Guys since we're on the topic, can anyone recommend me a recent/new-ish RPGs that have unique stories (e.g. not about saving the world) or with a more comedic slant? I know of Disco Elysium and I have already wishlisted it but I can't name another one.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm gonna check CrossCode and Don't Open the Doors (first time I've heard of this title). I've played Deathspank and Thongs of Virtue a long time ago, The Baconing however is new to me. I didn't know they made a third one. Might as well check it out too. Thanks again!

Not comedic, but, Alpha Protocol - it’s a spy RPG. Gameplay is mediocre, but it’s unique setting is worth playing

I have Alpha Protocol in my library for the longest time but never came around to actually playing it. I guess now's the right time for me to install it.

If you play as Michael Westen (selecting the funny/sarcastic/mcclane in the vents responses) the story is absolutely awesome.

Gameplay is mediocre, nowhere near as bad as reviews say.

I've played a lot of average/mediocre games over the years. Some of those to completion. If the gameplay isn't that good, at the very least make the story interesting or vice versa. I'm not a 'deep' gamer and I'm easily amused.

Aside from obvious stuff like The Witcher series or Tyranny, I can recommend Torment: Tides of Numenera (while it has its quirks, it's actually really good writing-wise), Unavowed (it's a classical point-and-click game with RPG elements), Ash of Gods (a rip-off of The Banner Saga when it comes to gameplay and visuals, sure, but with an original and pretty awesome story). But yes, the best thing you can do as of now is get Disco Elysium, it's Planescape:Torment level.

As for comedy, West of Loathing might be your choice, but I haven't really played it yet. Then again, Disco Elysium is hilarious from time to time.

Thanks for the recommendation! West of Loathing has been in my peripheral vision for quite some time now and I know I have a key for this somewhere. I have Unavowed via Game Pass and installing it right now. Yeah, Ash of Gods looks like a straight rip-off of Banner Saga and that kinda turned me off but if it has an awesome story, I guess I'll check it out.

Without a doubt the best storyline of videogame history is The Legacy of Kain.

Other games with a really good story/lore:

  • Future Wars: Adventures in time (Really old point and click adventure)
  • Hollow Knight
  • Bioshock Infinite
  • Planescape Torment
  • The Wolf Among Us
  • To The Moon

For me:

Deus Ex (original)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution DC
Hollow Knight
CrossCode
Dust: An Elysian Tail
Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light (both Redux versions)

Here are other games that I haven't played yet but heard from others which are actually pretty good:

Nier and the Drakengard games
Spec Ops: The Line
Transistor
Chrono Trigger
MAFIA games

Spec Ops: The Line

I think I'll second that. While gameplay isn't really impressive here, this modern adaptation of Conrad's "Heart of Darkess" is brilliant writing-wise.

Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX must be the most impactful stories I've ever experienced in gaming. Nothing else comes even close to these two.

Arcanum, Kotor1, Mass Effect1, Beyond Two Souls, CoJ: Gunslinger, ... Like, story is really important aspect of gaming to me, and if the story is not compelling, I might not even finish the game.
