Steam summer sale?

Hey, I'm new on steam (well, have that account some years, but I'm visiting steam regularly since some months).
I have noticed that everyone is excited recently about STEAM SUMMER SALE.
My question is what is it? How does it look like? What can I win/buy/get whatever during it? Why does it last so long, etc..
And what are those 'mysterious badges' how can I get them and what can I do with them? Why didn't I get even one, while everybody is talking that it just appeared in their inventory(why, for what?).

Thanks in advance for replies, I just want to know as much as possible about it.

It is the return of the messiah, Gaben. You can buy with your money you so carefully saved up worthless games you will backlog and never play. It lasts eleven days, not THAT long. Mysterious badges will probably receive an actual identity when the sale actually starts. Crafting normal badges = one mysterious card. Ten mysterious cards = one mysterious badge.

i believe there are games which are more expensive, if you wait til the last day of the sale. i am pretty sure i saw some games for like -75%, and then only -66% on the last day.
