It's a good thing, but it's also open to abuse. I've been wary about this whole Kickstarter thing until now, because you're essentially paying for something that doesn't even exist yet. Normally I don't even pre-order stuff.
I have enough faith in this game to risk my money on it, but in most cases buying something before you even know if it's going to be any good doesn't sit well with me. If I didn't feel like I had a reason to trust the people involved I'd be too afraid I'd end up paying for a crappy game.
Still, you're right. Projects like this would normally be impossible for most teams without a big publisher breathing down their neck, and getting the fans involved directly is certainly a big step in the right direction. Especially when you think about all those developers that have been chewed up and spat out by their publisher.

To be fair, Minecraft started out as a small amateur game made by one guy, so it's not really comparable to a game made by a professional team of people who all need to get paid. It wasn't until Noch started charging money for the beta that he started to make enough money to hire some people and really start improving things. Minecraft is a bit of a layer cake, with a modest beginning which was, bit by bit, expanded and built upon until it became what it is today. Such an approach simply wouldn't work for most games.

While I'd prefer everyone to post their links before the end of the giveaways, I can understand why some people would rather keep their profile private.
In fact, I'm going to add a new rule for those people.

well itd be easier if you sent a pm to the ones who donate just sayin

What percentage of the 96 thousand members of SG do you think put money into the Kickstarter?
1% is still a thousand people. How is he supposed to manage verifying profiles and matching account names for those thousand people and then email them all the private giveaway link? Just seems unreasonable.
If the moderation staff decides these rules are not ok, then delete the giveaways and move on.

"This is a bit of an experimental giveaway, since I have no idea how many people here actually backed Wasteland 2. If the number of entries turns out to be depressingly low after a while, I might open up some of the giveaway to everyone."
HAHAHAHA now where the fuck is logic here?
Comment has been collapsed.
This.
Now, I know its your games to give away, but IMO if your going to make these Requirements, you should stick to it the whole time. If the entry amount is low, then its low. If you want lots of entry's, then make it open to everyone (Can still be private and posted on the forum). But this way, at least you may have gotten a bit of more money put toward the Kickstarter project.
Anyways, Thanks for the giveaway! Going to pass on this because I don't want to give money to the project (Never even heard of the game before) and have this turned out to be public in the end.

The logic is that there are five giveaways, and it wasn't my intention that all five would be won by one guy.
Still, now that there are plenty of entires (and even some valid ones), I suppose that line is no longer necessary.

I was planning on contributing to the wasteland project anyhow, so thank you for the giveaway ;-) I will be entering next week after donating.
Already got actually all of the games (except from majesty2), only my Fallout 3 is a retail copy so I'll take my chance for the GOTY edition :D

I donated 75$ to the project yesterday and i already own all of the games from your giveaways, but in any case this is a great thing youre doing

I doubt it'd reach 3000 people, since even public giveaways don't reach that amount very often.
At first I wanted the giveaways to run just as long as the Kickstarted drive (31 days from now), but I figured that would be excessive.

As this is an experiment, I will throw in my thoughts about it.
Requiring people to pay/donate to qualify for a giveaway is against the rules, and you say people are idiots if they donate so they can qualify for the giveaway. I don't know how pure your intentions are, but if you want to be clear of suspect, instead of "only people who donated before the end of the giveaways can win" you could've made it "only people who donated before the start of the giveaways can win". Then nobody could complain.

You totally missed the point here
"I´m not asking for donations, I´m giving thanks to the people who´ve made this possible. If I wanted to ask for donations I wouldn´t have waited until the goal had already been made. There´s a difference between asking for money and offering thanks for something people already did on their own"

Nah, I get the point, just saying that the way it's set up, it's inevitable that people will point him to the part of the rules that say asking for payment is not allowed. I then share my idea how that could've been avoided by stating that only donations made prior to the giveaway being setup would qualify for entry.
Edit: I probably should've started my first post with "I think it's great you're doing this, but...", then my point might've been more clear :)

However, the winner if they didn't donate won't actually win, so it defeats the purpose. So yea, it's still against the rules.

I understand your point, but I formulated the rule that way for the people who posted in this thread that they were planning on donating anyway but didn't have the money yet. I understand that this is a bit of a grey area in the eyes of some people, but I believe the asking for money bit is to prevent people from making a profit off of their giveaways. Otherwise, groups like the S.Gifts Giveaway Fund would be illegal as well. Since I don't make a single dime off of this it is, in my eyes at least, all right. If someone in charge should disagree I won't protest against it, but since this neither thread nor the giveaways themselves have been removed, I'm thinking they're ok with it.

