case in the US but... not everyone lives in the US either. Right now I own a "used" phone that I'm not sure if it can even be considered "smartphone" despite it being touchscreen and all... because its quite old and useless by today's standards (it only goes up to android 2.2 and has very low memory size). I had a better one that got stolen last year. I just cannot afford to buying a fancier phone for now (and for quite a long time). It worries me when companies bring out a "mobile guard app" because I'm afraid it might not be available for older android versions :/

It's AT&T. It's also $30/month, but with all of the fees and whatnot, it has slowly creeped to $40/month. Texting is extra to send and receive, so I have it disabled. And again, I can barely justify the expense.

Comment has been collapsed.

Why would i want to spend money on a phone if i already have one? Simple as that, having a smartphone is not a need. Just because i should have them doesn't mean i want them

That logic has so many flaws, so can't just inflict those changes in something millions of people use, that's like making cars go away, and saying everyone should use now private planes, and then 'hey, either you progress or you have no right to bitch about it'

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You cannot even compare vehicles with phones. A plane requires certifications (including a pilot's license) that takes years to acquire, and the skies aren't big enough for everyone to own a plane.

However, phones are completely different. Anyone can buy one. They're very accessible. Heck, they even have smartphones under 100 USD with no data plan that you can get at Wal-mart.

Think of it like a gaming PC. Your specs are outdated, and you can't play the latest games. A new game releases that requires the latest specs and you really want to play it. Can you complain to the developers and have them dumb down the graphics to accommodate your specs? No. You cannot. Because you aren't the only person on this planet. How many people use Steam? And how many of them do you think own smartphones? The amount of people who own or use (perhaps a family member's phone) a smartphone these days is easily larger than the amount of people who don't. Walk around school, go into a coffee shop, look around you on the public bus. Smartphones are incorporated into everyday life now.

I really don't want to sound rude, but Steam wasn't made for only you. They're trying to implement features to tighten security (how many scammer complaints do you think they receive every day?), they may not be doing it well, but at least they're trying. While everyone in this thread can hate me, Steam isn't trying to tailor to your wants, they're trying to please the majority, and your complaining isn't making the situation better.

Speak for yourself, I don't have money to buy one, even If i did, i wouldn't because i dont want one.
Exactly you are using an example with a situation that i would comply since i want the game therefore i need better pc.
I don't wan't this bullshit security and i don't want to have a smartphone .

Smartphones are incorporated into everyday life now.

You are right there, that doesnt change anything towards my opinion, having one is optional.

they're trying to please the majority, and your complaining isn't making the situation better.

Im also not trying to be rude, just exchanging oppinions. Majority, how? Don't you see how many people are complaining? This is just like the region locks, did they pleased the majority too? They don't even ask if users want this, they just implement, and i can guarantee you that the % of people not wanting this is better.

You are not seeing the point, i like security, i like having my account and itens protected, BUT I DO NOT LIKE TO HAVE OBLIGATORY SECURITY STEPS, that will fuck up trading, even more.

Lol, no. Giving in to unreasonable demands just because it's more convinient is laziness.

To give an example:

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's like the most retarded thing I've ever heard... Painting your hair green provides no benefits, so not doing it wouldn't make you lazy, and "giving in to 'unreasonable' demands"? What?
Many giveaway things simply ask you to sign into Facebook(which isn't at all "unreasonable", so having an account provides benefits indefinitely, even if you painting your hair green gave benefits, it wouldn't last forever, so in order to keep the benefits you'd have to keep painting it, while FB takes like a minute to sign up and you'd be able to enter those giveaways for a long time, without any real downsides...

Edit: I dont actually think I've ever seen any hair paints in stores or anything around here, only dyes... Having to use paints seems like it'd be annoying...

Edit 2: And by your logic, I'm lazy for sleeping while laying down instead of standing upright while I sleep...

Bravo! It's just your logic pushed to the limit.

To make it easier to grasp. If I think FB is shady business and have no wish to share my data with it, it doesn't make me lazy. More, giving false data, even to "bad" entities, is a no go for me. It is all about principles, not about being too lazy to reap benefits.

Well the reason I don't want a smartphone is that I live in my house. I have a House phone. I am a physically disabled person and I really cannot see the need for a Mobile/Cellular Phone when I leave the house for about 1 hour every week. It's not exactly high on my need list.
As for progress, there is always a reason to grow, to learn more, to expand our knowledge... but Progress just because it's bigger/smaller/faster/prettier is progress for progress sake - and that leads to consumerism gone rampart.
I believe I have a reason to complain when people fix what is not broken. But maybe I'm wrong.
Tell me... How is your upgrade to fire going?
Have you reinvented the wheel lately?
Your alternative to sliced bread taking off?
Thank god you have finally gotten rid of vinyl and replaced them with indestructible CD's because we all know CD's sound better eh?
My point is some things need upgrades - Humans have been doing it for millennia (Maize to Corn etc), but at some stage you get to a point where Improvements become cosmetic or commercially overdone.

Valve is making a change because, news flash, things change, if you don't want to move ahead with the rest of any modern civilization, that's your problem, and if you aren't a part of modern civilization, why do you expect it's comforts and luxuries to be catered and brought to you?

Because everyone literally owns a smartphone and anyone who doesnt is a goddamn troglodyte.
Ooh look selfies and games, wow such need, much essential.

