edit: I have just ordered a MSI GeForce® GTX 1060 GAMING X 6G for 362€ and should receive it on July 28-29.

As much as the 1070 was tempting, the other parts of my PC are getting quite old and I thought it might be better to get a cheaper one to extend its lifetime by a few years, and maybe get a whole new PC when the next generation of GPU will be out.

So it was either the 1060 or the RX 480.
A lof of people suggested a particular model for the RX 480 (Sapphire Radeon RX 480 Nitro+), but this wasn't available already so I would have had to wait an undetermined amount of the time and I wasn't really willing to. This card also made the price argument of the 480 a bit bogus since it was sold for 320€ where I could find it.
The other main argument in favour of the RX 480 was that it seemed more future proof, since at the moment it performs better in DX12/Vulkan games and had 2 extra GB of memory. However by the time this become really relevant, I might be looking to get a new PC soon.

This left me with the 1060. Models around 300€ were out of stock, so I had to pay a bit extra, but coming from a HD 6870, I should be more than happy once I get my hands on it.

This is pretty much a follow-up of my previous thread about my graphic issues. Odds are I'll be ordering a new GPU on Monday. But I'm completely clueless about this and I don't know what to get.

The 1070 is really tempting, but there's also quite a price difference (1070 starting at 500€, 1060 at 300€ and 480 at 260€). I'm not planning to do anything fancy, just playing on one 1080p monitor for now, I'm not particularly looking to get a 1440p soon but I might, especially if I end up getting the 1070.

So, should I go for the 1070 or is it more than I need ? Will the other cards cover my needs for several years ?
Also wondering how to choose a specific brand/model of card

Giveaways for bothering everyone with my newb questions today : ended

edit: I forgot, but here's my config:

PSU: Be Quiet Pure Power L7 - 530W
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 1Go
RAM: G.Skill Kit Extreme3 2 x 4 Go PC15000 Sniper CAS 9
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K
MB: Asus P8Z68-V LX

I'll probably buy a SSD in the upcoming months, but anything else I should change ? Will the new card be fine on this config ?

The only thing I have to add is "get the best you can afford when you can afford it".
Everything else I told you on Steam already.

1060 or 1070 depending on your budget.
1060 seems to be the most reasonable choice.

1060 is a waste if you don't plan on upgrading for another 4 years. In a year the 1060/480 will start to choke at even 1080p. I don't understand the obsession of buying whats working "now". Buy the best you can afford when it comes to graphics cards if you're not going to be upgrading again anytime soon.

I'd go RX480 (and I hate AMD but... it's likely to be cheapest unless you can find a good deal on a 980 Ti) if you're going to upgrade to a 1440 monitor in a year or 2. Already the 1070 starts to dip below 60FPS with everything maxed, sometimes not even everything.

And in 2 years we'll probably be seeing even better cards with HMB2 memory that MIGHT deliver properly at 1440p and above but most importantly, Nvidia should have their DX12 business in order by then because that's the Achilles heel of their current lineup. Sucks at asynch. But I suspect by then they'll dominate AMD there, too. Because, well, why bother now when so few games are going to be using DX12 for another year?

Depends on games you would like to play and effects you wanna set.

For right now, I'd get the 480 because Nvidia screwed up on the 900 series and I don't fully trust them yet to fully support DX12.

With your current setup, a 1060 is more than enough. Regarding the Rx480, I'm not sure your PSU can handle it. I could be wrong on that.

The GeForce GTX 1060 seems to be a bit stronger than the Radeon Rx 480, but most review sites are sponsored by Nvidia, so that statement should be taken with a proverbial grain of salt.
Myself, I'd get a Radeon Rx 480, specifically one of those with 8GB of VRAM, for future-proofing, but I'm kinda biased...

Given that their prices are similar, the ultimate choice is up to you, you just need to know that something better would be wasted with just a single 1080p monitor. Better yet, would be buying a used GeForce GTX 980 or Radeon R9 380X, if you can find them at the same price.

I'll just close by leaving this:

I would also buy more system RAM, for the same future-proofing reason I mentioned above.

Based on your cpu and the price difference between 1060 and 1070 and playing on 1080p as the default resolution, i'd say " GTX 1060 " is a more reasonable option to choose.

I'm also confused between Rx 480 and Nvidia 1060, They seems all out of stock :V
Also my cpu is from Amd (FX 6300) so thinking about Rx 480 :3

Not necessarily. NVIDIA drivers are better optimised, and so in general work better with lower performance chips. However, I haven't been able to easily find benchmarks right now to show that, and I think I've seen it go both ways.

I'd say: if you're in a hurry, buy what's available. The 1060 and RX 480 can be a little hard to find, especially at stock price.

i d pick the 1060..
reason? with not much effort you can just ad anotherone of that card, get just a little bit over the price of a 1070 and you have a sli power that goes beyond that of a 1070

have fun and thanks for the gibs :)

If now a 6870 was enough for you, and you do not plan to go higher than 1080p, a 1060 or a 480 will be pretty fine.

The 1060 and 480 are so close, practically you will not feel a difference while gaming. Personally I would prefer the 480 because - at the moment - it looks more future proof.

if you get a 1060 or 480 i would get an aftermarket version, they'll give you better performance for just about the same price

It pretty much depends on your needs and general budget...
I've always had "bad" graphic cards because of my financial situation, and I've always been satisfied with performance (I really don't need 60fps locked on Ultra settings for every game). For example I have GTX 750Ti now, and every game works fine... Witcher III has about 40-45 fps with medium to high settings and still looks gorgeous.

So, long story short... Both of these cards (I'm not taking ATi into account, because I'm not a fan of AMD, but if you are, then "all three of these cards" xD) are great, and will work great for the years to come... But, 1060 will probably fail to give you 60fps on highest settings in a year or two for new games... If you can live with that, I have a nice way to spend extra 200e you get for not buying 1070, then go for it. If you spend a lot of time playing video games, absolutely love ultra high settings and 60fps in every game, then 1070 is card for you.

Of course, if you plan on buying 1440p (or higher), then 1070 is definitely a smarter choice...

Anyway, sorry for the long post... and thanks for the giveaways :)

1060 is the card with the best price/performance ratio. Planning to get that one myself, too.

1060 is pretty good, especially the MSI build which is a little more expensive. on 1080p you can run almost anything at 60fps for a decent price. Ill probably get one myself :)

Does someone remember? When GTX 770 came out, was there a 4 GB version announced or only the 2 GB? Actually I have a GTX 770 with 2 GB and I am planning to upgrade to a new Pascal card. My favorite in general is 1060, but it was more sexy if it had more VRAM e.g. 8 GB ... so in this case I would wait if there one with more VRAM comes out. Otherwise I'd choose a 1070. I can afford, but it is too expensive in my eyes ...

same questions here. But I decided to wait another month or so to see some comparison benchmarks first and hopefully prices will drop down a litlle by then.. Good luck on choosing!

I'd personally take a 1070 to be future proof but you have to shell out 530€ for it.
Then from what I see prices (
300€) and even in-game performance are quite similar between a RX 480 8GB and the GTX 1060 6GB, the difficult part will be stock availability...

This thread was helpful for me. I am also in need of a new graphic card. My 4850 stopped working about a month ago and I am using a borrowed card. I am on a low budget so I will be getting the RX 480. It's not available in my country yet and whenever it will be, I bet it's going to be twice the price due taxes. So I'll try to ask someone who lives in the US to arrange for one.