I read SG rules and ...I entered all 5, and I won't donate.
Ask for deletion of those giveaways and create another, group limited, how hard is to make invite-only steamgroup, where you handpick who's in, so you won't break any site rules at all...

"Hello. I'm an internet tough guy and you can all suck my dick."
This is why we cannot have nice things.

No, it's not. He's offering gifts only to those who've ALREADY backed the project. He's not asking anyone to donate. This is like "only folks who have already given away a game may win," as opposed to "go make a giveaway before entering this."

In retrospect I could've handled this better in several ways, including getting permission before even starting, but it was a bit of a spur of the moment thing and I'm glad I didn't break any rules at least.

Ya. This is pretty much the only thing we can do now, as it is pretty much at a standstill.
While I do like the idea of this, it is ruined by people like GargoyleBG, and others who ignore/don't read the rules of the Giveaway.
I think the "Do not ask for any sort of payment/exchange in order to enter a giveaway. This applies to group rules as well." rule more or less apply's to forcing people to give money to the giveaway creator, their family, or their friends. At least, IMO It should be if it isn't.

Thanks for doing this, I have never played Wasteland before, but what I've read about it, and the concept discussed in the video amazes me, I backed it as soon as I've finished researching about it.
My Kickstarter account is under my real name, so I don't want to post it in public, if I do win, I'm happy to link you to it privately. For now, I'll just link a screenshot with my name covered :) http://i.minus.com/iplxww7Yq2Bzo.PNG

I entered giveaways even before I've read the main post.
Most people will stop at this point and move along
But then I have came back here, readed what needed to be read and since I did not support the project, I withdrawn my entries in giveaways.
I love the project tho, probably will put few bucks in it if my paypal will let me. Original Wasteland is older than me tho so haven't played it, but I love this type of games and W2 sounds promising. So thanks for the tip!

Cool, thank you! Will try to win a fallout and backed up Wasteland 2!

All right, two reasons to give this thread a little bump.
First is that Wasteland 2 made the 1.5 million dollars goal, which means there will be Mac and Linux versions. Hooray!
Second is that there's one week left on the giveaways. At this point I wish I set the timer to one week to begin with because two weeks is a stupid long time, but whatever. More chance to join for people who missed it, I suppose.

Damn, I wish I could donate to the Kickstarter. Not because I want to enter the giveaway( if I had money, I would buy my own NV :D), but because I really want to support the game that inspired Fallout. But since they met their goal, I will be able to buy it when it comes out, woo hoo. Its just a shame they might not make the boxed copy available to everyone.

Thank you based loko! Also Cult!
As most of you will probably be aware, the Kickstarter for Wasteland 2 has been fully funded by now. I don't know about you guys, but I'm psyched as all hell about this. So, to celebrate the sequel to a classic game, I decided to give away some of the games that were inspired by the classic Wasteland game. I'm talking of course about the Fallout series. I also threw in Majesty 2 and Orcs Must Die because they're fun and cheap so hey why the fuck not?
Anyway, since the project was made possible because of Kickstarter, I decided against simply giving away these games. I want to thank everyone who contributed to making Wasteland 2 a reality. To do that, I will only allow people who are backing the Wasteland Kickstarter to win these giveaways. So when entering any of these giveaways, post a link to your Kickstarter account in the comments to show that you have backed Wasteland 2. If your Kickstart account has a different name than your SteamGifts account, please put your SteamGifts name somewhere in your Kickstarter biography field, to prevent people from simply posting someone else's profile. Here's my own profile, in case anyone was wondering (spoiler: no one cares).
[EDIT] If you would rather not post your Kickstarter profile where everyone can see it, you can choose to keep it private for now. If you win, I will contact you on Steam so you can show me your profile in private. However, in this case I'm going to have to add a hard rule that only people who donated before the end of the giveaways can win, to keep people from trying to cheat the system. [/EDIT]
I don't care how much anyone contributed or anything like that. $1 is as good as $10.000 to me. All I want to do is thank the people who contributed to a game I care about, no matter how big that contribution was. Also, if you want to join in but haven't contributed to Wasteland 2 yet, it's still possible! The goal has been met, but all funds above the minimum will be spent on making the game bigger and better (and available on iOS and Linux), so there's no real upper limit here.
Anyway, on to the important links:

For the record, I am not in any way affiliated with inXile or Wasteland 2. I'm just a fan!