But in all seriousness, I think he's confusing 'essential' with 'convenience'. A smartphone's features are all in all just for convenience(ex. GPS, on-the-go-shopping/internet, etc) because the only things that are really essential on a phone are its ability to call and text.

Anyway, I assume Valve is gonna have to make a PC app for the non-smartphone users(which Blizzard did, with their authenticator for PC), or else there'll probably a lot of pitchforks raised.

There really isn't an excuse to NOT own a smartphone now.

The only reason I switched to Lumia from my old Nokia 100 was that I needed a dual-SIM phone which could alert me when I got a work-related email while I was away from my workstation (which can be half of my day sometimes). Otherwise I never needed one and even the company-issued Galaxy was just sitting in a box for years.

Smartphones can be convenient sometimes, but the actual "need" for them never existed outside the business area.

I don't have a phone capable of receiving a text message! I know the Google Guard (whatever it is called) will call even my Rotary phone and tell me the code. Tried that with Steam and didn't even get a call.

Have you tried something like this or this on your tablet or even Google Voice?

Google Voice is USA only unfortunately. Also both of those appear to need you put your Cellphone number in to them. Doesn't seem to work with my land line.

Ahh I forgot that about USA, hmm that sucks. I will use my GoogleFu and talk to some people and see what I can find. I'm sure there is an app out there that will allow this to happen.

I know with my carrier I can text a land line but I don't see how that helps with Steam unless they can somehow do the same thing. It just charges me $0.99 and reads the text when the person picks the phone up on the call.

EDIT - ZipWhip seems to be it but I've never heard of it or looked into it.

as it can't receive the call to confirm it

It seems like you can activate via e-mail rather than an SMS.

I currently get the Emailed codes (non-mobile), if I can set up the App then just get them to continue emailing without the trade restrictions (and having to carry that tablet everywhere) would be great!

I don't have a smartphone =/ If they'd just said people without mobile authentication can't get items recovered by support if they're scammed, then whatever. But a three-day hold could be a pain in the ass.

It seems that is part of the intention. Valve doesn't want to be put in any light that relates to underage gambling.

I tried this piece of crap a couple weeks ago. It didn't tell me when I started the process that it would pop up a recovery key on my phone, that would only be shown one single time, that couldn't ever be retrieved for any reason, and without it I wouldn't be able to recover my account if it was hacked. Since it didn't tell me this I wasn't prepared to write this code down, and while scrambling for something I accidentally hit the back button on my phone - code gone, forever, with no chance of getting it back. The only thing I could think to do was just remove the whole Steam Guard mess from my account, which succeeded only in locking me out of my account on every computer and device for several hours until I could get re-verified and set back up. No way I'm screwing with this crap a second time.

You know you could just set it to work by email again and then re-enable it to get a new code, right?
Took me less then 5 seconds.

Also, why would you remove the program BEFORE disabling the protection it provides?

Huh? I just checked and under 'Steam Guard' on the android app and there's an option to see the recovery code anytime... :p It does say it won't be shown again but it's still available to check each time I open it.

They might have changed it then, but when I did it, the code came up with a message saying something to the extent of "write this down because it's the only time you'll be able to see it." Maybe they realized that was a pretty stupid way to do things and made it so you can see the code later if you need to. If that's the case then maybe I'll give it another look.

DonΒ΄t you need a phone-number for the authenticator? I wish bluestacks would work for that.. no intention to get an iPhone or Android device for that..

Valve, what has happened to you!?

That is true, but install a free text messaging app on Bluestacks (like Nextplus or Textplus) and then put that # in.

I don't have a smartphone, I'm too poor to afford one. Heck I can't even afford to renew my mobile phone card thing.

Anyway I assume those of us who don't have a smartphone will be able to use android emulator (genymotion, bluestacks, etc.) to do this. Run the application in the emulator, use e-mail instead of phone number to receive codes.

It'll be really annoying to bother with that crap though, I hope they'll give us an option to disable this security measure like they allow us to disable e-mail confirmations for trades.

But not to so poor to have a Gaming PC a and a steam account with 321 bought out 387 games and giveway $160 worth of games on steamgift.com! Priorities man!

I don't have a gaming PC.

Most of my games, and when say most I mean more then 90% were obtained through giveaways or trades (I'd trade cards I got from free games for bundle games). A friend bought me a steam wallet card once so I could unlock steam market, then I made some money selling SOADA items (unfortunately that MOBA is long dead so I'm not getting any more income) and I used that money to buy games to giveaway and to buy a couple for myself. Also bought some SoG's with that money to trade for better bundle games.

Don't make assumptions about people when you don't know them.

My assumption were based on the statistics I could find about your account which are faulty or you are lying, most likely the first option since I can't confirm them to be precise and you deserve the benefit of doubt.

Well you have a pc and you use to play for me that's a gaming pc, not a High-end one but a gaming PC nonetheless, or you wouldn't be able to play, anyway It was intended as joke, since I myself wasted money on steam, money that I should have put to better use, but it seems I overstepped. If you want to waste your time and limited money with games is not my business.

"Starting Dec 9, anyone losing items in a trade will need to have a Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator enabled on their account for at least 7 days."
I'm not sure but worded like this, wouldn't it mean that only "gifttrading" would be affected ? aka trading Items for nothing in return?

Tablet doesn't seem to help as I have tried over a dozen programs, including ones that gave me free phone numbers! I now have 14 phone numbers! Cellphone with SMS capabilities only.
