The Alps Challenge!

Where: Middle-Southern Europe (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia, and Switzerland.)
What: Big rocks.

Interesting facts:

  1. The Alps were formed about 44 million years ago.
  2. The Alps exist because Europe and Africa are colliding. Hundreds of millions of years of pressure between the two continents have highly pushed terrain over the sea level. In many locations altitude is well over 4,000m.
  3. A mummified man known as Ötzi the Iceman was found in the Alps at the Austrian/Italian border in 1991, said to be 5,000 years old.
  4. There are 13,000 species of vegetation and 30,000 species of wildlife, many of which are native to the Alps.
  5. It is suggested that between 40,000 to 80,000 men died in World War I due to avalanches on the Alps.
  6. The highest peak in the Alps is Mont Blanc at 4810 metres. Mont Blanc (French) or Monte Blanco (Italian) means White Mountain.
  7. The Alpine region area contains about a hundred peaks higher than 4,000 meters (13,123 ft), known as the “four-thousanders“.
  8. The Alps maintain a permanent snow blanket over 2750 meters above sea level, and have many glaciers.
  9. The Alps represent 11% of Europe’s surface and they provide up to 90% of water to lowland Europe, particularly to arid areas and during the summer months.
  10. Every self-respecting list needs to have 10 elements and this one about Alps is not an exception.

GOOD LUCK on the challenge! Create for us some breath-taking masterpieces of the Alps for some awesome GA wins!

I would have thought you drew like a Budgie. SadisticChicken hosted and participated, so clearly doing it like a chicken is not problem!

I can't draw either, I rely on other methods. :P

I feel slightly offended. :P
To be perfectly honest you are right, I can only draw from pictures, not imagination.

Didn't mean to offend anyone... was just trying to encourage Budgie to give it a try...

Reminds me a bit of the look of NES artwork (the use of colours that is, not the filters). :)

This challenge I drew my inspiration from 50s era DC comics. At first I was going for the obvious transformation volcano, but as I started working on it this just felt more unique and yet natural. Doing the shades on the mountain was what took the longest. As the final touch in the end I had to tone down the saturation and looked in a few comics for reference for the colours.

Do you use a tablet?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sadly not, I broke mine years ago. It's why i had to use a bunch of tweaking with filters to make it look better (but sadly more blurry in the process)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

How do you create the painted/watercolor effect?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

watercolor paper texture +
painted some colors more or less > experimented with different filters

Really that effect is just mostly due to the filters done over and over until i get something i like, which sometimes ends up nice and sometimes really awful.

Why didn't you remove numbers?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because they're part of the challenge

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But obviously you can remove them to make picture look even greater.
Note for future: I should try to make a picture where I remove every number, dot and line and after that make Nordh to accept it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well I can still do it I have plenty of time for once. But I dunno.
Somebody already tried and it was rejected as a valid entry in a past week.

If you do, try also change colours of lines to dark-blue.
