Pi is Greek and the Ides of March is Roman. I find the Romans to be the more interesting of the two, so I'll go with Ides.

The date represented as it is above coincides with the first three digits of Pi (3.14159...). The first image below is a picture of Larry Shaw who organized the very first Pi day (with a bunch of pie around him).
15th of March - Ides of March
In short, Julius Caesar's death day. The second image below is a painting by Vincenzo Camuccini titled "The Death of Caesar", not to be confused with the third image below which is also the Death of Caesar.
