Just watched this video from WhatCulture Gaming on YouTube and it got me wondering what SG's opinion on this is.

I need time to think on mine but I thought I'd post this now and see what happens.

Mass Effect 3.

2 is one of my favorite games of all time, and 3 has some incredible moments that were boosted thanks to some of the DLCs (yes, Citadel, I'm talking about you). Yet, three games that build up an incredible sci-fi story and it all comes down to a choose your destiny ending that has little to no payoff. Yes, the Extended Ending partially fixed it, yet I think it was a huge letdown.

I thought the entire game was a stepdown from ME2. Or even ME1. For all it's endless jank at least ME1 had some magic atmosphere. Anyway the ending was so so bad it dominated the discussion where I believe people gaslit themselfs into thinking ME3 was amazing before the last 5minutes. I was cringing/baffled way before the ending arrived(KAI LENG anyone?)

Fallout 3 is one that comes to mind.

The whole main quest is just you being a glorified camera man for your Dad and the Brotherhood. And when you're presented your choice for the ending your options are either Die a Hero or Be a Coward. No depth or nuance. Made worse of course thanks to the game acknowledging Charon and Fawkes are your most logical options but just flat out saying 'No'. Couple that with Sarah Lyons suddenly not volunteering herself in harms way for the first time in the entire game. Genuinely one of the most bafflingly awful endings I've experienced in media. Then Broken Steel came along and let you choose your radiation immune companions and the game still complains that the 'true' hero stepped up, rather than, y'know, I just ordered my ghoul slave to push the button because it mades sense, but yeah Todd, Charon is the true hero of Fallout 3 confirmed.

After months playing this epic dungeon crawl, you get this ending for Eye of the Beholder (DOS).

Ooohhh. I have an RL friend that might disagree with that one. He LOVES that trilogy. Had them on disk too.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I loved the games, played this one with a friend back in the 90s, still have the maps we drew on square paper. And I understand the AMIGA version had a proper ending, with an animated cutscene. But this one... 2 paragraphs of text, and the game unceremoniously dumps you to the DOS prompt? Sheesh! Ask your friend, I am sure he will agree! :D

I remember Phantasy Star II's ending being absolutely atrocious (and it didn't help that I hated the teleport-fest the game was either).

It probably can't get much worse than bad fighting games. But Chris's ending in RE6, when you fight a sea monster and his partner starts shooting lightning from his mutated arm, was pretty lame.

When the credits screen rolled I just sat in front of the TV wondering what the hell happened and why is the game over. Still, a decent game, especially from the technical side, story was lacking, but the ending was definitely a huge let down

A lot of people would probably disagree with me but: Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons... A miserable depressing ending to a miserable depressing game. <.<

Is your cutoff before or after the credits? Because if it's after, I'm STILL kinda mad about Xenoblade Chronicles X. I liked that game, it seemed decent, and then the post-credits scenes tried to do some crappy oooweeeooo SomEtHinG AboUt ThIs pLaNet~ nonsense that undercut the ENTIRE REST OF THE GAME AND STORY YOU WERE WORKING THROUGH. Ugh. It's not a perfect wrap-up, but it was definitely better before those final scenes...

Shadow of Mordor.
Whole ending was about my team vs enemy team. I just sit and look at my group totaly destroy enemies.. and then, last boss, where I just need to push some buttons to defeat him. And I just WHAT?? I deleted game after that.

I really enjoyed Life is Strange (the first one), but the ending reduced the game to a binary, last-second choice, with crappy consequences either way. Probably not the worst ending ever, but something that came to mind quickly.

Recently I've been playing a bunch of HOGs and there's a few that completely drop the ball at the end by having very anticlimactic conclusions, so I'm tempted to use one of those but it doesn't feel right. Similarly I'm still kinda pissed at the ending of Saints Row 4 because it felt like a middle finger to the stakes built up during the plot of the game itself, and I continue to think to this day that the final boss from Sonic Generations is a stain in an otherwise amazing game. But if I have to pick one that truly fucks it up at the last minute that has to be the roided up Joker from the ending of Batman Arkham Asylum, the fight itself is a buggy shitshow, but the thing that pisses me off is that it doesn't fit with the plot at all, the game should have ended a few minutes earlier instead of dragging it for no reason.

A massive cliffhanger, when no Episode 2/Part 2 of the game get released anymore.

Spellforce 1 : i totally loved the game but that ending made me feel like the whole story was pointless.
still life 1: pretty good adventure game that revolves around uncovering a serial killer. without ruining the ending let's just say it made me feel i wasted all my time playing this game and i should have played the sequel directly. not sure who thought of this ending like that but he needs to get fired!

Cyberpunk 2077. I loved the game despite it's myriad bugs and balancing issues, but I did maybe three or four endings and they were all depressingly awful (I might have missed the "good" ending I suppose)
They're teasing a possible new ending with the upcoming expansion, so there's hope of a "good" ending but I'm not confident ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
