I think that there should be a distinction between gifts and keys giveaways.

How can a gift be treated like a a key from a bundle? It was for "certain" purchased in steam store.

For example, i just gave way a steam gift, and noticed that my account GA value didn't change.

In faqs i noticed, then, that the game was in bundle list, but mine wasn't a bundle key, it was a steam gift!
I think it's a little unfair for the steam gifts!

But there's no way to legitimately know if you're giving away a code or a gift. Some people buy the gift after the giveaway, so it's impossible to distinguish. This is the same reason why you're not allowed to give non-Steam games; Because it's impossible to tell. In this case, instead of knowing whether it activated, it's knowing which is which

So, i'm guessing that in 3 years we will have like 99% of steam games in this list :/

only if you give the gift to a bot and then he give the gift to the winner

Well, I think we could do it, when you check when you get the gift from someone, you could also check the option for "Gift" or "Key", could see it working :)

It's probably impossible to implement but what would be really cool is if SG had permission to read your inventory, so when you make a GA you get the option to either pick a gift in your inventory OR pick from the list which gets treated as a key. So you can only make gift GAs for games you have proof of having.

I like this idea. It would deal also with most of those fake giveaways that got canceled in the last minute!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It would be possible by using a bot as a mediator (like in "that" other site similar to this one :D).

You give the gift to the bot -> the bot give the gift to the winner.

And if you spot that the winner has been guilty of ballbaggery? Not activating? Multiple wins for the same game? Obvious duplicate account? Too late. Stupid bot coughs up the game anyway.

Their comment was actually pretty constructive considering the topic of the current discussion.
RazielAntemos only stated that it should not make a difference because CV isn't as important as people make it seem.
In my eyes this is constructive because it shows his opinion on the subject in a pretty clear way.

Now your comment, on the other hand, isn't constructive towards the subject of discussion at all, and by you posting your non constructive comment you cause other people to react towards it just like I am currently doing, which causes the main subject of the thread to fade away more so than RazielAntemos's post would ever have managed to by itself.
Yes, i am aware that this post isn't constructive towards the thread but next time, please think before telling other people to comment only if they have something to add, because by doing so you are doing the exact same thing.

How could support know for sure if it was a gift or a key?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know! But maybe with some feedback from the winner.

The giveaway"er" could create it normaly but define if it was a key or a gift.
And the winner could give some feedback. If he received a gift or a key.

If it was a key, it doesn't add to the CV.
Even if the winner, say it was a key, despite it was a gift, it could be easely solved with a printscreen by the giver.

I always take prints of my givings, so if someone says i didn't delivered it, i can prove to support i did!

What about people who give away Keys for AAAs?

In a Playblink giveaway for example, the gift must be traded to a bot, before the giveaway starts. I think Gameminer does it similar (but they also allow keys).

You do realize Steam Keys aren't only obtained from bundles, right? It can also be obtained from other sellers. So your suggestion is really unfair.

Yeah this is stupid. There's no point of giving away a gift, you pay money and get nothing for it. Yeah it's unfair. But rules are rules. And you're not forced to giveaway gifts.

It was not a sarcasm. What's the point of giving away gift if you do not get anything for it? Just give away a key, it's much cheaper and you still get nothing, but at least you'll pay almost nothing too.
To be clear, i'm talking only about bundled games which dosn't have any value.

I actually agree with OP. If you give away Steam gift that you have bought in Steam you should get full CV value. How to make it work? Well, SG administration has to figure that one out. Some kind of checkbox and after that automatic inventory check if user has the game gift in his inventory maybe... But yes - this whole bundle thing has got some huge minuses.

if you're giving away games for CV, you're doing it for the wrong reason!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

there should be a selection after the winner recives the gift/code , so they can either check that its a recived gift, or a recived key, and the cv should change like that

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

and what would you do if you sent gift and it was checked as key or sent a key and was checked as gift?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I doubt some one with a gift would checked as as key.
I think it would happen mostly the other way around: keys being checked as gifts.
As long as the winner reported exactly what it was received would be fine!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you can't see a loophole here, you haven't been paying attention.

People could offer sweeteners (trading cards, additional games, ets) to tick the "gift" box. How would that ever be picked up? Oh - it wouldn't. Not unless you expect an already beleaguered Support team to individually check proof of purchase, and/or screenshots of Steam trading history on a case-by-case basis, just so a few disgruntled users can snaffle an extra 10 points of CV.

You really haven't thought this through.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And how do you check if gifter did not convince winner to check "more CV" box? Take it on example of current false feedback when people gift origin/uplay keys and winners check as received even if they did not get game for steam (following the logic of "I got free game after all") or "I don't have the game anymore, can I give winner something else?" (because "free game is free game, no matter if it's not the same one")

Not this hoary old chestnut again?

This topic has been done to death 1,000 times on here, and the conclusion is always the same. What can be abused invariably is abused. If you're in doubt, check the egregious ballbaggery surrounding the Blackwell Deception giveaway. The opportunity for collusion between gifter and recipient will open up a massive, and easily exploited loophole in an otherwise relatively watertight system.

Add in the fact that Support don't have endless amounts of extra time to police this, and it would be an unmitigated clusterfuck.

That system would have too many flaws so it all boils down to this:

  • If you really spend money on Steam gifts and really care about CV, avoid games that are marked as bundled.
  • If you care about giving, Steam bought or bundle bought, then CV shouldn't matter that much to you anyway.
