i am honestly not a huge fan of bitdefender. my personal favorite got eaten by Norton those poor poor souls... it was PCTools spyware doctor + anti, and it was pretty beast (not that i ever really needed it for more than strange colored cookies ;) )
it also came with a registry fixer called Registry Mechanic and that was a monster of an awesome program, i used it almost every other day just to keep everything in tip top. now i use bitdefender and it saddens me almost every day i launch my computer... but i payed for it because everyone said its a beast. and because the registry cleaner that came with bitdefender is such a pile of rotting trash i got CCleaner, i recommend that guy too, and that ones FREE. as far as other antivirus/malware programs go, im not sure i was a pctools faithful for somewhere around 5 years... and most antivirus programs murder your computer and do almost nothing... soooo im actually going to watch these polls and see what everyone says here.

Erm.. so you preach the philosophy that only retards, IE people that click and download everything in sight, or those that visit crazy porn sites etc get viruses. This, by connection implies that those who only download "trusted" files and dont watch porn, can never get a virus.
Hate to break it to ya, but you are incorrect. True, those that download everything get a shit ton of viruses, but even those that dont and practice common sense can get drive by downloads do to a hacked server. Anti-virus is a must if you visit more then 4 sites.

I personally like Avast Antivirus best (both the free and paid versions are very nice) but there are some other good ones. Kaspersky, Norton and McAfee are all OK, too. AVG is nice but I've found that it tends to clog up some system files which I don't understand for the life of me. Here's a link to Avast if you're interested: http://www.avast.com/en-us/index

I personally prefer AIO security suits and I use Norton 360 since it also has a firewall and a tuneup component.
As a free solution I always recommend MS Security Essentials and from my own experience (and I do have some years as a pro) I never encounter any problems with it.
However the best solution to avoid threats is to use your brain

How is NOD32 not the best AntiVirus?
It's fully customisable to the highest drgree and has daily virus database updates without annoying fucking popups but an unobtrusive 3 second window that doesn't tab you out of your game. Anyone who isn't technologically retarded can use NOD32 to full capacity. It's expensive though but I ain't no poor fucker.
Edit: Oh wait it's 93β¬ for 3 years on one computer. It's cheap, too.

The ability to customize, um, something and (almost) absence of pop-ups are not what make an antivirus good.

Pls, ESET is known for not letting viruses through. The only piece of malware I ever had was adware and even that was an unlicensed Chrome extension I myself installed that then got updated to becoming adware because the creator became a greedy faggot and turned it into nothing but adware that opens a Chinese shopping website every time I opened Chrome.

I have used and personally tested on virtual box most AV out there, BitDefender and Kaspersky are by far my most prefered. Have not tried ESET right but have heard good things. Norton is the EA of the anti virus world and needs to be avoided like the plague, just because its on TV and on every single computer you buy at a store does NOT mean its any good. I would go without an AV before I ever let anything norton install.
Get BitDefender or Kaspersky the paid versions are of course better but the free ones are not bad either.

IMO, the best free antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials. I've used Avast and Trend in the past. It is important not to have more than one antivirus software running at the same time. They end up conflicting with each other, and it's just not a good thing.
