HoMM 6 probably has the weakest core gameplay of any game in the series since the first one. It feels scaled back and a bit bland actually. Most of the issues with the game eating your save data has been fixed with patches, but the keyword there is most.
The game fully deserves its mixed review score. It has issues. It's still a HoMM game and it's not terrible by any means (when it does not eat your save data), but it's not great either. At least it's less buggy than HoMM 7.... (HoMM 7 is a game I can't recommend at all. With the last patch, and yes it's officially the last patch, they introduced an AI bug that makes the AI kill its own armies in combat. Fun times! Also, it loves to munch save files).
If you're hankering for something HoMM-like, and have played the rest of the series already, check out the Age of Wonders series instead. If you want a game that's mostly about HoMM-like combat, then check out the King's Bounty series.

Does it delete save data often? I'm really not thrilled when that happens.
HoMM7 sounds like a lot of "fun" with a bug like that.
I have the first Age of Wonders game on GOG, it's pretty fun. I have King's Bounty: Dark Side and that game didn't impress me much.

Not all that often, but you can lose tens of hours of gameplay when it does remove your save data.
Dark side is generally considered to be the weakest part of the series, I think, but they're all very similar. So if you did not like it, you'll probably not like the other King's Bounty games.

i fully recommend Kin'gs bounty, but i liked HOMM6.
and i though my saves were dead cause i'm unlucky :)

I'm not big on refunds and i stopped torrenting stuff a long time ago. There's just too much of an annoyance to get the games working. Granted, some of them work better than legit versions of the game. :S
Aww yeah, Heroes 3 is awesome <3 The Disciples games are also a lot of fun <3

Actually for now, Uplay is not the problem (but still annoying). There are still some bugs but i didn't experinced fatal ones, maybe some graphical issues with alt-tab. You can go for it when the sale time come. If you were not a fan of HoMM, probably i would not recommend it. I still enjoy it though. (HoMM 3 is still the best (Not the HD one ofcourse.) )

I've read forums posts where people complain that they can't connect to Uplay. Like i said in my post, i had mixed experiences with Uplay.
Yeah, i guess i'll wait for a sale and see if i have some spare cash.
I really don't understand why they made the HD remake of Heroes 3. It's just the base game without expansion packs and they charge a pretty high price for it.

Things like that happens quite often. The company that made the game went under ages ago. So it's no surprise that some things were lost along the way. It's probably in somebody's attic or in the archives at Ubisoft or something like that, and nobody knows exactly where, because it was moved there nearly 15 years ago.

I haven't played HOMM since HOMM 3. I found that my skill level was too poor without resorting to cheats. I played the first two HOMMs (including the expansions), and completed them both (loved them as well), but I never completed it. I would love to start the series again, but I'm afraid the AI is too good for me (unless there is a way to "dumb down" the AI).
Sorry I wasn't able to give you any useful information, but here is a bump for your thread.

I'm pretty sure I played on the lowest difficulty, but I guess I could be wrong. I just remember that if I turtled, the attacking army was HUGE, and if I roamed the map to get to places quickly, the AI armies were still too powerful. Wasn't there a fan-patch (or perhaps it was an official patch, I'm not sure) that made the AI easier?

actaully, Hpmm5 was prettty stupid AI
and Homm6 isn't that amazing either ;)
i really think 3 had the smartest AI -but you know, Nostalgia ;)

The one in 3 (and 2) just cheated a bit more than the AI in later games ;) There were actually ways to exploit how the AI cheated. It had perfect information, and would only attack if its army was at least a certain percentage stronger (depending on difficulty), so you could switch troops between heroes and see how the AI moved to figure out how strong the AI's armies were.

i actually did that a lot with my heroes.
and once i had townportal and dimension door nothing else mattered anyway ;)

Thank you for letting me know! Maybe I'll reinstall them one of these days (I have them all on CDs), all the way up to HOMM5 (Limited Edition). I also have most of the Expansions for HOMM 5 as well as all of the Chronicles games except one. What are the Chronicles ones like? I haven't tried those ones out compared tor the early HOMMs.
Comment has been collapsed.
The Chronicles games are just straight up campaigns, with no skirmish or anything of that sort. I've played the first two campaigns, and thought that they were better than the campaigns in HoMM 3. But it's still just more HoMM 3 with nothing new added apart from new maps and story (and no skirmish mode).

hmm, i'll try to remember to write later.
i liked Homm6, with it's expansions.

