Europa Universalis series. Specially EU2. I loved maps, changing borders. It was perfect when I was young. Still love Paradox games.

Why your contributor value demands so evil? $65.98 here ;_;

So close...

It's hard to say, I love all strategy games. Among my favorites though are Xcom EU, the command and conquer series, company of heroes, the original medieval total war, the original empire earth, and anything turn based such as final fantasy. and if you'd consider time management a form of strategy, my absolute favorite strategy game, which also is turn based; Persona 3 FES

Warcraft III. It was a game when Blizzard was THE real Blizzard, a good sequence to Warcraft Universe lore, nice single player, matches were short but intense, heroes gives a great array of strategies.

My favorite strategy game will always be Total Annihilation. It was the first game of its kind and still has yet to be matched of its kind. Not even Supreme Commander 1 could match it. Planetary Annihilation is look at as the possible spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, but in truth Supreme Commander was and yet failed to be a fully fledged one.

Total Annihilation had everything I wanted that hardly anyone did, it had sci-fi,robots, large scale battles, all the major forms of military structure we use today but in a futuristic form. Even though it did not have much story, the story of how the Core and the Arm came to be itself was more than enough.

Ok, here comes a good list.

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/500/details/Civil.War.II
soon out, the first was just badass

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/368/details/Close.Combat:.The.Longest.Day
the best of the close combat serie imho, tactical thought, but few of you guys seem to know the difference so whatever :-)

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/377/details/Command.Ops:.Battles.from.the.Bulge.
latest of the command ops serie

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/483/details/Command:.Modern.Air.Naval.Operations
soon out, the successor to
http://www.matrixgames.com/products/325/details/Larry.Bond%27s.Harpoon.-.Commander%27s.Edition
the difference between the two is mindblowing, if you can go for command modern air naval operations

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/317/details/Norm.Koger%27s.The.Operational.Art.of.War.III
a classic, not my favourite, but has the advantage of being very modulable

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/396/details/Revolution.Under.Siege.
the only game where you can play the white russians as far as i know

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/476/details/Rise.Of.Prussia.Gold
another ageod game, be warned that they all differ not just in subject but also in style, obviously you don't play the russian revolution the same way you play the american civil war.

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/351/details/War.in.the.Pacific.-.Admiral%27s.Edition
MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE, there can be no praise enough for that game, one of the best games ever made. Only recommended to those who know what the word strategy really means and already have some experience thought.

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/372/details/Gary.Grigsby%27s.War.in.the.East:.The.German-Soviet.War.1941-1945
a game that makes excellent use of manoeuver and encirclement.

http://www.hpssims.com/
has excellent games as well, but very inequal, i definitely recommend
http://www.hpssims.com/Pages/Products/pzc/pzc_smolensk/PZC_smolensk.html
for the experience of playing a game while constantly retreating as the russian, really a unique experience,

http://www.hpssims.com/Pages/Products/RifMusk/Penninsula/penninsula.html
Is also an excellent choice

They have plenty of games so make your choice.

http://www.navalwarfare.net/steam&iron.html
is excellent for those who want naval warfare if harpoon and the upcoming command air naval operations are not enough

http://aurora2.pentarch.org/index.php/board,10.0.html
is the best space 4x around if you prefer deepness to graphics ( like a real strategist should )
and it's a FREE GAME

http://www.histwar.com/
is good if you like napoleon ( ageod and hps have some titles as well )

and as a bonus, not a strategy games, but any strategist will love it,
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
it's a FREE GAME btw

now yes, i played all the total war since the first one the day it came out, and all the paradox games since europa universalis 2 came out, but seriously, if you talk strategy and not graphics, then this here is way better.

Have fun.

For me it'd be either Homeworld, Sacrifice, or the original X-Com - UFO Defense. All three are a bit older, but amazing.

Europa Universalis 3 or Crusader Kings 2. Basically because I love empire building much more than fighting tactical battles.

Panzer General

Spent a looot of time playing that in the nineties.

An interesting tidbit: the game needed to load a couple hundred files at start, which - at the time - meant you had to wait for a solid minute for the hard drive to do its job. Norton Cache was magical and cut the loading time to several seconds (SmartDrive wasn't so successful). You see, kids, back in 1994, if you didn't have Norton Utilities and had autoexec.bat run Norton Commander, you'd be laughed at.

A less interesting, but very sad tidbit: there is now a Panzer General Online, and they're slowly sending codes for the closed beta. I got in the beta, but it crashes my entire computer through the browser, even though it should be a pure HTML/JS game.

It became a lot easier after I learned what entrenchment and suppression were.

Have you played Panzer Corps? It's been on GreenLight for some time... Not too fond of buying it outside of Steam :/

Edit: for those reading this, be a darling and vote the game up on GreenLight - it's very solid and it'll only take a second of your time to vote it up. Maybe one day Steam will get its head out of its ass and GL this game and many other good ones.

Haven't played that one actually, but i will give it a try. I buy all my strategy games outside of steam because the best ones are just not there and i cannot always be connected to internet ( nor want a corporation to track my hours and location, as much as i am grateful for the service )

I'm always low on drive space, so downloading an installer from somewhere and then basically having to keep it forever is causing me problems.

Any other WWII strategy games that you could recommend, but not those that have a 300-hour learning curve? (I'm old and very much employed now.)
