Hi, I'm new to this site (despite signing up 5 months ago, didn't know I had an account) and I've submitted 2 giveaways and it seems someone was concerned that the giveaway was fake.

I'm unsure if this is suggested before (new to the site...) and I can't find anything, but why not use the users inventory to check if the gift already exists? Maybe add a "gift exists!" flag to the giveaway or something for user piece of mind? I'm sure there are users who submit giveaways without the game available yet and they're fine, but with the now official suppported option to purchase a gift for later some sort of flag for this existing makes sense. There is also of course the issue of someone using the gift before the giveaway ends, but the chances of that seem tiny.

checked the FAQ and didn't see anything.

Honestly, I don't see how there is a problem. There is a system in place that prevents people from making dozens of fake giveaways and points add up pretty quickly.

Besides, I see so little on this site that I am actually interested in I would rather use my points to make a bunch of invites and get new people on the site, so it may lead to more neat stuff being posted.

But with more people, more will do giveaways. Your chances of winning already aren't that great.

Your chances still decrease considering maybe 1 in 1000 new members will actually do giveaways.

The biggest problem is that very few users have their inventory viewable by the public. It's hidden by default, so a user has to explicitly change the settings in order for it to be viewable.
Few people ever change their Steam privacy settings, and many of those who do prefer to keep their inventory private.

So any flag denoting that the game is in the users inventory depends on the inventory being publically accessible, which it seldom is so such an addition while beneficial in theory would very seldom ever show up.

I thought you couldnt even join unless your profile is public. They need to enumerate if you have $50 worth of stuff in your account

It only needs to be public temporarily in order for in to check your account for validity, and once a week when it resyncs the games you have and your wishlist.

I have my account set as visible only to logged in users, and my inventory as private. It prompts me weekly when it needs to resync to temporarily make it public. Aside from that I can leave it as I wish, including making it entirely private if I preferred.

Most fake giveaways are for the big AAA titles (to get points, I assume). Why not add points after the giveaway ends and the game given/received.

The gifter does not receive points.

Some of the big gifters hide their inventories because people constantly look.

If I was one of the big gifters I'd keep my inventory always full and open for public view.

I don't think it's really necessary.
Want to prove your giveaway is legit? Take a screenshot of your inventory and put it on the giveaway description.
Done.

Hey, criticsquid. Anything that requires SteamGifts to force members to keep their inventory or profiles public will not be an option. When a giveaway is flagged, we'll ask a user to present evidence in some form, but it's entirely up to them how they want to handle it.
