Not a football fan, maybe I'll see some carnival parade though :D

While it's grammatically correct to create the word Donaudampfschifffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft there never was such an company... it's just that German is a language that allows sticking words together to get new words... And while there were laws called Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz and Grundstücksverkehrsgenehmigungszuständigkeitsübertragungsverordnung it's not like we talk like that all the time ;)
On a sidenote: Allowing the sticking together of words seems to be the source for the "eskimos have 1000 words for snow" claim, which is wrong, but their languages allow the creation of composite words... like saying "stickysnow" instead of "sticky snow"

(In Michael Caine's voice) Not many people know that!
Good to know, details like these have always fascinated me.
I tried studying German when I was a teenager, but gave up and learnt Spanish instead.
Maybe I'll pick it up again (although the current plan is to learn French). Might be useful if they keep sending me on these trips.

Just as a sidenote, you could also call a Krankenwagen "Ambulanz" in German, so it would fit right in the list posted by Schnapser.

The Bahn travels all night long at least here in Hamburg but I guess also in Munich xD
Comment has been collapsed.
I hope it does, and I hope I'll manage to buy the correct ticket despite not speaking a word of German :D

as "EinAnderer" stated there is always public transportation so have fun and enjoy your trip!

Here in the west of Germany all ticket machines are multi language and usually explain which ticket takes you were. I guess the south should be similar... I vaguely recall Munich being a bit weird with their ringzones around the center, but it should work out.

Except the DeutscheBahn. You shouldn't expect anything from them - besides delays.
And our politics currently... eh....
If you can understand a little of german I have a nice song about the "DeutscheBahn" for you: Wise Guys - Deutsche Bahn

and if you have questions: almost everyone here in germany is pretty fluent in english ar at least can give simple directions.
So you shouldn't have any troubles. Don't worry, we only bite when you take away our beer :D

Take a trip with the "fähre" it will take ya through 1 side of the harbour to the other and u can take a good look of plenty highlights, also there u can buy beer and chill on the upper deck ;) hope the weather is nice for ya xD
also visit some highlight near the harbour like the new opera house "Elphi", the "Michel" or go into city and have fun shopping!
Take a look to our "Rathaus" its made of sandstone from the Renaissance and looks awesome!
after that go to the "alter elbtunnel" its a old one they just restored the whole think., its from the "Kaiser" and well thats also a highlight for itself. On the other side is a nice lookout and a really good burgercar xD
YOu can also visit the "Speicherstdt" there are the so called "miniaturwelten", "madame tussauds" and "the hamburg dungeon" as some attraction. or you just slend through the speicherstadt itself and eat at "dinnersdark" where u cant c anything xD thats fun. blind waitress will guide ya :)
In the end, best you go to the "reeperbahn" with some friends and check the clubs, (not those with those "girls" u know what I mean XD)
but be sure to go through the "herbertstrasse", but dont get to close to those girls there, they cost ya money dude xD
and after your party night you visit the "harbour site", and take a look the "fischmarkt", it opens at night, there are plenty of merchants selling all kind of stuff (most likely fish xD, but u cant get any more fresh than there) its setup as a highlight you will like it.
google for those words and you can find some infos about, also many inhabitants will surely be helpfull to get ya to those locations I guess :) have fun, but kleep in mind also here we got some troublemakers, be careful, but I grow up here and for myself I only encountered 1 situiation with trouble, in my yoounger days xD

I added all those places to my checklist. Info on herbertstrasse much appreciated, i am always kind of shy to ask around about it :P I will be there for quite some time, delegation from my work. Love the fresh fishes, they will add a nice diversity to my food :) Thanks for warning about troublemakers, I'm from poor side of big city, so i know what to look for and what to avoid.

They're supposed to have full audio and interface in German as well as English.
I can tell you the English version of Blade of Destiny is atrocious, but I am sure the German one is better ;)

The Gothic series I think is supposed to have German voice acting, although its Steam store page does not show that.
As with Blade of Destiny, I've played the English version and I found it absolutely horrifying. The "actors" had no idea what they were dubbing, it all sounded like a cheap spaghetti-western film.
I've been told the German version is really good though.

Gothic is made from a german studio ... so yes they have german voice acting too :o)

From what I could tell after visiting their website the mainlines U 1-4 are 24/7 (though in the night in 30m intervals) and their S-Bahn lines got a gap from 2 A.M. to 4 A.M.
Other than that there are also night lines of the busses.
If you know adresses of where you depart, where you want to go to and at what time, you could use this tool of theirs. Which even creates pdfs for you in case you need a map for your walk to the stations. :)

You're welcome, hope you don't get lost and have a nice trip - even if it's just for business.^^

Indeed ... these apps may help. Similar worked for me in Sweden and Denmark ^^

I think you will be fine, most Germans learned English in school, and especially in big cities such as Munich people are used to having tourists around and thus should be able to communicate with you fine.

Thank you pal and have a nice trip. Germany girls seems a quite interesting to me.

as i am from munich some tipps for you
use the airport day ticket - price is 13 euros and you can use it till 6 in the morning of the next day on each train (including s-bahn and subway)
you dont have to stamp the ticket after yxou bought it and its valid till 6 in the morning after your purchase
if you need some supplies like food from a supermarket - buy them at the airport or at the central station as all supermarkets close at 8pm
if you have any questions - feel free to ask!

Awesome advice man, cheers for that.
I'll go for the day ticket and take the S-Bahn from the airport.
Luckily our offices have a coffe bar and a restaurant inside, so I should have food and tea in abudance. But if I can spare some time, I'll definitely find a supermarket and stuff some German delicacies in my luggage ;)

You could use different words in germany for this.
For example: Boiler; Durchlauferhitzer, Heißwasserbereiter, Warmwasserbereiter, Warmwasserspeicher, Gastherme

I am not implying that you are the kind of person that would want to do such a thing, but if you are thinking that a trip to Germany isn't really complete without a public Hitler salute - just don't. You can get a hefty fine for that or even get arrested...
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, that's something I wouldn't do anywhere in the world, ever 😆
Interesting fact though, I didn't know that.
In fact, you might have seen this film. It was half film and half documentary; at some point they drove the fake Hitler around the streets of Berlin, filming the reaction of the people, and I vaguely remember that some did the salute.

Heh I am going to Germany on Sunday as well, but to the opposite side of the country. Getting around Munich with just English isnt too bad, I have been a couple of years ago.
Best of luck! :)

Hello, merry lads and lasses.
This Sunday I'll take the midnight plane to Munich, and I've never been to Germany before so it's going to be interesting.
But first of all,
⇨⇨⇨ GIVEAWAY 1 ⇐⇐⇐
⇨⇨⇨ GIVEAWAY 2 ⇐⇐⇐
Now, it will be a business trip so I won't be seeing any local amenities I am afraid :(
Plus I will be there very late and I don't know if the S-Bahn travels that late in the night, or if I should take a taxi which will possibly take an hour to get there and cost an arm and a leg.
And if that wasn't enough all the German I know is "Ich spreche kein Deutsch", which is going to be very helpful.
So, wish me luck 🙌🙏
