So my first time streaming my game play I have been using Xsplit and Twitch.tv, got everything set up correctly but It seems Xsplit takes up allot of resources taking up to 40% of my CPU while playing a game which makes it very laggy.

Can anyone recommend a less CPU intensive program for desktop streaming other then Xsplit? or any tips on how to reduce the strain on my computer?

Streaming is basically 80% CPU, 10% upload and 10% VRAM. If you want to stream on twitch.tv, you have to deal with it, that XSplit is the most CPU-intense program to stream with, but also the best. You can try FFSplit (http://www.ffsplit.com/), but this program is in hardly beta, or FMLE (http://www.adobe.com/products/flash-media-encoder.html), but this requires some experience in streaming, to set up everything correctly.

Anyways, the high CPU usage while you're streaming, is perfectly normal, there is nothing to do about it :)

Honestly Xsplit is the best out there and the most convenient, I didn't really like FMLE, however FFSplit has a lot of potential, but right now it's still in early stages of development.

Well I tried them all, but they are either laggy or buggy, just gonna stick with xsplit but upgrade my PC from an e8400, 4gb ram to an i5 2500k and 8gb ram. Hopefully that will do the trick.

I don't like Xsplit because, unless you pay, you get low quality sound and a low framerate. I use the Livestream Procaster and, so far it's done a great job. The Stream's quality is acceptable, the sound's great and the framerate is at 30 fps. all of that for free!

You have to select NO CAMERA on the Procaster because, I have a friend who had issues because Xsplit showed up in the procaster and that was the default option.

Also, you can save your recording for later upload/view and that WILL have a great quality.

This should show you the Procaster's quality. Skip past the 30 minute mark since that's when the fun begins, before that it's just the title screen looping over and over :P.