ok, so you reminding me helped ;)
i liked the game, despite being simpler then the previous ones.
the story was fun to follow, and you had to complete all campaigns to open up new ones.
each campaign was with another faction, so you got to unlock them all which is the way i like it...
as for bugs, i had the save bug apparently, but only with the online saves, i kept mine mostly offline, so i was fine.
as for other bugs? not very much.
i also liked the artifacts you can unlock with points you get in game. think of Steam achievement, but if unlocked you get a bonus item/hero in game ;)
all in all, i have over 300hours on Homm6. so, yeah, i recommend.
as for Anno2070, bummer. i liked it.
although, Anno1404 is better imo

How simple is it compared to Heroes 3? Is it a big jump in complexity? I've also read somewhere that some towns didn't make it over to Heroes 6, is this true?
I read that you can't use the dynasty weapons when you're offline. Is it a big problem?
I really wanted to play Anno 2070, i like the futuristic setting.

I can't help you with UPlay because I haven't tried it yet. Actually, I had HoMM VI on my wishlist until I've heard of the horrors of UPlay, then removed it xD
HoMM III is the best anyway :D Oh, have you tried WoG mod for it? It really changes the gameplay and it was refreshing after playing so many hour with regular HOMM :)
Thanks for Hercules!

Stop bother with HoMM series, Ubisoft really know how to ruined the series.
Try King's Bounty series instead, but stay away from Dark Side, unless you really get into KB series.

The Legend => Crossworld => Warriors of The North
Try the game with some challenges like no loss (The easiest one), lower number of days (in-game) to complete the game, highest score ...
Sorry for my English !

I wouldn't hold out much hope for the franchise. Ubisoft doesn't seem to know their ass from their elbow when it comes to putting together a proper HOMM game. Heroes 5 was okay (in particular Tribes of the East) and probably better than it first got credit for, but still wasn't quite what most longtime fans wanted, and it looks like things have really taken a turn for the worse with Heroes 6 and 7. You would think that they would have learned with 7 after the state that 6 was released in, but no. Anyway, like someone said just look to Age of Wonders 3 (or older titles) instead. I'm not quite sure how they compare, but Legends of Eisenwald and Sorcerer King also look kind of intriguing.

Sorcerer Kings is interesting. It's a highly asymmetric 4X game, where you start as an underdog, going up against a far more powerful foe (who follows very different rules to you). There are also other weaker players who start at the same level as you. It's not really HoMM-like, and it lacks the replay value of most 4X games, but it's still quite interesting and worth a couple of playthroughs.
Eisenwald is closer to King's Bounty, but with a slightly strange combat system (and no unit stacks). It's fun, but even further from HoMM than KB.

My problem wasn't with Uplay, but with the game display itself. It would randomly lose the ability to display anything other than a black screen. The bug that I ran into apparently had to do with the fact that they never bothered to make the game work on laptop graphics cards. Before you buy, make sure that your graphics card is supported. I remember being very upset at the time, because in one section the system requirements were listed in such a way that made it look like my graphics card would have been fine and then in another section, they more explicitly mentioned that they didn't support laptop graphics cards. Good luck!

H6 - just bad. They introduced some new things that are weak compared to previous mechanics. It's not as different as H4, but still... Many little things that made me stop playing really fast. I tried many times, with patches and expansion... I still love H3 and H5 though.
H7 is what H6 should be in the first place. OK, without bugs ;) But there are not that many of them to be considering H6 instead. In hot seat it still works and brings friends(enemies) together.
Anyway... Just stay with 3/5. I'd love to say "7 too", but high price and bugs...
UPlay - I had some problems with synchronizing saves, but overall it's not that bad.

I know that Heroes 3 is generally regarded as the pinnacle of the series but I really liked Heroes 2 as well, even though it felt a bit unbalanced in some places. It also had the best music of the series imo with it's bold operatic and orchestral themes. I remember those being streamed off of the installation CD though so I don't know if the same holds true for the digital version. The Heroes 3 music was okay by comparison but definitely a step back from Heroes 2 imo, plus I remember the sound quality being hurt by low-bitrate MP3s.

I've never played it but heard it's much different in some way than the good HoMM games. Plus it uses Uplay.... I hate getting games on Steam that requires additional client :P
Thanks for the giveaways!

I'm considering getting Heroes of Might and Magic 6 on Steam. I'm a fan of the Heroes series and HOMM6 looks interesting, BUT it uses Uplay and i've read the reviews on Steam. Quite a horror story. Is the game really so buggy like the reviews say? Is it unplayable because of Uplay? I've had mixed experiences with Uplay so far, wasn't able to play much Anno 2070, because it had some problems connecting to Uplay, but it worked flawlessly when playing Blood Dragon.
Edit: So far i'm more inclined to get HoMM6 during a sale. Keep those opinions coming and thank you for taking the time and sharing your experiences. :3
