I don't get what's so wrong about developers giving away greenlight (i.e. non-steam copies) and beta giveaways. The idea of the site is to giveaway games, specifically for Steam, yes, I understand. However, I think this site presents a great tool for developers to do giveaways on instead of something like Rafflecopter, and it would be a waste to not let developers to do such giveaways. So long as the betas are betas for games coming to steam or to be greenlighted I see no problem. If you don't like it, don't enter. It's not hurting you at all

What confuses me is why so many people are against it. I'm thinking that most are just anti-progressive in nature and have been accustomed to the "no beta giveaways" rule that in their mind that's just how things ought to be without exception. (Either that or people feel so entitled that they only deserve to be given free full games and none of this non full game nonsense.)

i agree 100% and find it confusing people bitch about stuff costing them nothing.
it is not like the developer wants to boost his contribution level or smth like that

Problem with this beta is that it only gives you a couple of days of access. It's like the devs are giving a limited-time instead of limited-area demo. At least that's how I see it - it's a demo, and giving away something that should be free anyways for advertising is the problem.

What's the fuss about? Don't like betas, don't enter them. I won GoI beta key, tried it and in conclusion I know now that this game is a piece of crap and I'll waste no money/points for full version/giveaways in the future - so in fact I have saved some points because I was interested in this specific title...

Its not a free game. Its a free beta that will only last for 7 days.

This is just a way to promote their game, If they really wanted to give to the community they would give free copies (Like Ravaged), Afterall they have UNLIMITED copies.

This is just a way to get free publicity without losing any money. Also, The rules state: NO BETAS. But devs seem to have immunity to certain rules.

Thats what's got people mad & Me a little bit actually, Theyre just using SG to promote their game when they could be really giving away the real thing.

i would guess the rule that no beta's are allowed is due to getting credit for a full game giveaway even when one just gave away a time limited game. Best option imho would be if SG would allow giveaways of betas but there would be no contributor value gained. (and of course a beta would have to be marked very visible even before clicking the details of a giveaway)

Why should the not allowed to promote their work?

My VAC ban is not your concern. And about Americans, it's a stereotype in Poland that Americans are stupid. I'm not thinking like that, but let's say, almost whole SG forum is a joke (not as a site, but as posts and topics) so, I've wrote something to stay on that way.

IF your not Smart Enoth to read BETA and Ignore the Awesome Games that you Can Get Beta Access to then, I feel sorry you dont know how to read. Also these Developer Beta Giveaways are cool lets you test the game before you buy it. And Beta testers for games always get some kind of extra.

The account used in handing out the Turba and Tryst giveaways does not enter giveaways anymore, though it might have been better if another account was used to handle those. Let us know if you see that user entering in giveaways and we'll discuss it with the rest of the support team.

Beta is also used for testing the game, lol.. Its not a marketing conspiricy imo but sure marketing is a part of the equasion.

What better place to "market betas" than steam gifts? Letting steam users test games is great and well steam does make up a big number in the digital distr.
Its not about "they took it away" its about they gave us to begin with, direct access in a development process to which many try and be a part of and more than happy to do so from a handfull of standpoints.
I dont agree with the sales of betas on steam threads etc, this just my personal o. I rather be the tester than the one who bought a game on "good faith" and ended up w/ shite.

More importantly these betas also serve as "live demos", although not fully polished they give the user an idea of how the game will be hence pay or save..

Beta serves more good than bad and tips the scale with the good and when contributing it should be because it comes from the heart, not for purpose of being on the leaderboard and the ones who did get bumped because of these betas well im sure they give from the heart and dont really mind for the most part and if they did, well let them speak for themselves my appologies if you are a top contributor and this is your thoughts but even if thats the case, maybe giving gifts should be less 'competetive" and more about the actual giving.

I dont care how the give them out, please keep steam users invloved any way possible in betas period.

Also the word shameful ( which i had ignored until the next post by EmoPanda had refreshed my memory ) is a very strong one and well if devs are giving us test drives b4 buying the product well if thats shameful then i can say that this is the best shameful exhibition i have ever seen.

Short history on betas.
At one point it was deemed having exclusive access thus many outraged gamers ( especialy if fans of the game being tested) thus the words "closed betas" being just as it sounds.
Devs have become more liberal over they years and well some may argue that the closed beta and open beta are 2 dif stages of dev process but the bottom line is that the line that seperates the 2 has become faded and access to either or more available and i have been around a long time, maybe too long but my thoughts are simple:
In a gaming gen which has been taking leaps backwards in many areas, exploiting day 1 dlcs, locked content on disc, trading innovation for simplification = quanity over quality and many more examples to which are rinsed and repeated this area ( beta ) is one that has made progress in terms of letting more users having access and well more beta participants in general and while living in a gen which made the beta users feel " special " and those without "less than' , beta has become a staple to which feeling equal and "together" in an industry that tends to devide.. Sure many devs do not follow the rinse and repeat above but the trend right now is sign with a blockbuster publisher for the big bucks ( we all know what happens then ) or stay true to your work and provide/dev games from the heart and soul even at the cost of a smaller paycheck.

example good beta = this

bad beta = publishers who give them as pre-order exclusives = this is the marketing which is a bit more "shameful" and devides gamers.

I never thought having a bunch of beta from devs would be shed in a bad light, well again im an old dog when beta was almost a privelage based on luck and well privelage,lol..

i dont pop up here much but do scan the threads and well obviously could not help myself / refrain.

I am just thankful for not only the opportunity to exp a product first hand/early , especially if i am thinking about buying the game, opens my eyes to games that i might have passed up and more importantly do my part as a gamer/beta tester and report bugs and glitches which has been a part of dev process for years but now its just more accesible for ALL .

The difference between "piracy" and "privateering" is just one piece of paper. While both pirates and privateers attack shipping for personal gain, privateers obtain a letter of marque from a sovereign nation, effectively making them part of the nation's military and thus able to legally attack the nation's enemies.

Well, I'm grateful for all legit giveaways, so I have no problem with beta giveaways. However, an issue worth discussing is perhaps a set of rules for developer giveaways. Seeing how they're featured prominently at the top, they get their fair share of publicity. I consider it a tad unfair for the more generous developers, who are going above and beyond, to share the space at a disadvantage with less deserving ones (for lack of a better term).

I wouldn't find it out of place to request the following of developers, for giveaways to be featured as "developer giveaways":

  • The giveaways should be for at least 50 copies

  • If beta/time limited, the game should be available to players for at least a month

  • The giveaway duration can't be longer than 1 day/50 copies, for a maximum of 2 weeks

I think that will make sure developers have access to some publicity and user feedback on this great site, but not at the expense of their more generous colleagues.
