Seriously, I think we need to make the rules and how the site works more apparent. ie a conformation email with them in it, you have to read them like a TOS before you can register, and/or they pop up before your first giveaway.

Accidental?

You are seriously stupid if you think they aren't doing it on purpose. Let me spell it out for you nice and clear

  1. Make giveaway for expensive game

  2. 1 mod can't do jack shit because the other mods left

  3. Claim it was a mistake or that your "friend" made the giveaway

  4. Beg winner to click 'received' so the "mistake" won't ruin their steamgifts credibility

  5. $60-$150 contrib for free

  6. Join contrib only giveaways and get better odds

Make sense yet? It's not a fucking accident, it's people cheating

Why on earth would anyone click on "Received", when this is exactly the kind of people that need to be exposed and preferably banned from the site?

Not received + report seems to be the only logical choice.

And what would stop them from just clicking "I've read and accept ...". Most newcomers that make giveaways thinking they will receive the gift can't even read English.

High, very high. You could have font size as big as screen with blinking effect and they still would not see it.

it has nothing to do with seeing it, and everything to do with the fact that this is the age of 0 accountability. Oh, I have to sign a contract? TL;DR lol! I racked up a bunch of debt getting a doctorate in the history of underwater basketweaving and now have a job at a grocery store and 80,000 in debt? THE SYSTEM FAILED ME! I decided playing with stray rabid pitbulls was a great idea even though I took a job with no insurance? I'M THE VICTIM HERE!

Pisses me off.

What i find funny is that everyone use the same excuse.

talk about a terrible person to be a friend with (I mean that person who is no longer a friend with the so called prankster). What I'm trying to say is, if they really did what they claim, the user is a jerk who takes jokes to seriously by breaking their friendship.

Well, I think one solution for this problem could be that people wouldn't be allowed to make a giveaway unless they have the corresponding game in their inventory. That way people could only make giveaways for games they already have and thus CAN give away. But I guess that would require that Steamgifts should constantly be syncing with everyone's Steam accounts to know what giftable games people have in their inventories, and I guess it would perhaps be too difficult and time-consuming to program Steam and Steamgifts to constantly interact with each other like that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And people can also give keys, not sure if you remember that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh yeah, you're right. I totally forgot about Steam keys. So I don't know, maybe even keys should be visible in people's inventories so keys and actaul games would be equally giftable?? This is a really tough question, no wonder there's not yet a working solution...

Permalink

It needs to be changed by valve = will happen about the time we die

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I've given away games I don't own, so I don't think this is a perfect solution.

There's no cure for stupid- there will always be people who don't understand how very simple systems work

Best solution would be to translate steamgifts in other languages like russian.

Most often they just don't speak english very well hence the error.A good translation in the most popular languages except English would be very helpful.

(Cg if you read this -> I can help you with the French translation)

Wait, you didn't notice that FAQ have "FAQ Translated" section with links? People would just need to start reading FAQ to find them

He talks more about i18n of the whole site, not about the links hidden in the FAQ. If I understood correctly.
Must say, a great idea by Supernico00.

Permalink

Those "hidden" links are quite easy to find especially when you read FAQ (so you know they are there). Besides what's the point in translating whole page if only the rules might be difficult to understand?

I don't think that people stupid enough to believe that if they make a giveaway, Valve will give the game for free, will read the FAQ anyway...

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, wait. I thought we were talking about people stupid enough to join site without knowing the language (because free games) not about complete idiots (yeah, some people don't read rules "just because they're rules" but those at least know about "if you make a giveaway you'll have to give the game to winner" thingy)

How'bout you just have to be registered for like 2-4 weeks before u can open up a give away?
Would definetly stop all those newfags from submitting games they want after beeing registered for 2 days(Btw. it's always(or nearly) a '2 days' member, who opens up fakes.)..

I like this idea. Of course, there's no guarantee that they'll be active enough to understand how things work, but I think this would probably cut down on people making giveaways for games that they don't own.

I accidentally didn't read the FAQ when I signed up, despite multiple messages telling me to do so. Hurrdurr, free Skyrim and MW3 for everyone!

They are not accidents. They deliberately put them up to get points to enter a giveaway. Simple solution is to just ban them, or maybe to be not so mean a temp ban for a week on first transgression?

you don't get the points, if the other user doesn't click he received the gift, if i remember right.

i don't even know how people can accidentally make a giveaway, you have to choose a time on how long it should go, and then you have to reaccept to make the giveaway

The winner has to confirm it before they get credited for a contribution, yes :)

And then the cheater says it's a mistake and begs the winner to say received so they don't get banned for a "mistake"

what about this:

  • a giveaway can only be created at least XX minutes in the future
  • during this period the creator can deactivate/remove the giveaway
  • at the end of the giveaway the user is not only shown a recap of the giveaway but a related part of the FAQ/rules
