I heard they're releasing a new 3DS that can only play certain games.
But, the new Pokemon is awesome IMO. The new Fairy type is kind of hard to get used to, since their strength's weaknesses don't really follow a logical pattern (like fire vs. grass.). But overall it's great.

XL if you don't need to carry it around in your pocket. It's way more ergonomic and has better battery life, in addition to the bigger screens. But there's a new one coming out in Japan in like a month and everywhere else in early 2015, with a second analog stick built in and a better processor (meaning some games will only run on that 3DS), and it's messing up my plan to buy myself an XL with the new Super Smash Bros. I'd say wait for the new one if you can, but only time will tell if it's a worthwhile investment over the current one.

"Would you like to buy a new 3DS or a new New 3DS?"

About the Pokémon... Black/White was garbage and X/Y is pretty decent again. I last played Diamond as well so it's just my opinion after browsing through pokédex, I know very little about the actual gameplay. Anyway in the "same" generation with Diamond/Pearl was also remake of GEN2 and remake of GEN3 will be released later this year.

There's the "New 3DS" and "New 3DS LL"(that's XL version in US/EU iirc) coming out in Japan, which is the one referenced that will play all current 3DS games, but some new games as well that can't be played on the original 3DS/XL.
However, from what I read, there are so far no plans to release the N3DS internationally yet, and the only response that had been given so far as I read a few days ago was a Nintendo representative responding that, if it happens, it will not happen in 2014.
Thus, to ultimately answer your question: If you can wait at least 6 months, you should wait for the New 3DS to come out, or at least have final word it won't come out. If you live in Japan, totally get a N3DS LL for the larger screen, longer battery life, second stick, and all the other improvements. If you neither live in JP to buy one now, nor can bring yourself to wait 6 months or so, then I guess buy a 3DS XL for the slight improvements that brought to the standard 3DS, and then just be prepared for that to feel like a waste later if you end up really wanting to play games that turn out to only be able to run on the New 3DS instead.

Well, it's effectively a new generation console. It's like the PS4... Err, wait... PS3 since PS4 isn't backwards compatible at all... -.-;
The PS3 (original release version) could play all the PS1 & PS2 games, but none of the PS3 games could be used on either older system.
The New 3DS is effectively the 3DS 2. The whole thing is redesigned with a new CPU and memory, the addition of the 2nd stick, shoulder buttons, and so on. It actually makes perfect sense that a new game, designed to use all that new stuff, can't then be used on the older system which lacks it all.
So really, I think the only thing to be particularly annoyed by atm is the fact that it's been a disturbingly short, and very turbulent, lifespan. The original 3Ds only launched in JP in Feb 2011, so it won't even have hit a full 4 years.

3DS is best. XL is alright if you give a damn about screen size, but I prefer the normal one because I want it to fit in my pocket. And yeah some of the new pokemon look dumb but it's still a great game. Besides, there are a handful of dumb looking pokemon in every generation. The X/Y games are very much worth playing with all the new features and graphics. Plus Hoenn remakes are coming soon! :)

I'm really hyped for Hoenn remakes because Emerald was one of my favorite games. I looked it up and there's been some rumors about Emerald getting a remake so Id rather wait for that one. Also I agree with you on the screen size thing, size doesnt matter to me as long as the game is fun.

Looks cool, but Im not really into games like Phantasy Star anymore (played the ones on the PSP and had a blast). Im mostly into games like Disgaea or like a said in the op started to get back into Pokemans (for handheld). Might give the Phantasy Star series another look later on though.

I havent owned a Nintendo handheld since the ds lite and that was a few years back. Im not really sure which ds to look at because nintendo released like 10(exaggerated?) of them while I wasnt paying attention.
Also while Im at it, for those who plays Pokèmon, which one should I get? I heard that some of the new ones had stupid looking pokemans so I just wanted to know if the new games are still good or I should just skip them. Last Pokèmon game was pearl if that helps.
