Hi SG, we have an exciting update for the community today, allowing users to create giveaways for gifts or keys that are region restricted.

How do I create a region restricted giveaway?

If you visit the create a giveaway page, you'll see a new section with the name Region Restrictions. At the moment you're able to select from five different regions: Poland, RU+CIS, SE Asia, South America and Turkey. This list will likely expand in the future to include other popular regions that are available. If you have a gift or key for a region that's not listed, we ask you not to post it at this time. Giveaways incorrectly listed, or region restricted giveaways created before this announcement will be removed.

How do I know if a giveaway is region restricted?

Region restricted giveaways appear in the giveaway list with a globe icon, and you'll notice the region name is visible next to the icon when viewing the giveaway. If you click these icons, you'll see a list of countries within the corresponding region. You'll only see giveaways on the homepage that are region free, or giveaways that are within your region. If you try to view a giveaway for another region, you'll see an error message.

How do I specify my region or change it?

As of yesterday, users select a country when registering on SG, setting their Steam region. If you're already registered, your IP address determined your country, and it can be viewed on the account page. Please double check this is accurate, and you're entering to win giveaways for the correct region. If the country is incorrect, and you're entering giveaways for another region, you'll be unable to redeem any games that are won, and we require all gifts or keys to be activated on your Steam account. If you need the country to be modified, please submit a ticket, and we'll adjust it for you.

Do region restricted giveaways contribute to my SG level?

Yes, region restricted giveaways function the same as every other giveaway, and follow the same rules for calculating value.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask below!

Are there any rules for setting a region restriction on games that don't have a restriction?

I'm afraid it will be used as a new filter to block users from entering.
For instance someone in CIS only wants to give to other CIS members.

Is that really a problem when there are groups out there for regions/countries (and everything else, really) that people use for that purpose?

Great so now ROW region will have:

  • less GA
  • unbalanced cv

great

why less GA?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because:

  • Most of "restricted" users will post only "restricted" GA (they are cheaper so...)
  • They'll gain more CV (compared to ROW users)
  • They'll enter more high level ROW GA
  • ROW users have less chances to win

less GA to win or less created GA?
just to get your point correct, cause with unbalanced cv all is clear ^^

both.

Less to win for ROW users
Less ROW in general, why "restricted" should pay more when they have unbalanced prices on steam ?

ok, tho i've thought that giving away is just for giving away :)

That's not the point, the point is "rules are supposed to balance and should not allow abuses" (or at least that's my idea of rules)
That system doesn't look... fantastic... that's all...

I wouldn't be surprised if we see more ROW giveaways in the long term. We're going to see an increase in traffic from certain regions, such as South America and Russia, since they can now share more giveaways with their friends and communities. That increase in traffic will end up referring users from across the globe. For example, you'll have users in Russia posting a higher number of giveaways online. Users from ROW will stumble on those links, discover SG, and post giveaways.

I wish you'd made this announcement a few days ago. I would've bought Dadeadlic Armageddon Bundle for 90% off to giveaway. :(

Created a ticket to change my region. Currently set to France, although my Steam is running with Malaysian store.

Edit : Thanks, cg, for the quick fix! Sorry for bumping the ticket so often, I thought the bumping rule is the same as the trading section (1 hour). Anyway, all is fine now and cheers, love the new update! <3

Thank you! I hope this will cut down on the flood of region restricted giveaways I've seen... and those were only the ones that bother to mention region restrictions in the description! Both restricted games I won didn't even mention it.

I remember suggesting this in a discussion a while ago. I don't know if my suggestion was ever noticed by the powers that be, but it certainly is a welcome addition to the site. Now if only we could get rid of fake giveaways... (actually I think most are not intentionally fake, just created by people who don't know how the site works).

It was already under discussion while the site was in beta, but I'm sure cg had a look at the various suggestions too.

Giveaways are already hidden for other regions, and you're not going to see them on the homepage.

That's the answer I've been hunting for...I was kinda hoping we wouldn't see restricted GAs that we're unable to enter...maybe this will also help cut down on the number of GAs that pop up for games that aren't available here? Like Hotline Miami 2 :'(

Great news, although as others have said this could be exploited to get a higher CV. I'm actually in one of the regions that would benefit by it, but still think it wouldn't be entirely fair. The problem is there doesn't seem to be a good way to do it, one way could be to give CV according to the lowest price in the region, but this would not be fair for the other countries in the region that have a higher price. Well hopefully it won't be to much problem.

finally i can close my ticket ---> it´s already gone :-)
It´s really a nice feature for many users

btw I do not get the CV , balance , whatever discussion
there is already no balance, cause some people give to all, some only to small groups, and evil frogs gives only to smart people

Can support now also change wrongly made giveaways?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It will end faster than support reacts. I suggest raffle creator to delete it and create another one for that region.

Permalink

No. All region-restricted gifts created prior to this will still be handled like they always were, and any new giveaways created that are region-locked and the region isn't selected will be deleted.

Well, I think this will completly destroy the level system and SG will be overflown with ridicously cheap russian games being given away from people all over the world.

Yes, we will fall back into chaos, like we experienced last year and the previous years, before all those games became region-locked just before Christmas. Or maybe things will continue to be just fine, like they've always been when people from lower-priced regions could buy row games cheaper than the rest of us.

you're not taking it seriously but this change means people in the restricted regions can make bad rats and fortix giveaways again. we're doomed, i tell ya!

not all slavic countries. all Balkans Slavs, Poland, Słovakia, Czech, all are in Euro 2 price region what mean just regular worldwide prices, sometimes a bit lower.
that's mean also Hungary, Romania, rest of Balkans and Baltic States, they all may be taken as Slavic nations, but they are not.

generally you talk about countries lying on the east from Poland -> post Soviet states plus Caucas and central Asia.
http://www.steamgifts.com/regions/ru-cis
in fact on our CIS list only Russians, Belarusians and Ukrainians are Slavs. rest of them originally and mostly are Turkic peoples.

just wanted to mention this.

my pleasure to clarify that a lil bit. :) I fully understand that perception of the "Eastern Europe" or "Slavs" by rest of the world must be sketchy.
This is how we (for example in Europe) looking on the Eastern Asia - there are tons of different nations and ethnic groups there but most of us probably just say "japs, chinese and rest of them".
Same story with Middle East, all of them are know as "arabs". Well, not completely - greetings for Iranians and Kurds ;)

nvm, this is not geographic forum.
cheers!
