550w is enough for your build, but personally I wouldn't pick vs series
Comment has been collapsed.
because there are better choices on that price range, corsair has nice stuff on higher tier, but I don't like the vs series.
where are you buying ? any xfx, antec, seasonic on the same price range/W ?

More than enough power without doubt, but if you are the one paying the electricity bill, then there are better choices.

It will supply as much power as needed. The specs if I am not mistaken say "up to 85% efficiency", which means it's an 80 Bronze Plus.
This means if 100W are needed, it will supply 100W, but in order to do that it will need to consume about 120W.
The "extra" 20W are mostly lost in heat.
In any case, all power supplies tend to have the best efficiency at 50%+ load, so from that point of view I guess it also doesn't make sense to have an "overkill" PSU.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ah yes, sorry :D
Yeah, you are also right that it's a common misunderstanding: a lot of people think a 550W PSU will always consume 550W.

Totally true!

I would recommend EVGA 500w Bronze over the Corsair.

An i3? With that GPU?!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!!
Your GPU is stronger than your CPU. Go for the i7.
Comment has been collapsed.
Please don't give bad advice like telling someone to get an i7 when it would be overkill and a waste of money.
I could understand an i5, but an i7 would be too much for most users. (Unless he does a lot of stuff that does use hyperthreading)
Comment has been collapsed.
An i7 is NOT overkill. In fact it's better than an i5. I've been using an i7 in my pc since the first gen and I'm STILL using it with no problem.
The myth of an i7 being overkill has been debunked a long time ago.
It's better to go stronger than not.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're entitled to your opinion about your rig. (And yes, I got an i7 in my rig cause I needed the additional options it offered).
But realistically benchmarks show that the price/performance rate isn't that great in most countries/areas if you don't need stuff like hyperthreading. Then you're better of with an i5 in most budgets. (and/or putting leftover cash in a better GPU as newer game tend to lean heavily on the GPU)

Yup, i3 6100 and rx 470 is a bad combo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39XRrwMv6h4 To have a gaming pc capable of 1080p 60fps ultra nowadays you need at least an i7 6700K and a gtx 1080 sli. /s
Comment has been collapsed.
Like neokarasu said an i7 is a bit overkill, this build is for nothing more that 1080p 60 fps gaming.
Comment has been collapsed.
Witcher 3 being GPU limited on a GTX 970 with an ancient i3-2100 powering it.
The i3-6100 wouldn't bottleneck a GTX 1080 and most likely not a new Titan either. Heck, a much weaker AMD FX-6300 wouldn't bottleneck those GPUs.
Comment has been collapsed.
This has got to be the worst advice in the discussion.
Sure, it's possible to squeeze a bit more performance out of a RX 470 with a faster CPU (especially in some CPU heavy games, but not in all games), but going from an i3 6100 to an i7 6700K (most popular i3/i7 right now) costs almost €250 more, and for that money you could as well go from the RX470 to a GTX 1070, for a much higher average FPS boost in games compared to going from the i3 to the i7.
Check this article where they compare i3/i5/i7 in a few different games together with a cheaper and a more expensive GPU: 960/980. There's only one game where the i7+960 is faster than the i3+980, and that's Hitman Absolution:
http://www.techspot.com/review/972-intel-core-i3-vs-i5-vs-i7/page5.html
You'll also notice how going from the i3+960 to i3+980 gives a higher average FPS boost than going to i7+960.
The original poster has put together quite a good budget system, and anyone who knows anything about putting a system together would see that this is indeed a budget build, and then recommending switching to an i7 is just really bad advice, that money could be spent much better if there is a higher budget to play with.
In no way does someone suggesting a i3+470 combination deserve being laughed at with a total of 92 characters.

if it weren't for the dual core cpu i'd say its nice budget build ...
go at least for the i5 6400 costs ~60$ bucks more ... but it "has to be" quad-core for upcoming DX12/Vulcan/new AAA-Games
also consider going for 1 x 8gb ddr4 stick, probably a little less expensive + saves a DDR4 slot which you will never use
(difference in single vs dual channel ram is slim to none ... + chances of one ram stick "going bad" are the same)
if its very close (price range depending on your region) better go for a RX 480 with 4GB which is quite a bit better
PSU even with a RX480 ... 450W should be plenty > http://outervision.com/b/ZAq3KZ

Thanks for the advice here in Portugal there is a significant price diference between the rx 480 and 470, about the ram any recommendations?
Comment has been collapsed.
for gpu: go for this http://sapphirenitro.sapphiretech.com/de/470-8.html
this is nearly as fast as the 480 but cheaper and the best 470 you can get. also you get 8gb of vram and(!) the ram is faster than any other 470
Comment has been collapsed.
sure? r6s take 6.5gb ram in 1080p
rise of tomb raider 6gb in 1080p
if you have the vram most new games will use it.
It's not that games will lag with less ram but you can see differences in textureloading and stuff like that
Comment has been collapsed.
rainbow six siege.
i think there are even more games. i played doom on my r9 380 and it uses the whole ram (4gb) and it was fine. but that is a game from 2016. i think op would also like to play 2017 and maybe even 2018 games on high texture level
Comment has been collapsed.
i see then try to get an OC'd RX 470 that should be quite close to a stock RX 480
ram recommendations? hmm kingston is usually the cheapest and best
(reliable) crucial and corsair are my 2nd picks

Estou a ver nessas e também na chiptec, obrigado pelo conselho.

