As you know SG GAs only support Steam key format and humblebundle.com gifts links. This is unfortunate if you have indiegala.com gift links, so what I have in mind is to do the following:

‎1. Include the indiegala gift link as the key, but with humblebundle.com gift link prefix, for example this: https://www.humblebundle.com/gift?key=034c5a473a0511e690b7493fdace829e

‎2. Add the following text to the GA:

"To the winner: Replace humblebundle.com/gift?key= with indiegala.com/game?game_id= to get your key.

Good luck!"

‎3. When the GA finishes, send the key though this site, without contacting the user to explain what they need to do (everyone reads GA descriptions, right?)

Will you help me if test if this work? Yes, the key above, for the game Cuties, is was unused as of posting this thread.

Edit: Taken by hannes.m31 the ninja. Thanks for the implicit confirmation!

Edit #2: If you manage your keys in Excel you can easily create the link for the GA, by using the following formula:

(this assume that B2 is the cell where the URL of the original indiegala.com gift link is)

Edit #3: Quick & dirty Tampermonkey script (based on the work of others) which adds the text above to GAs (pre-populating my preferred invite-only GA parameters) is here. No guarantee whatsoever of course.

Yes, apparently "hannes.m31" the ninja knows enough English to figure out how to get the key, but not enough to acknowledge he took the key or say thanks. Still, I got the confirmation that I needed.

It works, but only if the winner can read or if they understand what is being said :p

I just converted all my indiegala.com gift link to ones in this format. This is really easy if you manage your keys in Excel. You can create the link for the GA, by using the following formula:

(this assume that B2 is the cell where the URL of the original indiegala.com gift link is)

Heh, good point! It didn't occur to me, but some people will probably try to redeem it lol :-D

It could work, but given the sheer amount of people who don't give a f... about reading descriptions, it could lead to dire consequences...
It's better to add the winners on Steam, or sending them an e-mail, to give them the link.

But, why aren't Indie Gala gift links accepted? Is there some kind of complication within the system, or simply no one ever thought of that when designing it?

Yes, I'm a cutie!

What "dire consequences" exactly? Failing to activate and marking as Not Received? If they don't contact the GA creator in such cases and just mark as Not Received, it's their loss.

There're people who only care about winning, so if they can't get their game with one click, they could get butthurt.
There's also the chance of getting a winner who can't understand English, in that case communication would be difficult.
Extreme case, a winner might get the game, activate it, mark it as "not received", and get away with that because you didn't supply them with a supported gift link.

If they try to pull something like this I'll let Support make the final call. Activating a game and marking as Not Received is ground for permanent ban, so I wouldn't try it if I were the winner. See "Misuse of Giveaway Feedback" here.

Thinking about this some more, it's very unlikely that the winner will activate and still mark as Not Received, for the following reasons:

  1. The GA are filtered through SGTools, so only non rule breakers can apply. Good users are less likely to misues giveaway feedback.
  2. The email address of the person who redeemed the gift is visible.
  3. I can check before I send the key that the link is unused and if needed prove that it wasn't used.

Anyway, I already have a few active GAs that use this method, so we'll soon see how smoothly (or not) it goes.

If you're doing this with SGTools filtered giveaways, then you'll be fine!
My biggest doubt was about public giveaways, as those are fertile ground for bots and script users, who usually translate to rule breakers.

I also have a couple of flash public GAs with this method just to satisfy my curiosity, but I doubt I'll do it regularly.

That's a nice guide you put in the description, but I doubt many users will actually land there and read it.
Good luck with those!

Which key was duplicate? The one for Cuties? I can contact indiegala.com if they provided a bad key.

It won't work.

I made GAs for IG links, by adding ending of giftlink to key part, and writing on GA page "it's unique ending of IG gala giftlink, you have to add it after "x part" to make it work, so it will look like "part profided in GA description=part from won page".

And still 3 people added me on steam asking "what is this? it don't work". People don't read GAs descriptions, and noone can expet them to change this behaviour.

With how many it did work? If it's 3 out of 20, it still worthwhile, but if the majority of GAs end with having to handhold users, then not so much.

3 out of 22 winners didn'r read description. So it's 14%. Well it's not 50%, but it's not like 5% as well xD

Another attempt with more explicit instructions. Let's see if I'll need to also include translations to multiple languages ;-)

What MSKOTOR said above, you're risking "not received" mark from a bit more stupid users who won't even read description of the giveaway they won. You could now ask "wait, so they'll add me on Steam telling me the link doesn't work, right?" and surprise, there is a very high chance that this won't happen either, due to same reasons.

It's your choice how you make your giveaways, but assuming that people have a minimum of brain will lead to dramatic consequences. I'd not suggest this way personally.

why would you overcomplicate things? xD

just add the winner to steam and give him the code or send it via email... @.@

Why not just suggest SG to support indiegala links?
Actually 'gift links' is a bad thing (atleast humblebundle ones).
I had a bad experience of not recieving actual key to my email after activating hb gift (while getting their newsletter is always fine).
So I had to ask help from hb support and\or ga creator to recover the key...

It was suggested many times, but for some unknown reason isn't implemented.

I personally never had any issues with gift link (Humble or otherwise), so I like them. I always have doubts about keys being used but not marked as such, though it only happened to me once or twice. It's unlikely to happen with gift links, because it's easy to validate them before sending or before creating a GA.
