I've already enabled the trade confirmation by mail. Don't tell me that they want to enable ALSO that? I don't want to use this on my smartphone.

Its their attempt to kill off traders and the like. Customers don't matter.

I think it's mostly an attempt to protect people from the hacks that set up a proxy on your PC. They re-route your Steam client requests to create a trade offer with all of your items. Sure, the e-mail confirmation goes to your mailbox but since all internet traffic is going through the attackers proxy they also have the confirmation code from your e-mail - if you open your mailbox on the same PC it makes your Steam inventory nice and clean :P

It makes sense since both changes they made help with this exploit. A mobile authenticator makes this kind of hack impossible and if you don't have one you can rollback the trade for 3 days before the trade is actually completed.

If you don't have it, odds are the other person won't wait 3 days for you if they do have it! They will just find someone else (Refering to Cards here.) Plus that 3 days will play havoc with trades during events (like Winter/Summer Sale) where they have trading cards that expire. I need X, person has 20 of them on the last day and is trading. Offers trade, card expires before trade completes.

It is either situation. They push escrow service to diminish SteamGuard Email users.

Mixed feelings really. Because I have the app on my phone for a good 5 months now but never really use it. What's gonna happen if my phone doesn't have service? Seems like a huge load of crap too me but those discounts seem nice.

Delayed gratification will be a bigger concern here. Those of us who can't/don't want to spend $60+ a month for a mobile plan Cheapest plan local, just called around and visited websites to find out will have to wait 3 days before our trades process? Odds are the item you are trading for will be long gone by then.
Maybe they will release a keyfob like my bank has. First one is free, replacements are $50....

Until you have to use that every time you make a trade, on every computer you use. For me, that is my work computer, my home computer, my tablet, and my lectern at the college yes I have made trades while my class is on their 10 minute break!.
It's been a while since I used bluestacks (over a year) but I found it didn't really work all that well. Very slow and prone to just erroring out. I never did find a way to get SMS verifications via that either... mind you I didn't try terribly hard.

When this is going to be a thing in a couple weeks, the flame war will truly commence.
Like, the whole Steam forums will know no other topic anymore, until GabeN will once again have to admit defeat with the words "Hey, i thought i'd get away with that".

Hopefully they will trash it before the Winter sale cards! Having to wait 3 days to trade during that time will be a nightmare (especially at the end in high trade times).

Valve really isn't a well run enough company to justify giving them even more personal information they don't really need. Sorry. Not doing it.

Yahoo can sort of half get away with this. And even then I'm still laughing at the idea that I'm going to give them a phone number to play Fantasy Football after 3 years. Good luck with that.

Well, if the CS/TF2 traders could boycott them for just one month… the amount of money Valve would lose just on those trade fees would not only make them revoke this stupidity, but Newell himself would make a public apology and offer free games for anyone. Because even that would be a smaller loss than those tens of millions.

Phone number has to be a SMS/text capable phone. Doesn't mean anything to the people who are upset by this! Unless you can figure out how to get a text on a Rotary phone, I am still up the creek!

Valve is offering to let people use phone numbers in place of the app

Where? I didn't see anyplace to set this up. I can receive text messages, so I could deal with that.

That's just to add a mobile number to your account for security, to receive texts if you need to reset your password & such. Doesn't look like it's a substitute for mobile authentication, though.

do I need to insert authenticator code everytime I login or only 1 time like battle.net?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It says every time you log in. Battle.net was every time for me too. At least I could use my tablet for that but it did make me stop playing my games on there. hmm, I feel like playing X... now I need to dig out my tablet... seems I need to charge it because it doesn't hold a charge (never did, Google said that is normal background operations and wouldn't replace it despite it dying in 3 days if unused). By the time the tablet was charged I had played something else.

Steam will soon require the highest level of account security for instant trades.
Use a Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator to secure your account and get a discount in the Market and instant trades.

giving a discount to mobile users, valve must be really desperate to get people on their stupid app

Highest level of account security apparently being that anyone who steals your phone can empty your steam account with no problems. Meanwhile someone getting access to your PC at home means there are far bigger problems than simply losing a phone.

It doesn't have to be simple. And if they're getting through that, my Steam account certainly isn't the first thing I'm worried out. I can completely wipe my phone remotely anyway.

Unlocking phones requires like 1/1000 the effort of hacking someone's PC to get access to their Steam account. And unlike some seem to believe, that's really never happening to people who have any clue and don't allow it themselves. "Sure I'll check this malware.ru link you gave me for some $$$$ knife, then click yes yes allow allow please install all"

The email and no authentication options will still be there. But your trades will be held for three days.

I find the mobile authenticator much more convenient than email.

I wonder if we will start seeing "mobile authenticators only" in trading threads? I often use the trading subforums in the game community hubs to swap single cards, but how is one supposed to know if the other party doesn't have mobile auth and the trade gets escrowed?

Then why are people saying it needs to be sms capable and tablets don't work?
I do have a freaking cheap android tablet for testing puposes. It's a damn security
leak, I have to reset it to factory default like every week, because ethe browser get's hijacked
by some update... how can they even claim this would increase security.

Okay, if you look at Steam's instructions for installing that mobile software it clearly says:
"Steam will send you a text message with a confirmation code.", it also says you have to enter your phone number.
I really wonder how you got around those requirements. I suppose I could just give it a try with my secondary steam account.
But then again, Bluestacks only runs on Windows ... I work on Linux most of the time. That is really annoying.

ok....my bad...i did it almost month ago....so you really need atleast normal mobile phone to confirm that sms, but for using it, no
i send it at home "dumb" mobile phone, since then i just use my bluestacks....sorry for my bad memory :D

Okay, I just found out something very interesting. That App runs on Android x86 just fine. I will try your trick with a dumb phone tomorrow,
but I managed to install the app an log in. The major advantage over bluestacks is, I can run Android x86 directly from Virtualbox under Linux.
Also unlike bluestacks it does not require me to pay or install third party apps, in fact there's not even a playstore, which I don't need to run that shady steam auth-app anyway.