Listen to DominusFerrus. His advice is solid in what he just posted with regards to the cpu. Trade the i3 in for an i5.
Ram change, depends on which tends to be cheaper near you. Performance change is neglible.
PSU, the amount of watt is fine. Just switch out the series you're going for. Or switch brand. Personally I'd favor a XFX PSU but that's just cause I've had good experiences with them so far. Depends on your budget too..
Comment has been collapsed.
Gigabyte, MSI, Asus, ASROCk even biostar... All is fine. Biggest differences in the "low budget" (it's still a lot of money) is the software and some stuff. You can check for intel lan and maybe you can get a nice game with the mainboard (asus does things like that).

I would take another one. Corsair is not a manufacturer, some PSUs from corsair are made by XXX and other collection/theme/brand are made by YYY. They have good ones and bad ones.
Are you buying from USA? budget for the PSU? Maybe tier 1 is too much, but you could find a good tier 2/3
EDIT: Seagate barracuda is fine, but if you can find a WD for the same price mor or less, take it.
Drop the kingston V300. Very bad SSD. Pick another one from kingston or another brand. For medium budgets, Adata seems to be the best option.
That mobo seems to be the most used/recommended on reddit (im trying to build myself a thing too and I saw that a loot), however a b150 can be a good idea too. Depends on your budget and your needs

Buying in Portugal and just looking for a PSU that as good quality but not too expensive
Comment has been collapsed.
No, buying from local stores, hoping to haggle a little bit.
Comment has been collapsed.
just a tipp: buy gpu from amazon.
even if you pay some more €, if there is any problem (and even if it's just some noises out of the card) amazon will not ask and give you a new card. local stores can't do this mostly.
Comment has been collapsed.
True, but two things: even the cheapest Seasonic will be a lot more expensive than that Corsair VS (+50-100%).
And having a mid-grade PSU is only detrimental if your system is close to the edge of wearing it out. His build wouldn't reach 50% capacity at worst, so he could actually go even lower in quality and still have nothing to worry about for years apart from PSU fan failure. That Corsair is not bad, it is just made from second grade material. With such low demands, I would never worry about it.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's decent. An EVGA Bronze could be slightly better (still budget build, but they rebranded units manufactured by one of the lowest "recommended tier" companies), but that Corsair one would suit your needs. The only possible problem is that there is some possibility that it may die within 5 years (and a huge possibility that its fan will wear out in that time).
Comment has been collapsed.
Corsair VS is like the worst that Corsair ever made.

you clod even do 350w :V But the price isnt huge, just stay with the 550w

I may also add in the near future an Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB
That SSD is a pretty much a scam, don't support their shady practices by buying it. Honestly, I'm surprised they're still allowed to sell it!
More info here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7763/an-update-to-kingston-ssdnow-v300-a-switch-to-slower-micron-nand
Also, you said you'll be buying from local stores, may I ask you why? If it's because you're worried about shipping from online retailers, that's pretty much an urban myth, they're actually safe, provided you buy from reputable stores.
By shopping online, you also get a wider selection of components to choose from, and usually lower prices.
Amazon is probably the best (widely available) store to buy from, you can shop from every one of their European sites without issues (apart from possible language barriers), just be sure to select products with the "Amazon Global" shipping.
You might even save enough money to be able to fit an i5 in your budget!
Comment has been collapsed.
Thanks for the advice, that was one of my concerns about stores like amazon.
Comment has been collapsed.
I too was concerned about buying online, but I found there's nothing to worry about.
I've got no issues so far, but should something bad happen, Amazon's customer service is regarded as one of the best ones.
My only gripe with them is that they don't accept Paypal payments, but that's eBay's fault, when they owned Paypal they forbid them to make agreements with their competitors. They're independent from each other now, so that will probably change in the future.

Hi, I would like to know if the Corsair VS-550W is good in terms of quality and if it will be enough for the following build.
CPU: i3 6100 3.7 Ghz;
GPU: XFX Radeon Rx 470 4GB;
Mobo: Gigabyte H110M-S2H;
Ram: 2x Kingstone HyperX Fury DDR4
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB (SATA III)
I may also add in the near future an Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB (2,5'' SATA III) and an extra case fan.
PS: This is my first build.
