Technically it used a modified Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 ruleset. This is common for classic Bioware. All their games used a Dungeons and Dragons ruleset of some description.

Dragon Age origins, baldur's gate, neverwinter nights 1 & 2. Good ones. And even though it's quite different, Fallout 1 & 2. Amazing games in any right.

Any great rpg could fit that description, but I didn't find kotor to involve too much strategy. I'll just list some classic rpgs and you can look them up and see if they are what you want. Fallout 1 & 2, Baldur's Gate, NWN 1/2, Dragon Age series, Jade Empire, Diablo Series, Divinity Series, and Planescape Torment. See if any of those are cool.

I've played Mass Effect, but I was looking for something with combat more similar to KOTOR. How is Dragon Age in that comparison? Are there any other RPG's that are similar, e.g. less action oriented and a bit more strategic.
