Some stuff I really liked:

Bartender
A bartender tells stories about his customers. Slow as shit and nothing ever happens action-wise, but it's just oozing with atmosphere and style and quality.

Berserk
VERY violent medieval fantasy stuff. Don't watch this if you don't like blood and nudity (and more blood), but other than that it's great.

Cowboy Bebop
A real classic. Bounty hunters in space have awesome (and sometimes sad) adventures. Awesome characters, awesome stories, awesome music. Why haven't you watched this yet, it'll cure you of that Naruto stuff right away (also Naruto blatantly stole entire fight scenes from Cowboy Bebop).

Excel Saga
Probably the best comedy animu ever, about a girl who joins an organisation that is trying to take over the world. Lots of parodies of different animu genres (and also some Western animation) and 'random' humor (without becoming randumb).

FCLC
Probably the second best comedy animu ever. Has a decent story as well. Manages to keep the weirdness level perfectly balanced between "What the fuck is this shit?" and "FUCK YEAH!".

Ghost in the Shell (Stand Alone Complex and Second Gig)
Sci-fi police stories with good action and heavy transhumanist themes. AIs, cyborgs, and brain-internet ahoy! Also one of the most awesome female protagonists ever. The major is better than you at everything ever.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Over the top awesome bullshit action with giant robots (and I do mean GIANT - I won't spoil anything, but let's just say that things get really ridiculous at the end). A lot of it is pretty stupid but it's so well-executed you don't even care. Also has more serious over- and undertones that keep it from spinning out of control. This shit WILL make you go OH HELL YES. Multiple times.

Last Exile
A boy and a girl and their aeroplane get mixed up in a huge war/conspiracy. Very cool steampunk-ish adventure story. Cool setting, cool characters, cool animation, cool story. It's just all very cool and you should watch it. Dio is awesome. ;_;

Mononoke
Super stylish ghost stories based on Japanese myth. Interesting art style and storytelling with near-perfect pacing. It feels really slow at first (during the first episode I was like GET ON WITH IT, I WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON every five minutes), but once you get used to it it's just brilliant.

Planetes
Great sci-fi story. The most realistic space-based animu I've ever seen, both in the story and the setting. Also, awesome characters and a good story. Fee wins at smoking.

s.CRY.ed
Nothing special here, just an action story with super powered teens. Somehow I love this shit though. It doesn't try to be overly deep complex and just does what it sets out to do very well. Has some decent subplots and cool characters, but it's all about the action here.

Trigun
Another classic. Wild-west sci-fi action stuff. Starts out very lighthearted and slapstick but gets more and more serious as the story goes on. Nicholas D. Wolfwood is cooler than your favorite anime character.

Also all of these are finished series. I don't like watching ongoing stuff because it means I can't watch episodes at my own pace.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

good one from this season- "Another"

Code Geass <-- best anime ever, please watch both seasons... (I always feels like crying after watch this... sobsob)
Gundam 00 <-- one of the best Gundam anime, also, hv two seasons...
Another <-- This one is ongoing, but it's quite interesting to watch...

I used to be taken A LOT in animes, but as I grew up I switched for more mature ones...

• GTO is definitely a must see. In fact I think I'll download them right now =]
• There's also Young GTO (Shonan Junai Gumi or something like that), there's 4 episodes of 1 hour each but I recommend getting yourself the manga - the animation is really old. This one tells about the youth of Onizuka, and it's filled with sex, violence, biking (the cool kind) and not giving any fucks.
• Lastly, there's the movie Akira. The animation is really the strong point (you'd believe it was made in 2005 when in fact it dates back to the end of the '70s) but the story is really breathtaking.

I'ma now watching all of it myself (season 13 :D) and there are a few episodes i luv so...
Serie: Pokemon
Why: Its funny and sometimes a bit of romance, and i also love the dramatic scenes like This, This, ... and i can think of alot more scene's, but especially the Weezing/Arbok one is sad, and i'am 14 already and i still almost cry with that
There are still new episodes coming out, and a new season has just started.

Paprika very cool anime
Ghost in the shell and ergo proxy very cool anime to watch

Dragon Ball Z was the only anime I ever liked, I usually find anime too weird and gross to watch.

I'm going to go with a few that haven't been mentioned. Probably because they're too old. Not that my taste or knowledge of anime is that great or extensive though. :P
Ranma 1/2 - I would almost call this the precursor to a lot of the relationship/harem/daily life animes people are mentioning.
Blueseed - Just something about this one always struck me, I really liked it. Even if it's tropey sometimes.
Vampire Princess Miyu - Really variable quality between episodes, but it used to be my wife's favorite anime.
Robotech - this is a classic people.

Like: Perfect Blue, Akira.

Dislike: probably everything else.

I tried watching anime, but it seemed so stupid sometimes. I know there are some serious films, maybe even series, but majority of them are just retarded. High school girls with big boobs and shy guys saving the world from some evil beings. Or love stories between a girl with big boobs and a shy boy. Sometimes I think anime is just for horny kids and perverts. I don't have time to wade through all that crap to find a decent anime.
