A few hints:

  • This isn't a multi-step xlate conversion exercise, don't let a quick binary conversion put you off.
  • If in doubt, search.
  • Parts of the pub smell of herring.
  • You don't need to come back to SteamGifts.com until you're told to.
  • Final hint

One of my favorite puzzles so far, despite not making it in the end. Just missed that itstoohard hint, had all else! :) Thank you for the opportunity and the puzzle!

What's the next step when you see "ZP6N813R" on the video?

the key words there are pasted and bin - google them and you'll find a popular website for storing bits of text. the code goes in the URL (in a similar way to steamgifts/XxXxx puzzles)

Is it something hidden in the script? I've installed greasemoney and the script, nothing happens.

Ah sorry I got mixed up there - you don't need to install the script just look through the source code for a link to some music

The solution is explained here already, in fact you saw it before when I misread your question and said to look at the end of this thread.

I finally solved it, thanks for the help, I'll never figure out without them.

That was a fantastic puzzle, thanks Mikecupcake! Really, really well done. I got stuck in the pub and then forgot to come back to it. After seeing the solution I like to think I would have found it, but I had already stared straight at that sentence and considered it a likely clue while failing to actually figure out what to do with it, so who knows.

Thankyou, looking back I think I should have made that page a bit less mis-directy. I might try to team up with someone next time and have two brains to make an even better puzzlehunt + notice stuff like that before launch.

I read the comments on the giveaway page and I still don't get it.

The Pub? the whole page after the first couple sentences is just misdirection. you get a hint when you submit the form and it says "blah blah it's too hard" then you use the initials of "6 Weekly kegs, Hope everyone zooms every Jug!" to get a itstoohard.com page

I feel a little better knowing that I wasn't stuck behind something stupid like improper capitalisation. :D

However, after picking up on the Greasespot and Pastebin hints, I really should have noticed the itstoohard reference... but I could help but think that there was significance to the double space in that message. (I thought it was the result of spaces before and after a conditional statement of some sort.)

I didn't notice that doublespace had ended up in there or I may have realised it could be interpreted like that, oops. If I use a googleform again I'll make it clear that they can't respond differently based on input.

I shouldn't have ignored my hunch that the pub's name and location (technically not in south London from what I could tell) were hints in themselves.

Now I'm confused, name and location?

If you search herring pub london it comes up with The Red Herring and The Alfred Herring - in the boroughs of City of London and Palmers Green respectively.

According to the lists on Wikipedia, neither of these boroughs is in south London. That's one thing that could give the idea that something's amiss.

The other is the when you use it in context of the hint: the pub is a red herring.

Not a well-worded hint on my part, I was trying to imply 'parts of the pub page are red herrings and should be ignored'
