inadvertently bumped before replying to you - i prefer the convenience of google music cuz i commute a lot and can search for and start playing nearly everything, without having to upload/match my own tracks at my pc

Yeah, I own quite a bit of music, and a lot of it isn't on Google or iTunes or anywhere online, so having my own library is important to me. I do use Apple's radio stations, included ad-free with Match, when I want something different, and Genius playlists if I want to listen to a mix of my own music quickly.
It isn't the same as what it sounds like you're looking for, so here's for variety and competition! Apple now has a similar service to Google Play called Apple Music, which I don't feel is worth the price for my needs at $15/month for a family subscription, or about $13/month more than what I'm paying now, just for the ability to listen to "most" songs from the iTunes catalog directly even if I don't own them.

yea I've considered quite a few different services and after three month long trial of Google music i stuck with it - unfortunately to take advantage of apple music you'd need them to support non apple products - google music web player is ideal for me for this, since i can juat stream it from a browser at work without killing my own data

by the way, on an unrelated note - if your collection is under 50k songs, you could upload it all to Google music and download/stream it back from there on any device with google account for free - you don't need to be a subscriber for that. Filesize doesnt matter - they just keep the count (Ive used that to get around the count requirement by merging multiple albums into one massive song and creating my own one hour+ long mixes. Might save you $25 per year :3 (it does the higher quality matching too)

oh and genius mix equivalent is the instant mix where you can instant mix off a playlist, mood, song, album, artist, etc. The one thing is that it won't give you ad free radio - my music app or nonadblock browsers play only one ad at launch and no more ads for the entire duration even if you quit your app - but i didn't find that intrusive at all, plus on my home pc with adblock i never saw a trace of ads. The only reason i subscribed is so i could instantly download something for offline listening in the subway

I've looked at it, but we have a lot of Apple devices (don't judge :P) and for $25/year it's pretty simple for my whole family to get to all of our music, and ad-free radio. I'm not 100% satisfied with what I have, but it's not worth the hassle to change to something that isn't clearly better for our use cases. Since Apple seems to have chosen to put their eggs in the Apple Music basket, which I don't like at this point, I'm starting to look again, but not too seriously yet.

hahah to each their own - we all have Android phones, my devices are a mix - android phone and tablet, a macbook, an ubuntu laptop and a win desktop lol so the web player is very handy

I have an unlimited monthly subscription ($9 per month) which I cancel and reopen every now and then; and was thinking of purchasing a family membership and sharing with whoever already uses it/wants to use it. Would be nice to share the cost (especially since it gives you 6 separate accounts) - finding 5 other people and paying under $3 instead of $10 per month.
Now I'm not sure when this plan is going live (I thought it had gone live already, but apparently not yet), but I just wanted to see if there's anyone out there who would like to share the plan with me - we could evenly split the payment - I could let google bill me for the entire amount if you have high enough rep and just get a google play gift card in return.
