For the love of god don't take this to expect to get more free stuff for writing out an extensive thank-you. Do it because you really ARE thankful!

Had the same with a thanks you for a Lucid post; got a private 1 person giveaway XD
Sadly there's some weird error it gives when I try to play, which I haven't had time to solve yet.

Its easy to thank people, even easier still to give a semi-unique thank you. The fact that you got a gift for it is nice, but posting it here is supposed to...do what? Make people write out wordy thank you's? The real way to say thank you, I'd say, is to pay it forward and give back to the community.

Indeed, you are very correct. My budget prohibits me from doing so currently, but I've made a promise to myself to do so at my soonest opportunity. =)

Well I'm not calling you out or anything, I'm just saying. There are people in this community with hearts of gold; someone once gave me a bundle key that had several games I wanted, the top on my list being Jamestown. And I enjoyed the hell out of that game. I gave back, just once, but I plan for so many more when I get my work hours going again.

I feel ya. I was just so blown away, I had to post about it. I'm happy that someone's generosity was able to touch you as well.

Truly a prestigious gathering of fellows that everyone should aspire to be part of, and only granted entry through the quality of their actions. =)

Eeew... I much prefer without.
Possibly, your monitor is screwing up and blending pixels that it's not supposed to.
(In his screenshot, for example, on my screen without ClearType, all of the "l"'s are exactly one pixel in width with no color bleed into adjacent pixels. Same goes for all similar characters.)

Yeah, that's why I suggested he use ClearType. Without it, text appears pixelated for the very reason you stated, which is just aesthetically unappealing to me. I mean, printed text, e-ink, etc. all have some color bleed so now anything without it just feels unnatural.
Of course, if he took the screenshot on a much higher resolution display it wouldn't really matter, but the fact that individual pixels are pronounced is gross. I mean, look at the "v" for example -- it's just a staircase of pixels while with ClearType it would actually look like a diagonal line.
Edit: Btw, based on your post it kinda seems like you think your personal ClearType setting affects the screenshot? Huh?

Ah, a different aesthetic preference then.
Re: your edit: no, I simply thought perhaps your monitor was blending pixels inappropriately -- some "monitors" that are designed for TV use, and are typically less expensive for similar physical size, will do that -- screenshot or otherwise, and that having ClearType set on your computer made the inappropriate blending more appealing.
I happen to prefer the stair-stepping "v" -- maybe jade does too, or maybe you've enlightened him... who knows! :)

I always try to write something more than a simple 'thank you'. Even if it's just a small comment about the game being given or something. It at least makes it less boring for both myself and those who read it (if anyone ever does read them).

i suspect most gifters read comments on their giveaways -- i know i do!

Sometimes, the giver can do "unique" things. (: Just saying (:
And I once said here that "saying 'Thank You' like a machine does not make the giver feel good. Say 'Thanks' only when it matters to you." (something like that) and I got almost lynched.
Congrats to you and to the one-that-shall-not-be-named. (:

I don't really understand the anger at people who give simple thanks for the chance to win a game. I mean, yeah, it can get annoying, but at least they mean well.
What I don't like are those people who silently enter giveaways, win, and still don't have the courtesy to thank anyone involved -- even the people they won the gift from.

I don't think there's real anger towards these people. People prefer to read the more meaningful comments and some people don't like the simple thanks getting in the way of that. Thankfully someone posted a script which aggregates them, though I'm to lazy to find the link now.
Then there are some people who just argue about it, asking things like "would you prefer to have everyone comment or no one". Answering "none" to this (as I did) doesn't mean that I have anything against the people who thank, just like if someone asked "would you prefer to eat 5kg of cake or none", answering "none" doesn't mean I don't like cake.

now i'm curious what your comment was. i usually try to put a bit about what the game means to me along with my thanks, since a simple "thanks" or even "thanks for <specific game here>" could be done by a robot.
when i've given away games i've read all the comments people posted on my giveaways and appreciated the ones that actually said something. that's why i either say something or don't post a comment at all. it's nice to know others appreciate real comments as well!

I'll admit, it wasn't anything super amazing. But it was at least four sentences long, basically thanking for the giveaway, pointing out that I was happy it was multiple copies and wishing luck to everyone else. I got the impression he was just happy someone took the time to bother.

I just had a similar experience this morning. I put a comment in a giveaway talking about how I'd never heard of the game, so I checked it out, demo'd it, and then entered when I really enjoyed it, of course with the obligatory thank you. I'd forgot all about it, obviously didn't win it. I ended up getting a random friend request last night and accepted it, mainly because I thought it looked familiar, but couldn't quite figure out where from.
This morning I got a message from the person, we talked a little, next thing I know I'm being given a copy of the game that was up for giveaway. This community has some amazing people, without a doubt. I'm so glad I found it. <3

No, this is not a puzzle giveaway. I simply want to post about something amazing that just happened to me.
I try to make unique and interesting thank-you comments to the giveaways I enter, only because I truly am appreciative of the chance to win a free game for doing next to nothing. As someone who's had to scrape by most of their life, getting things for free can make a big difference.
I left a rather wordy thank-you in a giveaway I saw right before I went to bed, and didn't think much more of it. However, when I got up this morning I noticed I had an invite on Steam.
Then this happened.
He was so appreciative of my comment, he bought another copy of the game and gifted it to me. Needless to say, I was blown away.
So! The moral is; while thank-yous are all well and good, and everyone should be thankful for the opportunity to win a free game, giveaway creators really do appreciate the time it takes to write out an actual thank you message.
