I see a lot of people saying that the card economy will be completely ruined. Obviously this is true if valve doesn't remove the duped gems and ban those involved in exploiting.

I see the price drop in some boosters/cards being only temporary. Currently the cheapest way to get 400 gems (the price of the cheapest booster) is to buy 4x backgrounds/emotes. Currently the cheapest ones are 5 cents and rising steadily and will only get more expensive as the stock dwindles. That's a minimum of 20 cents for the cheapest booster, which is already the standard price for those anyway. Sure some games with more expensive cards will drop for a bit but everything does during the Winter/Sale sales and events. This also won't affect every game, if you look at the list of craftable boosters you will notice there are TONS of games missing from the list. Combine that with the limit to how many boosters you can craft per day and in the end it won't really make a big difference.

I for one am happy about this auction event, I finally have something to do with the hundreds of backgrounds/emoticons I've hoarded over the last year or so. I do believe there will be more to come anyway.

Happy holidays.

Edit: Booster crafter has been removed for now.

Cards are now cheaper and that's all. The ones who wants to craft badges will have it, steam will get more from transactions. I can see the harm only to people who were holding expensive cards.

No, until the market was shut down, the cheapest way to get 400 gems was to buy 1k gems for 3 cents.

Which means one of three possibilities:

  1. Valve seriously miscalculated how many gems would be available from people recycling.
  2. There's another force, e.g. a bug, putting too many gems into the economy.
  3. Valve wants the price of cards to drop drastically, as nearly-free gems = nearly-free card boosters.

I'm guessing it's #2, but #3 has one thing going for it - Valve gets 33% of every card sold for 3c, but a whole lot less of every card sold for 10c or 25c.

There was a duplication bug. Lots of people will be getting banned. They will probably do a roll-back to un-ruin the economy since some people got millions of gems this way.

People were duping, it was never Valves intention to have that many gems flood the market. What we are seeing now is the effects of that. You can currently get some cards/boosters fairly cheap but that will only be temporary. The limit of being able to only craft 1 booster per game per day really saved the day here.

What do you mean by "duping"?

There's a glitch which allowed users to duplicate unlimited amount of gems. Valve are banning them now.

Saw a few people got community banned already, let's see if steam does something else to mitigate the impact this "bug" had in the market.

Good, shame their whole account wasn't deleted though. I bookmarked a couple of the people that were duping and some of them had really expensive csgo/dota items in their inventory, serves them right.
