Developer already confirm it on Twitter.

Starting today, we will be hosting a unique campaign here at MangaGamer, The Hinamizawa Virus Bundle, for those struggling with the ongoing pandemic. The first chapter of #Higurashi will be free-to-own on our website & Steam until an effective vaccine for COVID-19 is discovered.

According to Nmia, giveaway will begin at tomorrow (around CST time).

It's free forever now

As someone whose favorite anime ever is Higurashi, I feel like it's worth reading the VN, although I haven't finished it yet. The atmosphere works even better in this form imo and you get a lot more scenes and details compared to the rather compressed story in the anime.

The anime cut a massive amount out. Though the Umineko anime was worse with that.

That is, the distribution will be more than one year? Why not make it free forever.

Not really into visual novel that much (unless it has more gameplay like Ace Attorney or Danganronpa) but hyped anyway because i watched the anime already!

Also noteworthy: the remainder of the 'Question arcs' (Chapters 2-4) will also be getting a 75% discount once Chapter 1 goes free, lasting through July 14. If you enjoy Chapter 1, the total cost for the rest of the Question arcs will only be $5-6 USD; barring sales, the Answer arcs will cost you $6-8 each, with the final arc launching at the same time this deal goes live.

If you prefer DRM-free downloads, the same deal is already live on MangaGamer's storefront - you can grab Onikakushi here.

And if you enjoy the first chapter but don't have the disposable funds for anything past it, keep your eyes peeled for a giveaway in the next day or two.

Oh that's what I've been waiting for :D Will finally buy this serie then.
Also I saw that you put "The House in Fata Morgana" in your featured games, it's in my wishlist for a few months but I am currently playing Umineko (question arc, yes I am only at the beginning) and I read a few reviews saying the story is very close between the two games. So I am wondering is it worth it to buy it?

I've gotta fess up and admit I've never actually finished Umineko - I made it though the first couple 'episodes' before getting distracted, and it's been languishing in my backlog ever since.

That said, while there are some obvious similarities on the surface, at the end of the day they're very different stories. Despite a couple chapters dragging out longer than they needed to, I'd solidly rank Fata Morgana as one of my top VNs without question. Definitely worth a buy, although if you've already got a good backlog, wait until the summer sale or something similar.

Thank you for the answer :) I'll be waiting for the summer or winter sale for it then. It was several times in my basket but I had to make choices.
