I clear space using WinDirStat (it might look old but it works better and has nicer visualizations than anything else I've found) and steamcleaner

I personally use TreeSize Free over WinDirStat, but they're both good programs. Also just be aware of the main limitation of steamcleaner:
`Steam will automatically download games's redistributable packages again in two cases:
There are more advanced options available (such as keeping one of each redist file in a cache somewhere and hardlinking them back to each folder), or simply deleting and reinstalling games as you play them.

I know how you feel. I have a crazy sized library and only 400Gb on my games drive. I think I need to buy a new laptop ...

simple solution...
1) buy dark souls (doesn't matter if you already own it... buy it again)
2) install dark souls
3) never play another game ever...
this was successful for me

Heh. Finished it for the first time yesterday. Was tempted to keep playing New Game+ but have other games to play too. :D

you miss the best part then... the NG+ content is where it gets challenging because you can no longer tank bosses and you have to rely on actually dodging and parrying. at about NG4+ you must be pro-dodger extraordinaire as bosses can 1-hit you with specific attacks... I got tired of NG6+ so now im doing challenge run throughs (earlier today i completed a no melee run of every boss and i am now currently working on setting up a run being crystal-weapons only on a NG+ character, if i run out of weapons than that is gonna suck XD)

Unless you defragment frequently and keep atleast 10% free space, it DOES put some strain on the hdd.Lots of files means lots of moving trough millions of data to get you what you need, means keeping the buffer almost always full and it even puts more strain on your cpu as well.

It does slow down performance on a HDD drive as the way they read/write information is on sectors of a magnetic disc (which is why you never rub magnets over hard-drives as it moves the disc out of alignment). however, on a solid-state drive (SSD), the use of flash-BUS storage systems (similar to how it is stored on a USB thumb-drive but smaller and more connections to increase bandwidth capabilities), files are searched for through a non-physical device (e,g, through small I/O switch mechanisms), meaning the performance will not be affected depending on how close to maximum capacity you are at.
This also explains why you are unable to setup RAID-1 and RAID-0 drives using Hard Disc Drives as they do not feature the switch mechanism to quickly move data between the two hard drives

I have two harddisks, one for windows and programs and the second for games and stuff like movies or other things.
A rule a thumb I use is not keeping anything on the hard disk that can be downloaded in less than 2 hours, or that I don't see myself using in the next months.

160 Go HDD, it happens to me all the time. That way i'm forced to concentrate on a game instead of starting too many concurrently.

Classic! I always tell my friends, no matter how good your PC is, the first thing you will be missing won't be performance but disk space :)
I myself solved this by having almost 5 TB of space spread over 4 HDDs. Since then, I always have some space free ( I love collecting movies :D ).

Yeah well I have a 300gb HDD and I've 148GB left.

I just bought Van Helsing this morning cause I thought it looked kinda cool, attempting to install it and realize its 20 gigs. Say to myself "Not a big deal". Realize I have 25 gigs left on my HDD. mfw.jpg
Has this happened to anyone else, How do you cope with limited HDD space, I wish I could download all the things.
