I agree with the OP, giving away betas just messes up the stats of the system. And no, exploited keys aren't as bad, they were fixed and didn't add full/any value after some people were giving away 10 + copies at once.

I don't care about the stats. Some people will want to play these games that are being given away, even for a limited amount of time! It's free, So don't complain! Yes they should fix the stats system with it, but still! Don't like it? No one is forcing you to stay.

It's like a demo or a steam free weekend. They should be free anyways, so beta keys are not allowed on this site - especially since the devs are only doing this for advertising purposes.

With your reasoning, why can't individual users give betas? It's free right, so don't complain!

I don't have a problem. I didn't suggest the idea, I just commented as to why I partially agree with it. For example, real contributors lose their place in "Top Contributors This Week" spot and the site stats get messed up. Not that I personally care about it, just saying it's not quite right.

Actually, the Steamtrades forum rules do not forbid calling out users, only SG.
More importantly, though, just because you don't like a rule doesn't mean you're free to ignore it :/
And calling out a user for breaking a rule while breaking a rule yourself in the process is hypocrisy, plain and simple.

It's just a waste of points. Most games are unplayable and buggy.
Game beta tester is a good job, but this is not the right place for this.

Permalink

Do not enter them then. It is the right place, you can see by the number of entries that people are interested.

Permalink

On the other hand: some people enter every giveaway in sight and some people will try to trade or re-gift the game, even if it's a beta; either because they want to boost their contributor value, or because they figure they aren't that much interested in the game or maybe because of sheer stupidity.

I'm not saying that it's bad to make developer-beta-giveaways; I'm just saying that you can not conclude a huge real interest only because a lot of people are entering.

Its not the right place, The rules state: No betas.

The only people that can giveaway betas are devs, Thats just a double standard.

-

SG should have a "standard" on dev giveaways, So nobody uses it for just marketing (This is pretty much it)
TornBanner & Chivalry have been pretty dark during all its development, The forums went from being VERY active once the first dev trailers came out to not active at all. This beta giveaway is just a way of saying "Hey! Look at our game! We made a game! ...Guys, Try our game!"

If they really wanted to give to the community, They would giveaway the full game. Afterall, They got unlimited copies. They just wanna advertise for free. And SG is what theyre using (Among other things). USING.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The devs aren't entering giveaways, so what's the problem? The devs giving away stuff here are indie companies, who use their own money to fund their development, and therefore it's not ideal for them to give away free copies of their game. I don't see a problem with them giving away betas of the game as it is a lot better for them and they are able to fix issues that may arise in the game before the release, which in turn is better for the potential buyers. As for your comment that the beta only lasts 7 days, it lasts until the game is released and for GoI Online that's on the 29th of this month.

After reading all your posts, you really seem like a person, who thinks he's entitled to get free games from the developers. You should consider yourself lucky to even get beta versions of the games and get to try the game beforehand. Also, if you bothered to read the giveaway description you would see this: "And don't worry folks, come launch time we'll be giving away a bunch of retail copies as well, but that shouldn't stop you from taking advantage of our pre-order sale, netting you a 4 pack for as cheap as $8.75/copy (USD).".

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I can't believe how much things have changed. You used to be paid to beta test games but no more. At any rate, the Chivalry beta in particular only lasts for 7 days. As I've said above, I see this giveaway, especially because of its short playable duration, as a limited-time demo or free weekend. Steamgifts should not just be an advertising tool for indie devs.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You used to be paid for walking through the map and hitting every wall to determine all possible bugs, not actually playing the games. These betas are meant for actual playing and you are free to report any bug you encounter while playing. I don't see anything wrong with that and am actually happy that I got a chance to participate in Chivalry beta, since I liked Age of Chivalry a lot (at least I think that it's the same studio that made the mod, but even if it wasn't, I still like knights and stuff ;))

I don't mind developers giving away Betas on this site just like I like the greenlight-projects to support the game, but

  1. The betas add to the contributer value which is wrong
  2. You pay full price (points) for a game you can only test for a few weeks or even days (just like in the current case)
  3. The giveaway should not be called "Developer Giveaway" but "Developer Beta" to make clear it is nothing more than that - if a giveaway also includes the full game once it has been released it the only time I think it deserves the title "Developer Giveaway"

I think the rules are bent at present a bit too far but with a little bit of change I would buy into the concept of giving away developer betas on this site - maybe a sister-site for that kind of purpose should be made?

yes it does but I think there is a major difference between a full-game giveaway and a beta giveaway - therefore I would mark it differently and the price in points should be lower as people spent money on full games and give them away so the community earns the points in the first place.

I spent money on games to contribute to the community so that you and I receive the points. So yes you could put it that way - on the other hand everyone is free to do with their points what ever they wish.

I think the blow was taken out of my sails when I was told they do actually exist on Steam but are not yet visible, but I still think it would be a good idea to market the whole thing differently as it throws up the same questions over and over again and there is potential to put the developers of independent games in a much better and noble light with a few little tweaks - that way everybody wins!

Permalink

  1. Who cares? Devs don't enter giveaways.
  2. Who cares? You gain points by doing nothing at all.
  3. It's still a giveaway by the game developers.
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

  1. The people who contribute complete games are pushed down the list while they clearly add more value than a beta does - there is a reason Betas are not allowed on this site. For me that does not matter much but I have a sense of "right and wrong" and this is clearly "wrong".
  2. This is not correct - you gain points if someone submits a game for giveaway if those giveaways are exempt from this rule (and I guess developer giveaways are in general - correct me if I am wrong) it should not cost any points at all.
  3. You are right - but I think it should be separately marked as done with Greenlight - that way room for discussions like this is reduced. You could put clear rules about it on the FAQ.

I don't know about other people, but I am always happy if things are clearly explained or there are clear rules about it - with the increasing number of developer betas this is not the case and I feel uneasy about it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Betas are allowed, just not all betas. DotA 2 is allowed, and so was CS:GO while it was in beta, and you do/did earn contributor value by submitting either of those. And yes, you do gain points when someone submits a game, which means, as I said before, that you gain points by doing nothing at all.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But do you also receive points if a developer beta is posted? I guess not...

...I don't mind the points part too much as the same rule applies to everyone on this website, but I would really like to see a section in the FAQ outlining the exact rules of developer beta giveaways and marking them differently just like done with the Greenlight giveaways. And I wouldn't mind if the points you spend on them is a bit lower...

...but having said that I can understand that people who really would love to join the beta probably would like to have this changed back to an even higher value so that only people join which have an urge to try the game.
