Visit their profile, and on the left hand side, click on 'Trades'. There isn't a better way to search unfortunately :/.

its probably deliberate so for when people 'shoot themselves in the foot' then close the thread (which tends to happen a shit-load 'round here), they have a small chance of it being forgotten.

The nearest you could get is using Google with site:steamgifts.com/discussion/ + user name , but the outcome would still rather be flawed.

Not much you can do. You can copy their username and use control F to search each individual page of the discussions to see if you find one they created. If it is a closed thread you will have to go back to around page 331 and start searching there.
You can also search this website on google for their name and see if you can find what you are looking for. Like this:
