should i pay double for ultimate or just get the base game?
Yes, but not necessarily for the reason you think.
The DLC itself is pretty good, and you can find them inside the base game - everything is integrated into the base game. But the real reason to get the Ultimate edition is for the mods. Modding for New Vegas (and Fallout 3 before it) is huge, and many of the mods require having all the DLC. If you're missing the DLC, you may not be able to run certain mods, or you'll have to use old and outdated versions.
So get the Ultimate version and save yourself a huge headache. And it's only $2.50, the DLC and better mod support is worth that much.

Yes it’s worth it. They’re each small expansion packs. When you leave the starting area you’ll pick up a bunch of signals on your pip boy, these are each of the dlcs. They have their own stories and side quests. It’s been a while so I don’t remember them well (maybe time for me to revisit) but I remember enjoying them.

I've only played one Fallout and it was New Vegas. I put over 100 hours into the game and haven't finished it yet!! It's one of the greatest single player games I've ever played, easily worth the $5. If you've been waiting to pick it up now is a really good time.

I'm usually fine with the base game only but I eventually got the Ultimate edition and I didn't regret it one bit. The DLC's were pretty cool, I think there's only Honest Hearts I didn't like much and rushed a bit. If I remember well, you can't get to the DLC parts/areas until you've reached a certain level. (or maybe you can enter it but at your own "risk". But it's been a while since I played and I may be wrong on this.
Anyway, I did mod my game and as someone mentioned a bit earlier, some mods require you to have the complete edition in order for them to work properly.
Whether you're into modding or not, I'd say Ultimate is totally worth getting as the DLCs add quite a lot of content.

I know I'm going to get a lot of hate and more than a few blacklists for this, but I really thought New Vegas was only a sub par and mediocre game. If they made the game with a similar premises and took out the Fallout name, it might have made more sense as it had almost no feel of a post apocalyptic wasteland and just a toxic dump site in the Mojave Desert, which in and of itself, constitutes a wasteland. Yes, there were vaults but they were completely optional and none had anything to do wit the story. You aren't even a vault dweller which also loses the idea of a Fallout game.
Plus, it was FAR too easy. Even I, a player that sucks at EVERY game I play, was able to beat it on hardcore with minimal issues. Except for the fact that I wanted to do an explosives build but with the weights of the weapons and ammo I was forced to abandon it sadly.
So all in all, if you like New Vegas then by all means like it. I, and my RL friend, have never really cared for it and would not recommend it. ESPECIALLY if this is your first Fallout game.
And yes, I do have 281 hours played. That's because the game did have one of my fatal flaws to it. I can NOT leave a single inch of the map unexplored in games like this. And I do have to admit that Old World Blues was one of the best DLC's I have played in a long time. The sheer humor in it made up for a lot of the main games vast flaws. Hand members anyone? :P

i’ve played fallout 1, 2, and 3. i wasn’t sure about playing in first-person with fallout 3 but still ended up getting into it. not too worried about vaults so i think i’ll still enjoy new vegas, but i definitely appreciate your insight!

Without a doubt, go for the Ultimate.
Like someone had mentioned, the DLCs in the Ultimate version are all story DLCs (Pretty good stories at that), and frankly speaking, the Ultimate version costs just a little bit extra - it's worth every cent of that little extra you'll have to pay.

i've been waiting for 75% off fallout new vegas and now it's here! now i just have to decide if i should spend double to get the ultimate pack that probably includes all of the dlc.
most of the dlc sound like missions -- will i find those missions within the main game?
